- 80 years of Vintage Lipsticks
Hello lovelies, today I will be discussing vintage lipstick trends from the 1920s until the 1990s.
While makeup trends fluctuate from season to season and even month to month, there is an unmistakable trend that pervades each decade. Popular lipstick shades have frequently been influenced by cultural climates, historical events, and rebellions-periods in which women felt free and liberated or oppressed. We spoke with two celebrity makeup artists to learn more about the decade's dominant texture and colour. They deconstructed each decade, highlighting popular lipstick trends, the global events that precipitated them, and how to recreate the look.

Became American Beauty, too!
We also can't forget the iconic supermodels of the 90s! I graduated high school in 99 and brown lipliner with clear gloss was very popular as well as the black honey shade by Clinique.
I graduated in 1994 and that Clinique lippie was my absolute favorite around 1999.
The dark brown lipliner and clear gloss was still going strong in the early 2000’s I remember it well!
I remember this!! Just the lipliner was considered fashionable. It made it feel less embarrassing when lipstick wore of leaving just it’s line during that era- haha (I also graduated in ‘99!)
Off*
today’s generation just (re)discovered Black Honey! it’s been sold out everywhere for so long!
In the 90s brown was very popular, and I wore a shade called “Downtown Brown.” I actually used brown eyeliner to line my lips, with clear gloss on the center, too. Lol
Julie, I still so this today. Lipliner ought to be darker than the formular used within! It did look good, and it does look good.
Downtown brown was Mary Kay I believe.
Downtown brown was mary kay. I too loved and wore it until it was discontinued. I recently bought a tube though old was full of wonderful memories. 😊
For lipsticks like Besame that go on rough and are hard to take off, I've found that putting on Chapstick first helps. They go on much smoother and come off easier. The bonus is that your lips don't dry out.
I do this before applying lipstick too! Works great!
I used to love a Revlon Moondrops shade called "Apple Polish". They discontinued it. I heard that Doris Day wore it too.
Oh yes! I read that too
I’d love for Revlon to re release these beautiful discontinued vintage shades. They still have a place in today’s market. Elizabeth Arden also had beautiful shades now long gone. One of my all time favourites was a shade called Clementine .
@@missmm1302 I so agree with you !
I really love moon drops 24 karat orange, I wore it in the 80s and 90s
The 1960's Yardley girl!! Omg those mascara'd eyelashes were my lifetime holy grail quest. I swear I spent the next 3 decades perfecting them...and then my eyelashes thinned out. Lauren Hutton was my go-to Queen for make up looks in the 70's and 80's, she was just stunning (and the first Charlie girl). By the 90's I was all about Really Raisin lipstick and the pursuit of a matching lip pencil and perfect black leather pencil skirt.
You sound like a stunning and timelessly chic lady! And what the boys call a MILF nowadays lol. Women like you are who I look up to for beauty inspiration
It would be great if you could find a dupe for Elizabeth Arden's Montezuma Red! That particular lipstick was worn by women in the US military during WWII. It was created to match the red piping on the uniforms the women wore. Be careful wearing Ponds under lipstick as it can cause the lipstick to spread outward around the mouth as one's face warms it during the day. Great video once again, Laura!
Besame victory red is designed to be a dupe.
@@RR4711 Thank you so much! Will have to check that out. Thank you!
I've only ever really loved red lipsticks.. usually blue red, but most shades, and deep berries and plums. I'm stuck between the 20s-40s. I experiment at times, but I've anways just gravitated towards a deep bold lip.
Great video! I graduated in 1996, and I wore Toast of NY and also Bistro Burgundy by Cover Girl. Those lipsticks, some flannel, Doc Martens and a splash of CK One and I was ready to party. 😊
The powder puff on your vanity is the cutest! 🎀
I graduated in 1994 and my go to color was the Revlon colorstay Sienna. How I wish they didn’t discontinue that line. None compare to them.
I've found some discontinued makeup at Amazon. Maybe check there?
I remember on ebay that when I did looked up vintage lipsticks there is a bunch of them but I think most of them are pre used unless you find new old stock where they haven't been used or opened but they are still old
I had several Lipsticks that I own break or come out of the tube completely from being loose. I just repot them in tiny travel size jars and they last longer.
Browns we’re all the rage in the early 90’s. You would wear a shade like Toast of New York and line your eyes with a brown pencil etc. later in the decade the thinner eyebrows and changed color scheme came in with silver, or light pink eyeshadows- glitter etc.
I used to wear the frosted pink in the early 2000s and had the hideous eyebrows
I used to wear Toast of New York
I lived my youth in 90’s. Yeah lots of brown shades and mattes. 😊
I love the pink shades of the 1960s. Although I like pink shades in general. I really enjoyed seeing all the lipsticks of the decades.
I know your lips and arm took a beating to do this! I appreciate how much work you put into researching these lipsticks. Great job!
I have several brown lipsticks from the nineties that I brought doubles of, because I loved them so much. They are subtle and look best on tanned skin.
My favourite brands are Bourjois, Rimmel, Boots No 7 and Boots No 17. But I have lots of unusual colours like a translucent green and a white with silver glitter, as well as more wearable ones like pale lilac and a black cherry. Also the odd lipstick that was a free magazine sample or from a small brand.
My late mother preferred pale cherry red, fire engine red and pinky red. She thought my liking for lilacs, pinks, purples and browns was odd, because she first wore lipsticks in the forties when those colours were not used.
I started wearing makeup in the at the end of the 60s (yes I had a pair of go go boots! big fun!) and I recall the frosted shades fell way out of favor in the 70s. They only seem to be getting attention again now.
I've always worn frosted eyeshadow. Almost 50.
@@daphne4983 I'm 65. I have not worn it since I was a very young teenager.
@@lorijones9579 Oh I loved those frosts! Yardley was my fave! I'm 64 and my lips are too thin to wear nice colors anymore. But I like a tinted lip balm. Burt's Bees have many pretty ones to choose from
Girls didn’t wear anything but light frosts at my 70s high school. But I do recall the Mary Quant look later on in that decade.
I used to always steal my mums electric pink 80s lipstick. During the 90s Rimmel Heather shimmer and coffee shimmer and Clinique Black Honey were the ultimate shades here in the UK.
Frosted lipsticks were huge in the eighties. My sil only wore frosted light pinks like from the 60’s. I wore sooo many colours but I always loved a dark frosted pink.
I work in school and I’m required to wear a mask. When we can ditch them I can’t wait to break out my lipsticks again. I really miss wearing lipstick! I really enjoyed this Laura thank you!🙋🏻♀️💄 I would say the20s were my favorite.
Yes magenta and hot pink lipstick 😍❤️
I love lipstick! Thank you for this video Laura! 💗
There used to be a chemist ( drug store ), a few miles away from where I live that had a board with lipstick samples on, because their customers could buy lipsticks from a discontinued brand, from the late eighties, that they had loads of boxes of. There were frosted ones and some very dark ones including a bright orange. The owners have since retired and closed the shop.
I love the Revlon lipsticks. They have this classic look to them, I bought two today lol
The wet n wild blind date reminds me of the amazing gorgeous Norma Shearer colour. She’s wonderful. So many favorite movies but The Women is so funny and cunning.♥️🇨🇦
I grew up in the 80's so seeing those bright shades brought back memories. I like The 60's shades too!
Amazing video as always👌
a little FYI: Selena's favorite lipstick was 'Brick' by Chanel however it was discontinued in 1997
Enchantress Blush looks beautiful on you!
Hi Laura I noticed that at first the colors were darker and then later in time lighter. Shadows palette, rouge and lipsticks in the 20's or 30's and 40 's are darker than 50' s or followed years. Beautiful and interesting video 👏👏👏👏💕💕💕💕👍👍👍
That was a great video! I love the 1930's. I remember in the early nineties Revlon rebooted a lipstick shade from the 40's called Raven red. It was a beautiful deep red shade!
I just love your channel about Old Hollywood and Vintage Beauty products! Even though we have modern technology I still prefer certain older fragrances and Revlons’s Cherries In The Snow lipstick! What is your favorite vintage perfume? Catch up with you later darling have to go edit another video Pink Champagne Kisses 💋💋💋💋💋🥂🍾
That first 1920's one and love that pink look like the perfect everyday shades
This was great ! You put so much thought and work into your videos. I graduated high school in 1991 when the 80's bright colors were giving way to the brown based 90s. I wore the crap out of Revlon's toast of new york and rosewine. I remember MAC del rio was also popular and of course spice lipliner. If I had to choose the best makeup decades it would be the 50s, late 70s and 90s. The 80s were too frosty and the 60s too pale. I guess we all have our favorites. Thanks for all your hard work.😀
I love lipstick but haven’t worn any I’m the past 2 years because of face masks, I’m so bummed. I have a bunch, My favorite is Tangee Natural which can be ordered from the Vermont Country Store for around $15 a tube. My mom used to pay 25 cents in the 1950s. I remember that my aunt had a Yardley Slicker collection that she kept well into the 1980s.
1920's so classy for evening loved it the 60 frosted colors are amazing love them
Love your eyeshadow girl!
Oh my god black cherry looks SO good on you..!!
Naomi Campbell is my favorite goddess of the 1990s she's so freaking gorgeous I could never😭😭😭😭😭😘😘😘😍😍😍😍💗💗💗💖💖💖🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯💯
light pink shades suit you very well
That fushia color (taboo?) was my favorite on you; portrait pink/pink portrait was my 2nd favorite.
love this topic!
Wow!!! You look amazing, very glamorous in them all.
The shape of the Bésame lipsticks has always put me off buying any because it looks like such a difficult shape to work with. I get that it makes them distinctive but when it's at the expense of practicality, no thank you! Anyway, loved this video and all the cute lipstick shades!!!
Your supposed to use the corners to line the lips and then fill in with the flat side. I actually really like the shape, but eventually the tip wears down.
Besame is amazing you should try it they last all day and don't feather or smear.
It is an amazing brand. The lipstick stays on really well and applied easily.
The shape is the best part. You use the corners as a lip liner so you don’t need a lip pencil. It might take a couple of try’s to get the hang of it but it’s worth it.
This is great!! I appreciate how much time and effort had to go into your research!!
Super comprehensive! Thank you ❤
I think the 60's had the best makeup styles, the 80's had the worst, but that's just my opinion.
may i ask what decade(s) you grew up in?
i’ve noticed a pattern of 80s girls hating the trends of the 80s😂
Loved todays (um..yesterdays) presentation. I've always been fascinated with how makeup responds & reflects what's going on in the world. You did an awesome job of tying all that together.
Another great video, Laura. Love the 60s pinks and the 70s colors.
what a wonderful video! your content is amazing, thank u so much!!
thank you for this ,its wonderful !
I really love the nude type soft peach they wore in 60s and 70s. The frosty pinks and the white lipstick back then too. It was like a frosted white.
I always learn something new that interests me from your content. Ty! I also enjoy viewing your antique vanity set and accessories. I love all things dainty.
Thanks for all the work you put into your videos.
I loved this--lots of beautiful colors from every decade.
I love the Besame shades but i do agree that they are a little rough to apply. They go on really well when I moisturize my lips and I like using a lip brush to put them on and I get them off really well with cleansing oil
the best thing is how nice they suit you, you look great in all of those colours 💖💖💖💖💖
Great video I’m glad your doing better ✨
I enjoyed this very much, thank you 💄 ❤️
Fabulous, thank you!
Laura! Love your videos! I would love to see more of your beauty room it looks beautiful:)
Wonderful video! The style from the 40s 50s 60s 70s 80s and 90s are clear to me but the 20s and 30s sort of blur together
My mother, who resembled Joan Crawford, always wore Revlon's Fire and Ice. I loved Clinique Black Honey. Love the Sixties pink shades. Vermont Country Store is a good resource for old cosmetic and fragrance brands. Do they still carry Tangee lipstick that turns color based on your own lips?
Perfect!!
Cherries In The Snow is gorgeous- and very unique! If you are fair , with very cool, pink undertones - THIS will be THE red for you!
I absolutely loved your video. You certainly did your homework (says the Aussie School Teacher...lol). It was really interesting and Im going to buy the Maybelline Pink and Proper for something different. Im a '50s red girl.
I’ve never had any problem putting on my Besamè.
That was so fun! Thank you. I now have my little list and off to the drug store I go!
Yay thank you!!!!
AWESOME
if any of yinz girls from any of these decades (heck, i’ll even consider the 00s, i was a little kid then and didn’t wear makeup. hah!) please tell me your personal “holy grail” beauty products!!! i’m so curious!
Revlon and Maybelline make amazing lipsticks ❤ i like MAC lipstick but they do tend to be a bit dry. I prefer satin like you do
Pink and Proper by Maybelline. Elizabeth Arden Baby pink, enchantress blush by cover girl.
Liked 40s and 50s. Love wearing shades like this.
Besame feels dry and rough on my lips, too. ❤
Nice😀
Cool
Luminous Pink by Revlon looks more 80s than 50s, because it's powder pinkish shimmer to it.
My eyebrows haven't quite recovered from the 1990's. Oy!
Yes! I'm somewhat early!
Mauve's ,pinks are suitable because my lips are that color.
De donde sacas tantas cosas bellas? Saludos desde México 🇲🇽
I started wearing makeup in the 90's. I started out with pinks, and then the brown matte lipsticks took over (which looking back now, just yuck.) One day my mom said to me that I was stuck in a brown lipstick rut & I needed to expand my colors. 😂 She was so right.
The 20's!
I love the 1920s vamp. I have a grey, black and white eye shadow pallete with the dark red. Women swooned over Bella Legosi. Vamp is short for vampire. I imagine the red ochre rust color for the mummy movies. I dislike the 60s frost. I remember that.
When will you be restocking sold out palettes?
❤❤❤
How did you get delivery from the Vermont Country Store? I’d love to order from them but I thought they didn’t deliver to Canada!
I used to have a mail box in the USA but I shut it down when covid hit because the ups store closed 😂
@@Laurajaneatelier Ohhh, gotcha! 😆
The 70's wore a lot of coral shades too, idk why you didn't mention them 😢 And also in the 90's they wore brown dark reds (see Whitney Houston & Gwen Stefani or Gweneth Patrow)
LUV the Tabu bright blue pink lipstick- you didn't mention the name of the shade. Was it Acapulco? Or Bar Harbor? I looked at the Vermont Country Store and couldn't really tell. Thanks! 🩷💕
I came here looking for an answer too.
@@HauntedMansionGhostsYes, the shade is Acapulco. ❤
Girl your lips took one for the team for this 😭
What is your favorite lipstick brand/color and why? I adore my kitten mischief by Lisa Eldridge because it goes with everything. It's a lovely nude peachy tone❤️
Red velvet from lime crime
It's okay, but I don't like pink, I just got fire and ice, it's really pretty
Excuse me, but the color or colors perhaps on your cheeks is so sweet ! Giving tips?
Are you an artist by the way? Nice illustration!
Lipstick has got to do what it's supposed to do: match your skin-tone and give your face a boost. Here, nobody must follow any trends. Beware of dark berry or brown shades if you are older, as these deep dark shades are very aging!
Besame is lying about those colours being used in those eras?
What brand were they from??
