  • long laborious demo of using the wen wood splitter.
I found it cumbersome to use alone so modified it for myself so I can pay more attention to the wood instead of the odd controls

Thank you for this video! If you haven't already done so...I would recommend that everyone, use a heavier gauge extension cord. The shorter and heavier gauge... the better. It's surprising how much more torque the splitter has, if it wasn't for the voltage drop across the long extension cord. The other option would be to run a small generator within a short distance from the splitter.

I use a C-clamp to hold down the power button then plug the power cord into a foot switch so I can turn it on with my foot and have one hand free to balance the log on the machine . I also have a block of hardwood to put in when the ram does not go quite far enough to completely split the log.

I have had a WEN for 3 years now. Put you wood in with the "smile" upside down. It will stop it from popping off the splitter.

I've been enjoying mine too. Tricks I've found for one handed operation is to use your hip or pelvis to hold the lever down, push the button to move the press. You could also just bungee cord the lever down and use the button as well. On this machine the lever is kinda pointless honestly. I do wish it had more power, but it does enough medium and smaller to make up for it, since it is pretty low cost. Shorter pieces can launch pretty hard out of it :D. Oh and if you ever run into the ram not returning all the way, WD40 the center piston or whatever it's called. Made mine work far better very quickly.

I just carefully drilled holes in the tabs on each side of the switch and slide a cotter key in there to hold the button at ON position and then use the HF momentary foot switch, works very well.
I have our splitter sitting on top of our FARM-TUFF wagon at a corner which puts it a good working height and makes it easy for my wife to grab the split wood off the wagon to stack it.
Our wood burners are small so I cut the logs to about 12-14" and the WEN splitter handles the little logs with ease.

I have a Wen 6.5 also and have split a few cords of red oak with it. I like your mods for the lever and the power button. I use a on/off foot pedal from harbor freight and a clamp on the button. I pull on a plastic cord tied to lever. This allows me a one handed operation. I always situate myself towards the ram side as wood can shoot forward with velocity at times. What kind of wood were you splitting in your video? It was very stringy and difficult to split. Great work

I see you can buy this splitter with a foot peddle switch, included.

Wearing flip flops and no gloves?? Com' on, man!

Just my opinion here, but the logs should always be positioned in the saddle STRAIGHT, or parallel to the ram, not at an angle. Putting the log in the cradle at an angle to the direction the ram is pushing is going to make it harder for any splitter to split the wood. Also, you might want to take your angle grinder and put a nice sharp edge on the wedge.

thanks - correct but the stumps were not cut straight and i had to compensate for that, plus working splits off a piece of wood that far exceeds the machines size requires some angled methods-

Agreed kebo. With mine I run across wood that are angled, mostly because I'm a chainsaw rookie :D, and always make sure the wood on the press end is straight, the wedge end can be whatever. Most press wedges, blades, whatever, are obtuse edges and not meant to be razor sharp, just look at a splitting maul or heck a gas splitter. Of course dont want it too dull though either. I did an experiment and applied a dab of WD40 to the blade when cutting a trouble log, it actually made it split it where it wouldnt before.

I'm guessing that you have had pieces hit you in the gut or groin before since you're using appropriate caution on the tougher splits. Speaking from experience here. It looks like your vent screw is closed in the video. Needs to be open while splitting.

Log bites on the thumb hurts! Your hear that gator snap its mouth? 2:31 if that was your thumb? It could been snapped off

Ya, it's not a very good idea to split wood with short and fuckin flip flops on! WTF?
I still can't figure out why people (or the manufacturers) don't install some kind of table or plate on the back of the splitter behind the splitting wedge to collect the wood pieces instead of just letting them fall on the ground (or your half bare shower shoes!)

I could split that by hand easily in a lot less time. That machine is about as useful as an electric snow blower

not true trust me- I tried. The wood we were handling was intensely hard to split. We have 2 long 4-5ft axes that were sharpened. And im not even including the ones with knots- next to impossible. Im in shape and work me rear end off as a full time marine mechanic lifting heavy things, dont confuse me with a mamsy pamsy boy with soft hands. This thing is legit..

even if you could split this small amount of wood "in a lot less time" you cant do it for hours on end. we have machines for a reason.
