Hi, I was having the dame issue but try just opening the blend file in 2.91 and the Obj should have the material and it works correctly. The thing is: the Obj has an Sub D..If you turn off the Sub D it will not work. Create a cube , give it a Bevel mod with min 2 seg. and then give it a Sub D with min 2. The material should work as intended. Hope this was helpful. Ps. Check my YT.
@@thesparkofart8616 please help, i tried to bake the material into image texture but i got nothing but black colors on the outside of the UV Map. How do I fix it?
For those of you who're getting the pink texture issue when changing your material output node from Eevee to Cycles, there's a quick fix for it. 1. Navigate Render Properties panel/tab 2. Navigate to Scene section. 3. Then change the render engine to from Eevee to Cycles. 4. Navigate back to Shader layout and ensure that the box to the left of 'Use Nodes' is toggled on. This worked for me, hopefully it'll work for you too, if so, give this post a thumbs up so others can see! Cheers.
This tutorial was really one of the best, if not the only one, in explaining how to make this super-realistic metal. Thanks for creating it for all of us to enjoy and learn from! It seems like, after doing tons of searches, achieving this realistic rusted metal and worn edges look is a sort of secret. You spilled the beans, and we're grateful! Keep these tutorials coming please!
MAN you save my ass rn, i was pissing me off with substance and sh1t, but this make my life easier, even the tutorial per se is awesome, i love you man, this is exactly the texture i was searching, im gonna put your minimalistic ball in my render to thank you for this hahahshah
Just if anyone, don't work "Pointiness" node. That's because that node need High Poly Geometry, just add subdiv with simple division; and only work in Cycles.
1:47 Paint is nonmetallic, though. So you should really use a mix of diffuse with the paint colour, and glossy without colour. Only metals do coloured reflections.
Hi isak please make sure following step when you start your work first this node work with cycle render engine it does not work with Evee. After that you should add HDRI map for reflection (click the world section + click the color section and under the texture column click the environment texture you can download the HDRI, the link below (hdrihaven.com/hdri/download.php?h=symmetrical_garden&r=2k) after that please go to Render section click the Transparent which is under the Film section( for hide the background ). On the other hand your model has to be subdivide otherwise it does not work for this you can use subdivide surface modifier it subdivision level should be 2 for both section when you done you can play with the nodes :)
Thanks for the tutorial and blend file. Looks great! It doesn't look the same if I add the material to a new object, but I was finally able to get it to look okay after tweaking the pointiness values. I couldn't get it to work in Eevee at all, so I'll try again with a future release.
doesn't work for me, even in Cycles :( when i add the colorramp on mix shader factor, i can only have Red OR white. but i dont have the white edges with red like you have in the video
ok .. my bad, i didn't realize how CLOSE colorramp cursors had to be. i putted the black one to .499 or 498 somethin' like that, and the whit one to 0.5.
I thought 3d builder was good for modeling and textured in 3d paint. (3d builder is like many booleans) It was like a maya and substance painter production workflow. I didn't know what I was missing. I got blender. It was a big good difference. Best part... FREE. Blender guru helps me learn more.
I tried making this material by following the tutorial because the file that I downloaded didn't work in both cycles and evee but I can't even make it, the damage on the edges just won't appear, I didn't bevel the model and it still doesn't work. Is it just outdated or I'm just doing something wrong
Its a good ide btw may i correct that? Arround the minutes 07:xx there you duplicate the color ramp and geometry " however you mixed up with the maximum not a multiply? Which mean one of those is back to an offset (no use). Try to manual subdivision to minize the vertise to keep it at easy render ... & Thanks for the idea
Pointiness node has never really worked for me for some reason. Either I've missed some steps everytime I've tried it or there's something wrong with my test model...
Thanks for the video, good procedure. One newbie question: does the specific values work for just this particular 3d model or it is a constant for every model?
In your file I apply the same texture to a cube. On your object it looks great, but on the cube with the same texture, same renderer, it looks completely unlike your object. (This can be easily tested in your file). I love the process you used, and I love the fact that you shared the file, thank you, but can you explain why this is happening? Why the cube looks so different side-by-side?
I downloaded the blend file and tried applying this material to other shapes, it didn't work. Is there something else you have to do to specify the geometry?
It's probably a bad idea to do this for all your metal objects and then import in Unreal level - I'd recon it will crash immediately (if you have a level filled with 10 objects and this blueprint). Is there a way to "COMBINE" this texture into 1 single texture after all the node work? (in order to make optimizing better for unreal)?

I too had issues, and could not get the color ramp to give the fine detailing at the edges. I was using a simple ico sphere out of the menu, and needed to bevel the edges and add a subdivision modifier to get it to work. It seems the method needs enough geometry to work.
can someone explain why my pointiness is not working T-T . blender version is 2.93.1
I am very sorry. Pointiness is just not supported by Eevee so unfortunately, this material will only work in the Cycles render engine.

Great tutorial!
& Thanks for including the blend file!
The rusted sides only work if there's enough subdivisions on the model. I had to add a subdiv modifier set to 9 for it to work
wtf? 9?
Pointiness doesn´t work for EEVEE unfortunately : ´/
that was the thing i missed! thanks for pointing it out!
Do it in Cycles and bake the pointiness map to use it in Evee. Just take the pointiness into a color ramp, that into an emission shader and bake.
wierdly it worked for me in eevee but not in Cycles
It doesnt work for both
@Yuri Zopov im using 1.90 and pointiness inst working for me not even in cycles
Great explanation. The best tutorial I've had with blender materials so far.

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT IM LOOKING FOR, THANK YOU!!
You are using cycles on a MacBook?
Absolute madlad
Tried this and it just hits the whole model rather than the edges ;_;
I think it depends on the geometry
Check your color ramp
wrong shader input order on the mix node. switch them around.
@@TheCollectorEdd i depends more of the hardware, the original file dont show rusty edges on mi pc
@@pantaredreammaker I don't think it should depend on hardware. Did you use Cycles? Because I guess it won't work on Eevee.
