That shirt is the original sketch of "Goldy" the Gopher, mascot for the University of Minnesota! (The sketch was based off of a squirrel) I went to school there, what a great vintage shirt!!!
Long time Lindy Hoper who has been also working a Bal and some Slow bal this past year .Just getting to a serious attempt to learn Collegiate shag now after years of dabbling with it here and there at workshop classes and taking a short series years back. I am at the point with my Shag where I need to take my own advice I give when teaching Lindy and learn those basics as thoroughly as possible and get good clean basics in my muscle memory and get to the point I where I can also do them in all sorts of directions on the floor. This video with a variety of solid basics demonstrated and the progressive tempo increases is an awesome resource at this point and I am among those setting some goals based on this vid. Thank you for taking the time to put this together. Maybe one day I will be able to lead the style well enough to enjoy a Collegiate Shag dance with you at an event one day :) I will be subscribing for sure to see what other helpful videos you have out there. Great job and thank you for making this!
I understand. I think that it takes some time to learn to trust the dance community that you enter. I'd suggest trying to find a dance location and just going to watch. See if you feel comfortable and then slowly try to dance here and there. You'll build friendships and eventually trust and then it won't be weird.
Props for a great instructional video! And double props for not letting a technical malfunction get you down. Pajama Party Collegiate Shag NEEDS TO BE A THING! 😜👍🏼
Love your hair and your dancing is awesome along with your instruction. I’d never heard of collegiate shag so I came here to see it. I appreciate your instruction here for this shag, but I really like Carolina shag a bit more. 😎

Hi, Been asking and looking for how to practice fast shag and in a random search stumbled on your video, bliss. Been very happy practising to it and now looking forward to scrawling through all the great vintage info and watching the weekly clips. I'm sure you won't mind me sharing amongst the shag community locally here in Leeds and nationaly in the UK. Ta very much
Please share! And I'm so glad you found this video and that it can help. Let me know if you have any questions and thank you so much for taking the time to comment.
Started sharing and already got the first thumbs up from Shag up North our local group in Leeds. Thank you for offering to answer my questions. First :D, eally loving dancing shag and keen to improve. Though even with practice, social dancing and workshops, I get out of synch/rhythm with dance partners. Any suggestions of practice methods or tips to get out of this bad habit of mine? @@LiveCollegiateShag
@@andyhunt3746 that's great! As for getting out of rhythm with a dance partner, send me an email at live.collegiate.shag@gmail.com and I'll give you some suggestions :)
From 30 seconds to 20 minutes. 🤣 . . . This was great thank you so much. I love watching you guys dance, so smooth. My partner and I are just now getting into faster BPMs (200 at most,) this will be great for us. Thanks again!
I'm so glad you guys love shag and are practicing! That's amazing. I'm hoping this video will help people take the leap and start challenging themselves to go faster! Let me know if you have any questions once you start going through it and thank you for leaving this comment
@@LiveCollegiateShag Honestly, I have a question now. Lol. My girlfriend has crazy legs, kind of like Scarecrow in Wizard of Oz. We're having trouble getting her to keep her "claps tighter." We were thinking about putting those elastic aerobics bands around her ankles or tying her ankles together with a desired slack in between. We were wondering if there was a more conventional way of accomplishing the results we're looking for? We've tried working our way up from about 150 BPM to 200 and she can keep up physically just not rhythmically. Any advice?
@@jimmyjimmy7240 lol don't do the elastic band, it sounds too dangerous. Send me an email at live.collegiate.shag@gmail.com and I'll give you some helpful direction.

This year summer 2023 I watched many squirrels in a tree upside down biting branches off a flower tree where they ate the flower then dropped the branch and leaf and the fall of branch was pinwheeling and so pretty as they fell in a close simultaneously drop. .squirrels are adorable.,as well as as natures friendly pest to humans..
Many thanks for your video. As a person who is completely new to shag and has had ankle and foot injury issues last year, I would like to ask, do you focus on tightening your abs, or is it tightening the glutes, or something else? I would like to make sure my technique is correct to avoid injury.
Hi Debbie! Thanks for asking. I'd say my core is engaged while I'm dancing but I'm also very relaxed. I'd say I'd be more worried about your foot wear. Make sure you have good arch support in your shoes. Your muscles are going to be sore for awhile from Shag just because it's a completely different movement (people will say they've tried running to get in shape for shag but it never works, the only thing that gets your body in shape for shag, is practicing shag). Have you seen my shoe video? *as for glutes... if you have a large butt like I do, you might have to tuck it or tighten it to prevent it from doing a counter bounce, I had that problem when I first started though most people have that problem with their boobs... our bodies are all so different. Hope this helped. Feel free to ask more questions at live.collegiate.shag@gmail.com
Great video! Im a lindy hopper who thought it would be fun to learn some shag basics so this is perfect! One question! Since im primarily dancing as a leader, should I mirror your steps and start on my left foot like in lindy hop?
Excellent point which I totally forgot to mention! Yes, as a lead, please mirror my footwork. Your weight should start on the left, kick with your right. I hope you enjoy it!
Loving the videos, taking the point of how the leader should go is there any chance you could get your fella to do a similar video to save us mirroring please?
I just love your channel!❤️ Someone in a vintage group on Facebook, recommended your video about pincurls, and since then I have watched several of your videos😊 Just a quick question: where are those lovely shoes from? They look so stylish, yet comfortable😍 Love from Denmark❤️🇩🇰
Awww that makes me so happy! I'm so glad we connected and thank you for commenting. Those lovely shoes I found in a vintage shop and I love them. You can find similar looking shoes from Saint Savoy :) Ronnie has a pair of those that he loves and I want to get a pair in my size! P.S. would love to go to Denmark one day and if we do, I hope we get to meet you!
Thank you Hector. For your double kick don't make the second kick as big as the first. You're almost doing a small pump, or baby kick while your foot is already out there. So try to look in a mirror and see (side angle) if you're doing two full kicks for each double kick. Weird to type this but I hope that makes since.
One of the things our instructors told us about double kick is to just have your foot up and out, then bounce downward, with each bounce your foot naturally pumps downward.
Hahaha I can only imagine. Lol what were you searching for to find this if not Collegiate Shag? I'm surprised it came up under anything else. Yes, unfortunately different parts of the world have different meaning but vintage dances have been called the shag for a long time. This dance was created in America in the 1930's by College kids and became popular in the 1940's. What is the history behind the word Shag in Britain? :) I hope this helps make the word a little more innocent or at least it can be a conversation starter the next time you're with friends
For leads (often the man) they would do the opposite foot. So they would kick first with their right foot. Where as the follow (often the woman) will start on the same foot I did and the first kick is with the left. I wouldn't suggest learning both at first as it can be confusing. Unless you plan on switching roles. I find it is best to start with one and get good at it before adding other elements. Have fun!
Natalie Kohn these are actually vintage men shoes (Arika Nerguiz) that I really enjoy dancing in. Though I’d say Slide and Swing Shoes from Barcelona are a good equivalent. I dance in both often. Have you seen my dance shoe video yet?
