Does Toontrack's New EZ Bass Redefine The Standard For Modern Electric Bass Software Instruments?

  • Modern computers are so powerful; it seems like every new software instrument release these days runs, or streams, gigabytes of samples while simultaneously juggling a multitude of real-time sample-accurate playback parameters. It seems to me that the main challenge facing modern software developers is managing complexity.

    I can't wait to start using this. Lately I've been starting all my songwriting productions in midi so I have the flexibility to easily change tempos, keys, and just do a lot of experimenting. Then I go back after I've nailed down all the songs parameters, structure and the bulk of the arrangement and replace most of it with real recordings. I already use EZdrummer and EZkeys for this, so this sort of completes the back beat portion of the writing. I've been using Scarbee for this, which is okay, but this just seems so much better and faster.

      my problem was getting bass players so i learned how to play bass, then drummers were hard to find, so learned that to half assed anyway so i get a studio to record the different tracks and rehearse. EZ drummer 2 & Superior drummer 3 now EZ bass fuck yea!! definitely nothing ez about it, there is a learning curve for sure but its well worth the time invested.

      It's not a bad way to write music ... but yeah, as good as all this software has gotten, it still sounds a little canned. You still gotta have the ideas to get it out in the first place ... so I don't think the tech is the problem. It's what people are doing with it that makes it boring. "I don't think the equipment could take over, .. We do rely on it a lot .. we couldn't do what we do as we do it without it... we could still do a good entertaining musical show without it I suppose.. but all those things are down to how you control them and whether you're controlling them, and not the other way around. It's all extensions of what's coming out of our heads ... and you've got to remember that you've got to have it inside your head to get it out at all anyway... and the equipment isn't actually thinking of what to do any of the time. It couldn't control itself." - David Gilmour

    It's pretty damn good, but I wish there was an option to tighten the release a bit and offer manual string selection? However, they haven't sampled the entire fretboard! Also, on the presets that offer mid range EQ, the mid frequency knob is curiously labeled as a percentage?

    • @nichttuntun3364

      @ASRDGEEK cool. Yes it's an incredible tool. I completely exchanged a muddy sounding live played bass via EZ bass and pushed the complete mix way up to positive. The audio tracker works perfect. I'm really excited. Plus I can use the groove section for my own compositions. I'm keyboard-piano player and sometimes struggle playing cool bass grooves of different genres myself. Those days have gone now. Totally cool and inspiring plugin for musicians as well as for mix engineers.

    What if I'm not interested in the software but I want to program my own notes into the piano roll? (which seems easier if you ask me)

    • @zendakk
      @zendakk 3 года назад

      You can record + edit MIDI in your DAW's piano roll directly, and also drag parts (or everything) from EZbass to the piano roll. Using the grid editor in EZbass has the advantage of doing the articulations in a nice visual manner, without having to drop in awkward key switch notes in MIDI manually, which is always a bit tedious. But you can freely choose your approach and combine them into whatever workflow suits you.

      Best of luck, Bro. Hopefully you won't.

    • @TheRealSorav
      @TheRealSorav 4 года назад

      If you're good you won't man. First of all there are so many articulations and variations that are just not possible real time. Like slapping, or just different variations of hitting the fret. Let's not mention picking at different parts of the neck, real time palm muting, and everything else. Yes, this is cool if you just wanna track some realistic bass tracks in your home studio. But what about realtime session musicians? They will know how to react organically to your music, and a preprogrammed bass cannot do that. What if you want to program a vibrato? Oh you can program a vibrato? Fine, fine, and fine. But its a waste of time I'm telling you. A good session musician will knock it out FAST. While you're over here humanizing every note, adding slight timing variations that sound HUMAN and ALIVE, and even nudging the midi notes here and there CAN NOT emulate it. A real player moves with the groove, and if you want to program a groove as good as legendary bassists, have fun slaving away at your piano roll for over 5 hours. I'll hire a session musician to do it in 1 hour, maybe even less.
