I am so with you Sarah re 5k PB. I've been training really hard to improve my 5k time , hitting all my paces in intervals but in the last two 5k races I get to a point where I have the overwhelming need to walk for a bit. I mentally cannot manage the feeling of being so out of breath - despite having managed faster paces and feeling worse in training. I just need to forget about racing for a bit and get back to enjoying the run.
I think every runner knows this feeling haha. Did you try asking someone to pace you? It might help to show you how much pain and suffering your body is actually capable of. It's never fun during, but it feels great afterwards 😅
I just loved this podcast with Phily Bowden! TRC was first RUclips channel I subscribed too and Phily's channel the second. Thank you for this! Great advise, info and good laughs as well. 😅 I tell everybody about your channels. 😁 Absolutely love you guys! ❤️
Although I adore Andy I really enjoyed seeing phily being interviewed as I'm a big fan of her channel. Be nice to have an occasional guest on ,keeps things fresh
@@runningchannel Damian Hall or Jasmin Paris and ask about the Berkeley marathon or one of the many fellow You tubers who've run races at altitude ( Ben parkes ,Loyd purvis ,flora Beverly etc ), I run out of breathe at sea level, how on earth do they manage at altitude 😳?
So true, I’ve never regretted a run! Sometimes I just give myself an out to only run a few miles if I’m really struggling, then a lot of times I end up doing more once I start. I’d rather only do a few miles than none at all though, so whatever works!
I was listening on Spotify this morning on my walk, and actually, Phily and Sarah sound very alike! Also, in Sweden they've been using rules like that regarding who gets to represent us in international championships, leading to a lot of controversy. It makes me sad to hear more countries are doing it, as I was kinda hoping they'd change their minds here. :(
Thanks for having Philly on the podcast. She is delightful to listen to. I watch her channel as well and find it highly entertaining. I just recently began to listen to the podcast, although I am a RUclips subscriber. Please keep up the good work.
Philly, I often incorporate parkrun into my long runs! I’ll run there, do parkrun, then run home! It does involve breaking the run up a bit unless you can perfectly time getting there for the start, and I usually hang around chatting after parkrun before I start running again too, but it gets the miles in!
Great to see Phily on your channel. I've been following her journey on youtube since her channel's inception. I think she has huge potential and will only get quicker. Thought it was great she referenced people that believe strava times take preference over chip times. I know a few UK youtubers seem to quote strava times, as though GPS is infallible, over chip times with one even stopping their watch during a marathon when they hit 42.2 km. Bit disingenuous when you have platforms to influence people. No such complaints with the running channel. Keep up the good work.
Phily is great! She's an elite but still seems so relatable other than the fact that she goes so much faster. Great conversation and answers to the questions.
I have borrowed a mantra from your team "I can do tough/hard things". I also get to a certain point in my runs, today half way from home in the furthest point in the neighborhood and ask "Why am I doing this?" "It's fun right?" but 100% bask in the sense of accomplishment when I get home, and know it will make the next 5k easier for all the practice. Lastly - my neighborhood has a lot of hills, even ones you find while jogging that you don't feel in the car. I figure it adds to my training, but I haven't yet figured out flat spots to try some of the sprints TRC recommends (I just need to see of something flat-ish is 200 or 400 meters).
Thank you for bringing Phily to the show. It is always interesting to know the elite athletes views on running! And what competition and what timing cut off’s 😮 Rick hope you are well now and enjoying your runs🤞 Sarah, keep up the good work and keep us motivated through your videos👍
Lovely as always to see Phily. Great episode - I really love these podcast episodes, you give us so much 👍👍 I love Brighton! It was my first marathon ❤️ You can only really see the finish when you have 3 miles to go and believe me, it helps! Love the grind ❤
The idea of parkrun is really so nice … except that we are still closed down in France and entirely due to parkrun HQ and nothing to do woth parkrun in France 😢
Suggestion for the next person to invite I would suggest Anna, I have been following her ultra training journey in the past few months and I think it is super inspiring.
Or a random little injury, or even a purchase of shoes that you just don't get on with. It's amazing how quickly running can go from 'this is my life now' to 'f*ck this sh*t, can't be arsed' The thought that has made me lose motivation for an extended period at least twice before, and I'm still yet to internalise a convincing argument to counter - "unless you're a professional runner, no one cares about or benefits from the times you run. You don't have the talent to be a professional runner, so why dedicate so much time and energy to it?" It turns out that when I only run when I feel like running, as much as I DO love running, I'm extremely lazy. The answer is no doubt to stop finding motivation through others' perceptions of myself, but that would require a total personality transplant
@@SuperFuzzyDunlop Ah yes. I derive motivation though from timing my runs and having a roster of PBs from 100m sprints up to 10k, and staying on top of my game to beat them once in a while. Also, I consider jogs (even tempo stuff) as an accelerated stroll, just a way to cruise around the neighborhood while getting a solid workout.
I have question for the Running Channel that I'd appreciate if it could be addressed in a future podcast: Have any of you tried red light therapy? Red light therapy has been well known for aiding in both recovery and injuries. I was wondering if you guys could make a video on this, I don't recall this ever being addressed in any previous videos. It is a definite game changer in speeding up both recovery and injuries. I think it could be very beneficial for any runner! Thank you!
Yeah, I only have big hills around me, I've got a flattish 5k from my door which I can squidge up to about 4.5 miles so sometimes I'll just do laps of that for long runs and sometimes will tackle the awful roads and get beat up by the descents xD
Hi! I'm 29years old and I'm new to the sport of running. I played basketball back in highschool and the drills are way too different. Now I'm transitioning to endurance running but I can barely run a half marathon without walking. Just a quick question, if I do a HIIT training today and do my recovery run in the afternoon, can I do speed workouts the next day (tomorrow)?
Hey guys! Great channel and podcast! Can you let me know please what Garmin Phily is using please? I sent in a question also last week :) hoping it gets aired. Thanks much love x
That’s mad. Just gone inside 44 for a 10k. Would love run a marathon under 3 hours. I’m a cyclist I only run on 3 week family holidays no bike !!! Running is fab. Leg pain aside
It's an interesting question whether British Athletics is reducing the medal haul by leaving so many qualifying athletes at home. Could it be that the consistency of the competition for the medals is so tough that the chances of relative outsiders picking them up is very low? Is it reasonable to be so focussed on medals to the exclusion of other good results and also the value of giving athletes experience? Is the decision driven by economics?
I suspect it is due to economic reasons. I believe GB athletics have been trying to tighten the purse strings for years. Doesn't seem fair on the athletes though especially when you've missed the QT by such a small margin. I also think it would be a real shame that young athletes will miss on experiencing the Olympics when they don't have much expectation on them. Katarina Johnson-Thompson wasn't going to medal at London 2012 (finished a respectable 13th) but I'm sure the exposure helped her achieve gold at 2019 World Champs.
It's the same in NZ with different sports. For archery we had 2 athletes win spaces for Tokyo (there are certain competitions and you have to win them, it's the first time in forever NZ has done that). We had 3 archers shooting over the minimum qualifying scores but because they had no reasonable chance to finish in the top 8 the NZOC let go of the spots. It is mostly economic. It's the same for other sports. Usually if you are ranked top 16 internationally you'll be able to go. The catch is, you can't be top 16 in archery without being on the circuit - and archery is a self funded sport here.
