The Hard Truth About Managing People

  • I really wanted to share this talk about trusting employees, giving them trust and then learning how they operate from there rather than the traditional "trust is earned" stance.
    Also, for anyone that is confused, because I'm a very alpha character and I believe that the new "man" is growing in emotional intelligence and "soft skills". Kindness, empathy, and gratitude, which were once considered "soft" are now becoming cool.

    I once had a shitty manager and I was a high performing individual and my results started to decrease when he took over. Shortly after he got fired things started to improve again. We did lose a few people. But just providing an example of how a shitty manager/individual can drive people out. Treat others with respect and simply the way you wanna treated, shit isn’t hard..

    I AM SO HAPPY YOU MADE THIS VIDEO! I really have this question all the time! I am very young for having my own business. I started with my boyfriend out of the back of a local bagel shop in their off hours at night when I graduated college. I had no money. I was living in my car with my boyfriend in the parking lot of the bagel shop. Now it's grown to it's first storefront location and doesn't look like it is going to stop there! So now, we have 26 employees and being only 23, I am still definitely learning how to empower them each day! Many of our employees are actually older then me which is pretty crazy to think about!

    I am beginning to understand.. The more I watch my thoughts the more I realize how deep these ultimate judgements really go and how unfounded the entire construct can be. By dropping my judgemenst of others it seems that self-judgement also ceases . And the free space that has been created by not judging easily fills with empathy :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts Gary, so much appreciated

    Love this, and how right you are. This is exactly what we've discovered both in our teaching and in our storytelling. If you trust people and allow them to be able to make projects their own as well as yours, they can do incredible work, and ultimately means we create much richer projects than anyone of us could create on our own. I also agree with you with regards to timing, as well as sourcing out the right people to put that trust in, as we've had to let go of some people that became too entitled and egotistical within our company. The flip side of that are the incredibly creative, loyal and hard working people we work with day to day, because of that trust and because we share the spotlight with them.

    I agree with everything you just said, and I for myself see judging others or criticizing others as more spiritual, meaning, I believe and even more, KNOW, through studying certain things now for a while that we are all connected, we are all an expression of one source. And it’s just true and real that if I do bad to another, judge them, treat them bad etc it’s all going to come back to me FOR FACT because we are dealing with energy.
    And intuitively we all know that, like, why would ANYBODY choose hate and negativity over love and positivity?
    Because they don’t understand.
    Thank you Gary, you light up this world in a very very good way, you are a huge inspiration to me personally, love you! 🙏🏻❤️

    • @UBCMETCommunity
      @UBCMETCommunity 5 лет назад

      Interesting ideas. Certainly treating others well brings you more love and tends to make you a happier person, but not health, comfort, or financial success. I'd love to hear how those factor into your theory.

    • @enesyildiz8596
      @enesyildiz8596 5 лет назад

      UBC MET sure.
      You have to understand who and what you are. You are NOT this flesh and bone that you see physically, and yet you are it too. You are a spiritual being, you have an intellect and you live in a physical body. You don’t have a soul, you ARE a soul. And it’s what’s going on within you that manifests on the external world. If there is sickness know that it originated inside through wrong thinking/negative thoughts, because thought is one of the most potent forms of energy there is. Any thought you entertain consciously and internalize effects your biochemistry, it sets up a particular vibration in your body, and the vibration you’re in then dictates how you act/behave and also what you’re going to attract to you.

    Great episode! If I may add to the idea of “emotional intelligence”, I believe the beginning of raising our emotional intelligence is first having a willingness to allow our courage to help us be more open to our own emotions. Gradually this turns to emotional confidence, and lends to our being able to move from empathy to a higher space of compassion - where we can then more positively influence others towards solutions. Loved this one!

    This wisdom resonated with me. I am characterized by candor and nonjudgement, which I personally think of as forgiveness, allowing the opinions to run through your mind and respect despite. I’m certainly not all there on feeling people and knowing what to do with it. It would help me a lot if you tried to explain how to cultivate that intuition for those of us to whom it comes weakly. Dude, people spend way too much time on what you’re talking about around 9:00.
    All that does is 1, they’re holding themselves back from producing (because they’re too busy worried about if someone is real or not), or 2, gives that person an excuse not to move forward in doing something substantial with their own lives.
    Also, I love your perspective on valuing your employees. Although I’ve only managed a small team in my prior job, I carried that same level of empathy and truly caring about my people.
    And I’ll carry that into my current business as my partner and I will more than likely need to hire staff towards the end of the year l (which is exciting!)

    "The world is grey." - I love that line a lot, and I couldn't agree more that "everything's within context"... I feel like that makes it hard sometimes because if you look at people that way, you can't pin *anything* down. But I guess that makes sense, it's not like people are binary. Great content as always Gary, love watching you while I work on my art! :>
