So only use royalty free music and sounds. Im not splitting my revenue almost 50% for a song that takes up less than 20% of my video and is most likely just background music. That whole model is bonkers.

As you are putting up your video RUclips will tell you if there is a claim on any copyright material you are using. It's not necessarily a strike--just that any money you make on that video will go to the copyright holder. But you have the option of changing it out for something public domain before you post.

@@shadowdemonaer it's not possible for someone to copyright a song that has already been registered by the rightful composer so you can''t get scammed that way. It's a complicated business but if you register your work with a PRO they will protect your interests. RUclips automatically checks all your material for prior registered ownership. I refer to the music; I don't know if they have the photos covered as well so I try to just use my own work or public domain. Before you put your work out there, register it with a PRO and start now learning all the complex rules of licensing. There are companies that for a small fee will record your original compositions by date; it's not copyright but you can prove when you wrote it should the necessity arise.

Currently still watching. I was skeptical of the new music option back when I first heard because I'm aware of how easy it is to misunderstand little details & run into issues hence I will stick with royalty free music or services such as Epidemic Sound for long form videos, I'd rather not get blindsided with strikes or be forced to share future revenue I may earn. it's tough enough to keep track & remember even the basics let alone what could become a new risk of demonization or strike especially when we have safer options available for music, but I respect RUclips for trying to give us additional options, thanks Nick.

RUclips needs to create the ability for creators to change out the music on their videos without having to delete the video and re-uploading it. This could be made possible to upload the music as a separate file from the videos and audio-like the thumbnails. To ensure the music plays in the right place transitions/spacers could be used. Many music subscriptions have it where if you cancel your membership you lose the right to continue using the music you have used. This just seems wrong to me. Rights to previously used music should be protected from cancellation (by either party) and Rights revoked going forward. I will settle for headache free mediocre music that get caught in that trap. Thanks for letting us know.

Music is the most needlessly greedy industry. Anyone else who wants to create a video essay on a films, photography, or artwork can go ahead and do so without issue under fair use. But god forbid there’s a few seconds of a distorted song playing in the background of a baby shower video, the music industry drops the copyright claim hammer on those parents. Music copyrights are disproportionately aggressive… the fact that you can’t even hum a song, or sing it (cover) in your own voice… come on. That’s the equivalent of not being able to say a movie quote in conversation. It’s ridiculous…

I even get copyright claims on royalty free music. I've gotten to the point... whenever one of my videos starts getting commercials, I just make the video private and I don't worry about letting people see it anymore. I know it's kind of defeating the point of having a RUclips channel, but I will never be monetized. Even whenever I would start getting a certain amount of subscribers and I wanted them, all of a sudden like 80 would disappear overnight. They weren't unsubscribing 🤦‍♀️ They were removed by platform.
I've also had some videos that were removed w1ith absolutely no notification as of why. I think it had to do with picsart because I tried to go up against them and get money back and they lied and said they gave me my money back but never really did and continued to withdraw money. I'm wondering if it has something to do with that app and if they have the right to have videos removed. One video removed with no explaination had a clip of a friend that I will never see again. I wish they could at least give me the option to make it private so that I can keep that footage up my friend.
Also, I hate that they remove threats. I clicked on a notification recently because it was a threat, but by the time I got to it, RUclips had already removed it. And obviously I can't access the notification again. Then I can't even screen save it to show it to the police. It's ridiculous how they protect these people.

Question that's kinda related, You said that licensing for Shorts is different.
I just made a Valorant Gaming Short that included "Eye of the tiger" and the copyright scanner said it found a copyright but the creator said folks could use it on RUclips for free... awesome!
My question is: If the creator decides to change that in the future, what happens to my YT Short?
I'm a small time creator for fun (just over 100 subs) are small creators treated differently for copyright?

    • @NickNimmin
      @NickNimmin  Год назад +1

With shorts I’m not sure what RUclips has worked out with the companies so unfortunately I don’t have an answer for you.

    • @Marylogical
      @Marylogical Год назад +1

Serethi, Who is "the creator" in the case of your gaming video? The game company? The original writer of the song?
Game companies do sometimes allow their music included with the game (not always!) to be used in your creative content provided you're not just ripping out the music.
But we all know "Eye of the Tiger" song is included in one of the Rocky Balboa films. Which means the rights to That Song belong to the producers of that movie.
If you are not able to provide a written license of some sort of written proof you are allowed to use a piece of music, you are open to copyright strikes.
Examples : If you use RUclips audio library music, you can screen capture the attributable or non-attributable license on the screen next to the song as you hover your curser over the license next to the song. Keep it in a folder next to the song you download and give the screenshot the name of the song.
Or, if someone allows you to use their music, make sure you have a copy of the type of license they are allowing you to use with it for free. (See Kevin MacLeod site incompetech.com for examples. You can copy and paste each of his licenses for each song, and each songs registration number, so you can always prove he gave you permission to use his song.
Gaming videos have terms of service you can read through and keep a copy of in a folder near your game or somewhere on your device you can quote copy and paste from if you need to prove the game gives you permission to use their accompanying music. Sometimes you can use the background music in created content you make of their game, and Sometimes you can't.
Minecraft Mashups maps may have music copyrighted by Disney, for instance, in which Disney states emphatically that you are NOT allowed to use their accompanied music included in that world game.
A song re-use in a game or cartoon or other media that you know was originally used in a movie or popular TV series should always be suspect to use in your own created content, as you do not have the same licensing arrangement with them as the game or cartoon or tv show does.
I hope this info helps you.

Often people will take a dance video and then add other music to it that was not actually being danced to, sometimes they will add a completely different genre etc. Because I'm trying to provide a platform to education people on authentic music and dance from the Caribbean when it is altered significantly it defeats the purpose.

I can't find anything about how to be a part of it, how to get in contact with the artist/publisher, and if they can greenlight/give licenses freely outside if Creator Music. In the general phonk genre, they barely offer licenses and revenue sharing, and i see a lot of grey symbols with a lot of songs I see in popular videos. The dumbest thing is the RUclips shorts thing is those still receive monetization in shorts but not regular videos? Seems a bit sus to me.

License Expiry will allow RUclips to remove your video or your entire Channel because of any copyright strikes you receive after license expires.
This will in effect cause content creators to habitually remove videos before their license expires to prevent copyright strikes,
Also creating a clearance of RUclips's servers. Over time there might be a flow of content that is no longer available.

Epidemic Music, Creator Mix, Harris Heller's Stream Beats and Eposvox's Backing Track are absolutely the only sources from which I would get and use music and/or sound effects.
Epidemic a person pays for and has a clear and easy to understand license.
Harris Heller's Stream Beats is free and does include a license to protect ones self.
Creator Mix is from these 2 Brothers here and I trust them since I learned of them from David Foster. Although I don't know as much about their service and if it includes a license or it's exact terms. I did read about it but I don't recall at the moment.
Eposvox I just trust because he is a good guy that does a lot to help the creator community content wise.
I've used every service I've mentioned in my live streams many times with the exception of Creator Mix, all without issue. The exception meaning I've never used Creator Mix. Not that I don't like, trust them or had issues with. Not at all. It's just I've never got around to using their music... Yet. I surely will at some point.
This new RUclips Creator Music deal has way too many potential 'Gotchas' and ways the rug can get pulled out from under you for me to ever consider it as it is currently presented. That's a big NOT HAPPENING from me.
Personally I mostly use Epidemic as I pay for it. If I wanna switch it up then Stream Beats or Backing Tracks.
Screw FREE Royalty music. They can still file claims and come after your revenue.

May I helpfully suggest you keep a record of the titles of your videos, included songs and dates you published, along with dates your licenses expire? You can only rely on yourself. Your administration is up to you and RUclips does not care if you get deleted or not.
I suspect this new Creator Music program of You tube's will cause a lot of content creators to delete their videos or shorts just before licenses expire, clearing You tube's servers for newer content. I also suspect that tons of content creators will be receiving strikes and bans once things get going and licenses start expiring.

@@NickNimmin I figured that option out. So, once I click on a revenue-sharing song, since there's not a download button, I'd click the artist/ video itself. There is a download button under the artist's actual video on their video page, but it's like a music service that I'm supposed to belong to through RUclips. It asks me if I want to try it, which I don't. lol. That's misleading to me, as I'd think if it's a revenue-sharing license, I should be able to download it just like the other options, albeit with different inconveniences. This option isn't totally fleshed out because although I have access to Creator Music via my RUclips Studio, I apparently don't have access to the download feature under an artist's video that is being classified as revenue sharing without a license. I'll keep utilizing the free songs until they get all this ironed out. Thanks again for always helping us get clarifications!

Thank you so much for this video. So basically, if you use a music service now, keep using the service. These record companies are not going to make it financially feasible for us to use their music.
1st choice - pay for the rights...then find out you have an expiration date and your RUclips video is useless and has to be muted.
2nd Choice - let record company take up to 50% of your revenue. Hmmm, hard pass.

Buckeye, I read Nick said somewhere else that RUclips will be merging Creator Music with their audio library or vice versa. May I suggest making absolutely sure which music you are choosing to use when you use their service. Always check the little license information button next to each song you're considering using.
I have a habit of screen capturing the print of the "non-attributable" license that is next to the song I've highlighted and keep a copy of the screenshot.
I also Still attribute the song I use in my video to the owner and in my description along with a note that I got it from RUclips audio library using by permission through their non-attributable license, because I don't trust RUclips to know it, and I don't trust the scammers that maybe have ripped the songs from the library and try to copyright strike me or demand money from me.
