This is by far one of my favorite games. I think it's putting the coins in and hearing that drum buildup to the rocking soundtrack! The game is also just simply amazing! If I could have one real cabinet in my home this one would be it!
I feel exactly the same. I have so much nostalgia for this game. I’m still pinching myself that I have this in my game room. Thanks so much for watching!
This is one of the defining arcade games for me and especially the deluxe cab because it was a total experience. You got a really nice cab and I hope you can get it all fixed up to your liking.
Using a shaker is a great idea for the home arcade. Also, there's nothing wrong with using a new amp. I just love that there are repairs that we can make using new/cheap/reliable technology.
Which makes me wonder why it’s so hard to think long-term with these simply made home arcade versions. Shouldn’t it be just as simple to keep them running?
Nice! The Afterburner 2 I got from an estate sale was home use only (purchased new from Sega)... until I put it in my commercial arcade, LOL. To this day it's still the cleanest one I've ever seen.
Not too sure about a bass shaker as it would be tied to the audio which will trigger differently at best. I would try and insulate some of the shaker motor mechanics with felt or rubber to soften the affect. Another option is limiting the voltage going to it using a Variac or resistor able to handle the amount of power going into it.
I was absolutely obsessed by After Burner when I was a kid, great find! Still listen to the tunes from it today. Ralph, if you need any advice fixing this, Chris White who did the Cannonball Outrun enhanced version would be a good person to contact. He can also provide you with some replacement EPROMs to actually enhance your original version of the game and improve it. Check out his Reassembler blog for more info. I don't have the space for any full size cabinets so I'm always hoping someone like Replicade or Numbskull make a mini one of these. You just need an After Burner Climax cabinet to go with it now!
Awesome! Can't wait until the next video. I remember playing that one at the Disneyland Hotel's underwater arcade. The cockpit one was at Disneyland's arcade by Space Mountain.
BOOM! Instant Like! Ralph, as a hands-on project guy myself, I really appreciate seeing what's involved with restoring these machines. Each one is so different on the inside and with the unique interfaces, it must be like looking behind the curtain for the first time every time you get a new one. Great video!
Job well done acquiring After Burner, Ralph! I do know that video graphic glitches can be a challenge on SEGA PCBs. There is a youtube channel named @RetroClinic where Mark has a history of repairing SEGA boards. Maybe check with him for advice or possible repair work?
Thanks for the tip bud, I just reached out to him to see if he can help. Thanks again! I'm going to do some basic troubleshooting in the meantime and see if I can make any progress. Thanks again!
If you can't get that board 100% working there's a replacement board available. The guys at Joe's Classic Arcade got one for an Afterburner with a board that they couldn't fix.
Dude, right, it's freaking aggressive AF... LOL. I love it but needless to say the rest of the house disagrees with me... haha. I hope all is well man! If I don't talk to you before the holiday, have a great Christmas!
I admit I'm not as familiar with after burner as with many of SEGA's other arcade IPs (though I did play a ton of the modern sequel Climax when my local arcade had it) but the little bit I played of the original game was pretty sick! that's a pretty sweet pickup and hopefully those repairs and the shaker motor/bass shaker stuff work out.
I got mine for $400 back in 2019 - screen has always been slightly out of focus but it's playable. Unfortunately on location it maybe makes a max of $3/wk but I wasn't aware of the rumble, I'll have to look at that
After Burner! Well done man great find for a great price. Nice work on the fixes too... man... that force feedback/ shake on the joystick. Nuts! All the best.
Great score Ralph. I have the same machine. The sit down was one of my favorite games as a kid. Very rear to see at this point. I know they have one at Fun Spot and New Hampshire and I was able to play it just 2 years ago. Brought back a lot of childhood memories.
That's awesome! This past weekend I worked on an Afterburner DX, the old moving sit down version. Has a lot of issues, mainly monitor and some power supplies, sound amp is completely blown, but it and a moving G-Loc will be worked on. They were ocean pier games, so... My buddy was, or is the world record holder for Afterburner. He's one of the score keepers for the Kong off at Funspot.
Oh man…if I had to choose just one arcade to own, it would be this. Hands down. Almost got one for $350 years ago but was a pain to arrange for pickup. Dream cab for sure. I hope the home arcade manufacturers are paying attention to the comments here!
I bought a standup Afterburner cabinet with no pcb board, after years of searching i finally sourced 2x boards and am sending them in for repair. I hope to have this game up and running next to my Sega Hang on..👍😎🎉
It for some reason your board is not repairable (there’s a pesky proprietary graphics chips) that fails often. The only way to repair it is to harvest a known good one. If that ends up happening, your alternative solution could be the SmartyPi. Here’s the link if you need it. smartypi.co.uk
I gotta follow my passion man. I’m just not really into the 1up cabs anymore. I was really excited when they came out in 2018, but lately they’ve been disappointing. I might cover them here and there If they do a title that’s super crazy otherwise I likely won’t be covering them again for a while. I appreciate you still supporting the channel though, thank you so much 🙏🏼
Nice pickup... a classic and fun game! As for the LED bulbs staying lit, I'm not an electronics genius, but cutting and pasting the reason: "An LED bulb, compared to halogen lamps or incandescent bulbs, has a much higher resistance on count of the integrated power supply unit. What happens is that the serial connection of the glow lamp clamps the circuit even when you turn the switch off." Try a name brand LED bulb as many inexpensive ones don't have the right electronics in them (cheap Chinese crap). If replacing the bulb with a better "quality" bulb doesn't work, there is a resistor you can solder somewhere in line to drop the resistance of the wire before contacting the bulb. Again, I've had this problem and researched it in the past, but not an electronics guy to say "you need this xxx Ohm resistor for this cab and put it here".
Is the motor AC or DC? Is it run with PWM? You can probably do a Bass shaker but you'll need to do something to turn the output frequency to a low rumble, I'm thinking the default output would be too high of a frequency. That can probably be fixed with an Arduino and some code though.
What an amazing pick up mate! Well done! You must be over the moon! It's great to see that all the "faults" seemed to be easy fixes. Gotta be the deal of the year surely? :)
nice pickup. i can where the rumble motor would be too much for a house. now all you need is a super hang on & streets of rage cabs to go along side of after burner

Ralph…you need to have a site with tutorials on how to mod/repair old arcades. With what I’m paying now for Arcade1Ups, I’d definitely go this route if only I had some help. Make it a subscription service or write a book. You’d have my $$$ for sure 👍
