“We will continue to advance our live service capabilities to deliver future growth” Oh thank God, despite everything that was lost, their live service aspirations aren’t at an end. We can all breathe a sigh of relief. Like it’s sad and all, but that’s what we were TRULY scared of, was that you’d give up on live service and we’d be denied the wonderful future of designing games around the “we want another live service game chasing the latest trend, so put a team on that” model. Like god forbid we be left with games whose development be started from things like creativity or passion rather than a business model.
Live service is a necessary thing for stability with how high these game budgets are like u think concord was expensive I would be surprised if naughty dogs next single player game is 500 million it’s not a sustainable business model just making good single player games anymore especially if it’s gonna take like 6 years of no revenue in between pretty much every AAA studio at PlayStation has to sell like 10 million copies to break even these days like sm2 had to sell 7.7 to break even and it’s just gonna keep getting worse so they need a solution and I guess they believe it’s live service
@@nicholasvaccaro4826 I beg to differ. We have been getting plenty of excellent single player games both from large studios and indies as of recent. Black Myth Wukong, Astrobot, Frostpunk 2, all the Nintendo games, etc, plus how many indie titles. Maybe they should stop burning money pouring polygons into sweat beads and actually focus on the part of games people genuinely care about.
@@blakksheep736 if Astrobot sells aswell as their other large AAA games maybe they will but their fanbase is telling them no. Wukong is also a bad example as it’s very graphically expensive but was cheaper to produce due to their location being in china only way to lower the budget for them is outsourcing more work which they said they were looking into at the start of the year u have to remember most of Sony studios r located in Washington and California which are literally the most expensive places in the world to make games
@@nicholasvaccaro4826 Ahhh yeah, I’ll admit it, you got a damned good point. I mean if I had to name a single biggest mistake they made with Concord, it was that it wasn’t just FTP (which only woulda been plausible as live service). I mean I think the smart call is the “Shorter games with worse graphics”, lowering their overhead by focusing on good writing or tight gameplay loops and letting the bells and whistles slide… take the Devolver Digital route and bankroll small teams with passion rather than commission huge projects a marketing team have a profitable conceptual foundation… but you’re right, I’m being unrealistic in my expectations. There remains a market for big, flashy, high polish titles even if I’m not part of it, and the way forward for that is indeed live service cause you’re correct that the model is becoming unsustainable on a “pay upfront” basis. Still. While my sarcasm is deflated a bit by this fair point, I assume you get my meaning… for “Don’t worry, our live service pipeline is undaunted” to be one of the first things out of their lips communicates a sort of misplaced priorities. Like… GAMES. Players wanna know that you’re going to redouble your efforts and apply wisdom from mistakes to making better GAMES. “We’ll figure this distribution model out better next time” may reassure stockholders, but for the consumers it emphasizes the impression your priorities aren’t on improving your product.
I will say, Concord's artists (past the point of design) who actually modelled and textured and stuff are brilliant. Like the quality of the work is great, the designers are abysmal. Or, who ever decided what the designers would create are abysmal. The decision makers, basically.

4:00 I think the answer's simple: Concord started around 2018, when Overwatch was new and very popular. Sony likely saw the success of that game, saw that Concord was similar in gameplay, and snatched it up thinking that it would be a slam dunk. They just failed to account for how long it would take for the game to be made, as well as the shift in interests during that time, and did nothing to change it up.
But Sony didn't acquire Firewalk Studios until April 2023, WELL after hero shooters became an oversaturated genre. Overwatch 2 had already axed the one thing people wanted most out of it (the PvE), so it's not like the genre's golden child was the in the healthiest state back when Sony bought Firewalk. It's a baffling business decision. It's like buying a Nokia 3310 in 2024 to unironically use it: it just makes zero sense.
@@zen_7748don’t you dare insult the 3310 like that. People who want a reliable and cheap phone to only call people with exist. People who want burner phones exist. People who want to play Concord don’t.

Make a game for everyone and you make a game for no one. I don't want to defend this game but from what I saw, besides movement being very slow for this type of game, it looked fine, didn't have any major glitches and overall run good performance wise. I even had some fun watching Charlie play it. It tells me that it's not a bad dev team that tried to sell people an asset flip but something else...
this shit's like Morbius, it did so bad they took it down, then tried to bring it back, but unlike morbius it just stayed dead at this point. One of Sony's biggest fumbles
I finally understand why we've been getting all those dogshit movie and game flops. It's behind the scenes money laundering. Can't be any other reason for all this. It's impossible that a mentally stable, healthy and functioning human being would be capable of creating something like that.
The greatest value Concord has is as a talking point on where you could go wrong. Like, a whole ecosystem of youtube videos picking apart and analyzing everything wrong with Concord from gameplay feel to character design rose up over night. I, legitimately, learned a lot on just the character design point.
True, I also learned a lot of techniques from those videos. And the comparison of "Oceangate of Videogames" is true - I also learned alot about submarine design from the failure
They spent so much money on it, abandoning the project entirely is pretty dumb. I'm sure they were trying to make it work behind the scenes for a while.
I mean, that means they realized that they couldn't even make enough money off of microtransactions to cover the server costs if they make it free to play. That's actually insane.
This game has gotta to be the biggest financial and critical failure in gaming history. What's funny is that Sony and most other AAA studios won't take anything away from this, and just continue to do the wrong things.
To be fair to whoever had the idea, they had it over 8 years ago, when OW was not a F2P game and it was full price, with heavy lootbox monetization, and it was *literally* printing money. The problem is they took that long to develop
Nah, these games are pure crap. They've all been built on trying to suck money from you. No passion, no art, no FUN. I can't believe how mindless people are who keep playing that stuff over and over and over...the same boring matches again and again. I hate these live service games with every fiber of my being and they are only going to make gaming worse.
I'm actually surprised they weren't stupid enough to try and release it free to play only to fail miserable yet again, props to the one higher up at Sony that still has a funcional brain
Not even joking my manager at work loves Concord and was genuinely disappointed that it got shut down. He was so excited for it to come out and then sad that everyone hated it so much.

Even if it’s mobile imagine getting hired on a team to work on something for two years, only to not only get it cancelled but for it to never be announced and no one know the work you did with it. @@genderaxio7433 that's not even true lmao there are plenty of games out there on mobile that have artistic value. unless you quantify something having "artistic value" as "lets me play it for free with no ads or compensation given to devs", in which case any game on any platform is totally devoid of "artistic value."

I think the sad thing is we've become so used to Sony's incompetence this year that we believed there was a chance they would be dumb enough to revive it. I'm not surprised, but I also wouldn't have been shocked if they tried to revive this corpse of a game in a desperate bid to try and make something off it. Still, I feel awful for the devs that wasted a near decade on a game that died within half a month.
Didn't ask my content is better"
The devs got what they wanted 😂 the people they hate did not buy the game
It wasn't even alive enough to die. It was a corpse from launch. They didn't even have enough sales to cover the cost of electricity for a year.
Thinking the same thing, you give yourself to this job ONLY for it to be ran through the mud with the direction some execs thought after a coke line. And the only people that lost with this was the people actually working on it

“We will continue to advance our live service capabilities to deliver future growth”
Oh thank God, despite everything that was lost, their live service aspirations aren’t at an end.
Goes to show they're still missing the forest for the trees.

1:46 BEST BAND MENTIONED
2 years old isn't new.
