I could probably explain better with a diagram, but basically each box pleat covers the distance of one segment of fabric using thrice the amount. the reason it's not twice the amount is that there's not only the top and the bottom sections of the pleat, there's also the bit in-between the pleats. two of these are needed for each pleat (and two of them are equivalent to one pleat width), so therefore you need three times the amount of fabric to reach the same distance. sorry if this doesn't make much sense!
