  • Why is everyone not talking about these features? Listen to the plugin updates in Studio One 5: • Studio One 5 Features ...
Keep watching this video to find out what plugins and features you are missing if you already got Studio One 5 before exploring your options.
Also, yes I've discovered the upgrade fee from 4 is only 150.
Still, considering all of the extra things you get with Sphere, I'm standing by these thoughts on Studio One 5.
However, if you don't want all of the extra goodies then the 150 is a fair deal...
But honestly, I've been blown away! See some of the new plugins in action in this video: • Studio One 5 Features ...

Except if you already have S14 and Notion and lots of instruments, Sphere may not make sense yet. If you stop paying for it, you default back to v.4. For new users it's awesome. For others it'll make sense to buy v.5. And then go to Sphere if desired, knowing that if you drop it, you'll still have v.5.

Except Sphere is 695 PLN a year, while the upgrade to Studio One 5 Pro is 600 PLN. I already own Notion and Batch Converter since they were on a huge sale and cost me 307 PLN combined. The educational upgrade pricing for Studio One 4 Artist to Pro was 305 PLN and now the Studio One 5 educational upgrade was 339 PLN for me. So upgrading from Studio One Artist to Pro, plus Notion and Batch Converter was cheaper than a year of Sphere, and is a lifelong license. I don't have to pay if I don't deem the new features worth the admission price to me. Granted, I didn't get the loops and sounds (which are not that great and I'm better served with external libraries which I already own), cloud storage (which I don't need that much as I have 1TB of OneDrive storage from my university at the moment, and have 6TB of HDD storage in my current workstation, plus Splice is free and unlimited as far as I know), or addons like CTC-1 and Fat Channel models which weren't given away previously (550, Baxandall, Brit Comp, 160, C100A, FC-670, Solar 69, Tube EQ). But that's it. I have storage, I have T-RackS and Waves plugins for my 550, 160 and Brit Comp needs, and I couldn't care less about meh-quality loops and orchestral samples.
It doesn't make sense if you're already producing semi-professionally and have what you need. It's not a great deal for everyone. Especially if you're paid $40-50 (180PLN) a mix, so 2 mixes done gets you a full upgrade to a new major version of SO. Sphere eats into the budget way more than a perpetual license if you're doing audio somewhat seriously.
Granted, I'm spoiled because I'm still studying. But getting a year of subscription to the DAW + stuff I won't really be using thrown extra, or getting a lifetime license of the thing I actually wanted, at the same price, is not even a question.

@@GetSongsDone Yes, Presonus don't sell EDU licenses directly - you have to contact your distributor or look if they have listings for the EDU versions online. I bought on Thomann and sent them photos of both sides of my ID card, and that was enough for them. You can also show them a written statement/letter from the school. @@GetSongsDone I just bought the upgrade to v5 today, my ID expiry date was 30-03-2020, but here in Poland my university was locked down since 13-03, and is yet to be reopened in October. There was official legislation passed that makes all IDs that were valid up to 30 days before lockdown are valid until 60 days after schools resume operation - without the need to physically go to the office and get a new validation sticker. They honored this at Thomann with absolutely no issues, in fact I didn't even send them new photos. Just asked in the support chat prior to purchase, and apparently a different guy who was processing my order just let it through. No idea if he contacted they guy I was speaking with, or just passed it in good faith; anyway, it was all resolved in one business day for my first purchase and several hours today.

Even if recording/mixing audio is a hobby, this deal makes more sense for your bottom line with regards to cost. • @tstille

Yeah, can be kinda misleading until you put pen to paper. The price is definitely right for a sub (RE: they remained conservative). You're paying more to maintain the sub than you are to upgrade your license incrementally though (not to mention you lose it all when the sub stops). The topic of "value" is entirely subjective, but no argument you get more when paying more. Really comes down to what you value in the Sphere realm. For me, it's just a bunch of extra content that holds little relevance. I'm sure myself and many others are precise in what content we curate for our libraries (IE. to stay focused -- so easy to get too inundated with options).
Personal perspective on paper over ~3 years (to give folks a real world example):
-Upgraded from Studio One 1/2 to 3 in 2017: $149.00
-Upgraded from Studio One 1/2/3 to 4 in 2018: $149.95
-Upgraded from Studio One 1/2/3/4 to 5 EOY 2020 (basically 2 full years later): $162.97
    Total Shakedown: $461.92
Equivalency in Sphere Realm: $540.00 (if you're getting hit with tax on that sub it's more)
    Direct Savings (3 years): $78.08
It's a close call and the extra content certainly offers amazing value for those that aren't stressed running into a wall with maintaining that sub. That said, there is a propensity for the delta to shrink or grow exponentially depending on the update cycle they're able to kick out. If major updates start adhering to a ~2+ year cycle instead of yearly it becomes a much bigger consideration. Folks that hit hard times and can't maintain subs really suffer in periods of downtime. Those with a license continue to reap the benefits of having proper rights to the core package and keeping their brain well oiled. ;)
The good news is EVERYONE benefits from Presonus taking this step. Anything that further solidifies and grows their base market share is good for all of us. Options options! Means quality updates and no shortage of revenue to keep kicking them out! *Liked* the video, Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays. GL with the channel and cheers to all the fellow SO users.

@@GetSongsDone You bet man. You got far too many dislikes on this. People abuse that just because they disagree. If you don't like something, just move on unless it's offensive, then error your grievances with the 'dislike' button IMO. I think you made your points obvious. You're entitled to your own subjectivity in the process just like folks are entitled to disagree, but that doesn't mean they need to down vote. A lot of time and work goes into making videos and you can't possibly appeal to everyone. Totally enjoyed your video. I never looked at the plugins enough. The presentation and all marketing didn't really point to that. Maybe it will change my descision. The bug fixes and speed/dropout improvements make the whole thiuing really interesting, but again, they weren't advertised. I actively searched for a list of the smaller workflow features and bugfixes for days and found nothing. So that in my opinion is a lapse mostly on Presonus' marketing side. I had already decided to skip this version, but this information might make me reconsider. I was seriously considering leaving Studio One behind because stability and performance had gotten so bad, I couldn't really produce anymore. The constant issues just kept kicking me out of creative mode (flow state). Especially in the ones greate 4.5.. So hearing that exactly those points got better... hmm. Definitely considering upgtrading to 5 then.
That being said, the point with the license, while legally correct, kinda misses the point. As a user, once I paid for my license for a specific version, I can use it indefinitely. If that's the extent that I need, I am actually saving a lot of money compared to the regular 16 dollars a month. Especially if I can't utilize notion and the the other plugins. And even more so, if I choose to stay at a version and skip one major release.
If there was a version of sphere that didn't make me buy the whole bundle, but only Studio One (possibly with an upgrade for the libraries) and if those were comparable to dividing the Studio One price, maybe. The song backup option really is interestimng though. But yeah, all in all your video made me reconsider both points. Definitely gonna think about upgrading to 5. Not sure about Sphere yet.

    • @GetSongsDone
      @GetSongsDone  4 года назад

Yeah, my flow was messed up too. From what I understand it may not have entirely been Presonus' fault as it could be compatibility issues with outdated plugins. Yet, they fixed these issues for Studio One 5. You can always cancel Sphere if it doesn't work for you. Maybe it's an extra $30 a year if you don't use all the plugins, but I think it's a cool option regardless. Also, I was pleasantly surprised by the sound of their channel strip and fat channel plugins as well. Totally worth it IMO

I think presonus sphere is great value because upgrade of any new update is free for presonus sphere subscribers. Having studio one 5 license is great too but u still need to pay for upgrade after 2 years or so . To me they are almost thesame and if care is not taken sphere subscriptions is better in the long run. The truth is 14dolar a month is no money as compared to what u stand to achieve. Many will spend more that 14box in a bear parlor or even pay more for cinma or tv subscription and u get nothing. for me i value learning over money....and sphere is a platform for learning however good u are in music, u still need to keep learning to stay relevant...so buy license or pay subscription the goal is to make good music and also help presonus make studio one better...

Hey "Get Songs Done", Great Video.
I found it by accident, probably because of the topic.
I think your opinion about Sphere was interesting,
I think for many people that Sphere may be more cost effective.
Especially for those who are less invested.
I think that is why Presonus gives both options.
"This is very much a rant, but I am not trying to complain about
you, Presonus or any of the users. If any part sounds that way
It wasn’t supposed to, sorry “
I plan to purchase 5, when I am ready and I will explain why.
This is very wordy, because I have a strong opinion on why
I feel this way, but I am not trying to say that it is the only way.
I struggle between being an early adopter and frugal.
I am very excited about it. I feel that they have added some
things that were needed. Score View and a live mode.
The GUI has a nice overhaul and I know this means under the hood
probably had a lot of work.
Before I go any further, I want to mention that I really like Studio One I have been using it
since 2013 and have never been upset they didn't add features "that I wanted" but
made them for "someone else". Every feature they add makes the DAW better.
The current NEW features that will be most useful to me are
    -Clip Gain Envelopes
    -Key switches
    -Improved chord detection from audio
I know I WILL upgrade to 5, I don't see "new" features that I "need" today.
This may just be me trying to rationalize being cheap and waiting.
I was a little disappointed that there weren't many FUN little things
but I know that so much of the program's CORE changed so they
had to focus on making those work.
I feel that there will be a 5.? within 6 months that will have
a big list of FUN little features that we all like to get.
I have seen this before. With Versions 3 and 4 the effort was on
    a list of big overhauls.
When 3.5 and 4.5 came out these were loaded with workflow and creative
features that seemed to excite people more than the main releases.
    MY FEELINGS ABOUT SPHERE
I have several thoughts on this.
I like the addition of the collaboration and cloud storage, I am hoping
they will also add an option for people who purchased the license
to get the online tools for a lower monthly cost.
As for Sphere being better for cost, I have mixed feelings.
I have been using S1 since version 2.5.
I bought my interface with Artist and upgraded to pro, when on sale.
I managed to utilize all of the Presonus sales.
I have 2,3,4 Pro. CTC-1, some of the fat channels, PSO, Goldbaby collection, 20th century synth and Analog Model Machine.
I did the math and it averaged to $70 per year, I didn't include the hardware cost.
I have looked at the Sphere content and see the items that I don't have.
Notion - I could add it for $50, if I wanted it.
Batch Converter - Not sure if I will use it.
More fat channels - already have some.
XT Studio Grand - This and PSO appear to be the only Presence instruments that are not CORE to PRO
All of the Notion instruments - Unless I use Notion I won't need them.
All off the Spark sets appear to be loop libraries - I have some loop libraries and don't tend to use them.
If they added more content it may change the balance of the opinion that I have.
The “get all the content” is awesome, but I have seen a lot of people misrepresent this and try to use it for their basis. I believe the content is great, but some people hear “get all” and think it means this includes so much that you won’t want anything else, or that it is everything in the shop. Many people will want items like Vocalign, Harmony plugins, Tape Emulation, 3rd party Analog modelers, Transient shapers, 3rd party instruments, Upgrades to Melodyne, Drum alignment plug-ins.
My struggle now is to wait for the sale or jump and pay the full price.
Most version releases were happening in March and didn't go on sale until Black Friday.
With the release being much later the next sale may be later.
Also, with the addition of sphere I fear that there may be less sales.
I am going to try to wait for a sale, but will get Prime 5 when it is available, so I can feel
the changes to the interface. This may push me over the edge.
I have a friend that had Artist 4.0 with an Audio box, for him Sphere is a great idea, the balance between the investment he has made and the added benefits defiantly lean toward sphere.
