Here is what I did with my Task force 5 ton splitter - I "defeated" the safety switch by drilling a hole thru both sides of the plastic guards, then inserted a cotter pin to hold the switch in the down position. However, to maintain safety, the unit is now plugged into a momentary contact foot switch, so that I have to have my foot on the foot switch for the motor to become, and remain active. So I can now have one hand (and one foot) operation.
Thanks for the run-down on the WEN. I really like your recommendation of locating the splitter near where you are stacking wood. That saves one extra handing step. Also, bravo on the the table extension idea. Nicely done. Cheers from currently very cold Montana!
If you weld an axe head on the front of the wedge, it will split almost immediately and do much better on big rounds. You lose some travel so round length suffers a bit
Kudos to whoever gave that to you, as a gift. I just ordered mine tonight (Sept. 2022); so your review makes me feel confident that I made the right choice.
I've split close to 10 chords. No Regrets
A fix for the orange knob that stops the retracting is to take a normal bolt that will fit the hole and weld a 5 cm piece of steal to the bolt. That gives you enough torque to easely tighten it enough to not cause slippage

I have a Yardmaxx 5 ton splitter. I put a trigger clamp on the motor button with momentary foot switch. Also for the stroke limiter, you can use a pair of vise grips.

Thank you so much for this video. I only need to do about three cords each winter for my wood stove which is supplemental heat with my heat pump here in central Virginia. Your video went through everything. I don't know much about hydraulics, but what you said about the allen wrench and the dipstick and tilting the unit upright are exactly the things I needed to know. I think one mod I would make is a foot switch for one-handed operation so I can have one hand on the wood. The table idea is excellent. I mean who wants to keep lifting wood up that high over and over? Thanks again for the excellent video!!!

A suggestion for your length adjustment. Take an angle grinder and cut a slight divot into that then the nut will get pinched as apposed to trying to hold a static position. Not too much 1/8" max
@@Mountaintoptractor I was thinking about roughing in some notches with an angle grinder. Never got around to it.
@OldSoulMillennial or you could take a 1x6/1×8/1×10 put a screw in each side and set then on the end between the ram and side bar if you had one too long you could just swap the wood, but this is potential for pinching
I've made several videos with this Wen splitter, but I have to admit that your video is probably better in a lot of ways except too many ads, lol. I noticed at 6:10 you have a drop of fluid on the end, so either the end gasket is leaking (like mine recently) or your dipstick is not tight. That's why your fluid was low. Also at 9:10 you recommend the placing angled cut pieces with the angle down. I disagree. You will eventually get a piece that jams underneath the ram and is a royal pain to remove. Best to recut the piece flat/flatter or don't split it at all. That catch table you made is sweet. On large pieces, there is a lot of down pressure on those guides and in your case the table, so I made a free standing wood table instead. Again though, really great video. This one should have a lot more views than it does.

You know, if you were to design and sell a bolt on table like that (no welding required for the installer) I, and I’m sure others, would be willing to purchase it from you! I’m really serious.

Good video. I bought one of these splitters second hand over the weekend, and picked up several tips and tricks after watching your video. I agree with the clamp on stop, and the table idea is a great idea.
Wood clamp on the safety button and you're good to go.
as crafty as you are- adapt a piece of all thread an nut for your stop-- easy !
Here's a suggestion. Only wear gloves that fit you well--not excessively large. I USED to have 10 fingers. Now I have 9 3/4!
I've got an older HF 7 ton unit. It has split everything I've thrown at it. Mounted it on a old garden trailer and tow it behind my lawn tractor.

@@OldSoulMillennial I have power in the few locations I do my splitting, but also have a small generator when needed that I can also tow. My property is divided by a stream. The BIG logs get split before hauling them to the wood shed. I've tackled a few of those monster logs as well. Slow and steady and they split with no issues.
You should make and sell those Wen tables.
What was the metal table from ? I’m asking since it may help me find a similar piece. How thick is it? If you had to start from scratch and buy material, what size would you I buy? Would you get any better assistance with a similar table on the other side? Thank you.

I know nothing about splitting wood but on the ram end would it not be better to have a splitter on it also?
Interesting thought. I would say no and here's why. I routinely run into very dry pieces of wood that pop and shoot out on the wedge side. Sometimes these pieces shoot 10 feet away from the splitter. By having a wedge on only one side, it gives the operator better control of the split, it gives the operator an expectation on where the wood will fly to and it gives the operator a safe zone. Also, sometimes the wedge gets stuck in knotted wood. By not having a wedge on the one side, it allows the ram to retract. A double wedge would cause an absolute headache if a knotted piece gets jammed.
@David Cleaves I believe that most of the electric log splitters only power the ram in just one direction (extension). When the ram retracts, it is because of a spring pushing it back to the fully retracted position. If you w as watch the video closely, you will notice the ram retracting all by itself when the log is removed. my gas powered log splitter, the ram is powered by the hydraulics in both directions. Hopefully I understood your comment and answered it correctly.
does it split both green and seasoned wood both?
Yes it does
They make a foot pedal so you don't need your thumb
They should have made it one hand operated.
I could break those red oak rounds down the middle with my Fiskars X27.
