The part about how to test if the foundation is true reminded me of a significant part of my deconversion. I was struggling with why Christianity wasn't working for me or anyone in my circle, in-spite of everyone claiming it was working, Then in a moment of clarity it occurred to me that maybe it wasn't working was because it wasn't true.

100% belief in anything is an extreme position. Growing up autistic I realized that we cannot depend and rely 100% upon our senses and perceptions. Seeing is not always believing.
Most of the believers are Christian and have the impulse to say they are 100% sure of their faith. I have a suspicion that they are trying to convince themselves. In the Bible Jesus often remarked on how little faith people had, and also on how just the faith of a mustard seed could move mountains. In the Bible people prayed for an increase of faith... there is great evidence in the text of many characters being at what appears less than 100% sure
I also wonder if the greater the faith the greater for the potential of doubt. A little to a fair amount of doubt is manageable. People can recognize their beliefs may not be true and still want to believe. To start with zero doubts and then start to have some can bring about a great disillusionment.
    What wonderful interviews.

can't stand to watch when the interlocutor realizes (s)he has no argument and virtually everything that comes out is but a word salad. Just a jumble of nothing, like a tangled ball of mismatched threads; even when you can get a grip on one of them, it turns out to be very short and disappointing. "At the end of the day" is one of my greatest pet peeves when it comes to questioning/debating...like that's their last little hope they have to get you to fall in line and see each other as equals. It's funny but disturbing to watch adults struggle like this.

Like he acknowledges its possible that information could arise that shows faith is not a good pathway to truth, so that alone should make an impact on his faith since he should be aware there is a chance that he is believing in nonsense. But he doesn't drop his %, sounds dishonest to me.

It really stands out that he doesn't care whether or not what he believes is true. I've seen so many of these interviews end with the subject walking away and saying that they've been given something to think about, however I understand that it's rare for them to get in touch with Anthony to arrange a follow up. Presumably they either don't think about it or decide that they'd prefer to remain willfully ignorant.
I guess if you can get just a few of them to start caring, it's worthwhile. More power to anthony and everyone who participates in SE.

He said you've got me thinking, but that could mean he'll be thinking about how he can better rationalize his belief. It doesn't necessarily mean that he's going to start caring whether or not what he believes is true.

Austin’s remarks at 2:34 - 3:00 prompted me to recall a conversation I had about faith with a mother of two, full-grown children. All of them were affiliated with the Episcopalian sect of Christianity. She said to me, "I don't care what my kids believe in as long as they believe in something." On its face, her reply sounded open minded. Delving deeper however, apparently she was asserting that any unsubstantiated belief in a mythological god or spirit is better than a rational viewpoint in no such deity or supernatural phenomenon.

Austin doesn't want the truth and he doesn't want you to know the truth either. We already have the truth and that's evolution so everybody can say they're looking for the truth but we already have it. Everyone's in denial and that's very sad state of the human condition.

Not everyone WANTS to be in denial. Indoctrination from an early age sets a paradigm, and those are not easy to change. Especially when the country you live in is filled with people who reassure you that the emperor has clothes.

    • @1weirddoe571

If you tell a toddler that someone 2 thousand years ago walked on water what percentage would believe you? Now if you tell them they're going to hell if they don't believe it, how would that change the percentage? Right, it's indoctrination--adults should know better than bullying kids and especially terrorizing them with "hell" but they cleverly disguise it as "Jesus' love" to soften the harsh message. They're cowards. They should pick on someone their own size. Toddlers? Really? What Terrorizing Bullies. It takes a terrorized adult to discard their thinking to say that someone walked on water, rose from the dead, parted the sea, made wine from water, fed 5,000 with some fish, ...I'm vegetarian by the way. Alex O'Conner just did a video on animal pain what did you think?

@@1weirddoe571 Nice, I loved watching Alex's and Anthony Magnabosco's conversation recently, and it was what opened my eyes to street epistemology and its effective use of what I interpret to be the Socratic method. Is that the one you were referring to?
On adults bullying their kids, remember that these are adults who were not able to flee their own indoctrination, and who truly believe that their children will be so much better off believing in their god. The combination of a punishment (THE punishment) for not believing and a reward (THE reward) for being a believer build a tall hurdle for people of faith to overcome. People of some religions even interpret their texts to say that those who leave the faith should be killed by the believers, as icing on this already bizarre cake.
What these devotees to street epistemology are doing is so very important for ushering in a future where mankind is acting (more) rationally, and we are in dire need of such a future!

I got an occasional sense, as things moved along, that there was a long thread of deepities that ran through much of Austin's statements/viewpoints. I am amazed that you were able to keep a consistent train of thought, as I had to continually pause and rewind to try and see if I could connect the dots to his thought processes. And I'm still not certain that I have wrapped my arms around the foundations of his philosophy. He certainly did not convey the typical evangelical attitude, even though he obviously is an evangelical Christian. His manner of thought brought to mind the discussions of Douglas Hofstadter in his wonderfully interesting book, "I Am A Strange Loop". Austin's thinking process often seems to mimic that "strange loop".

something that is striking to me is how he views relationships as not being possible with people who don't believe as he does. when from the other perspective as an atheist I am more than happy to have deep and meaningful relationships with friends and family from all different points of views whether that be religious, political or any other.

I hear religious people talk about how religion is so fulfilling and it is the only approach to the world that can be fulfilling. I can safely say that while I was christian, and there were some times where I had peace, overall I was just constantly filled with doubt and questions. It wasn't until I threw away my baseless faith that I had stable fulfillment and "peace" in my life. Learning more about secular philosophy helped me to self reflect so much better than Christianity ever did since I was always trying to figure out how the hell Christianity was even real, rather than figuring out myself.

I like this interview a lot Anthony. Nice work for Austin to be brave and honest to really be open and thoughtful. I really like how you asked Austin to consider how would he test the reliability of his faith. Austins response of "good question, in trying to think" was a great moment of doxastic openness from someone who is 100% solid in their faith. I think this was a great first conversation.
I am curious why you chose not to use the example of a Hindu believer with 100% confidence in their Vishnu using the mechanism of faith, and how would we know who is correct. That seems like such a strong question. Was it just a choice to go in another direction, or is this something you are using less often? I am guessing maybe that as Austin was willing to think over your first question it was not necessary to present another deep question?
I'm going to watch SE: Austin (2) now, looking forward to what Austin has to say.

We kinda have to have faith in the assumption that the future follows similar to how the past has occurred. If you’re going to say the past is evidence for that, you’re invoking the assumption you’re trying to prove. At the end of the day you have to just have some amount of faith in it. Question I’ve not heard yet. Say I have a real flesh and blood god right here. You can touch and feel him. He talks to you all the time in your apartment and those of his believers. He heals, like none of his followers ever ended up in a hospital. He protects, only his followers are pulled from the ruble of a collapsed building after 12 days. And now somebody else with a different religion says you need faith to believe some stuff happened 2000yrs ago. Which would you go with? Faith? Or what everyone sees and feels and experiences?

  • @Bilbo383

    • @magnabosco210
      @magnabosco210  2 года назад +1

First, make sure that you’ve totally understand how they are defining that word. They may be equating the word faith with belief. There’s a video on my channel about faith called ‘how faith ends’ that discusses how slippery this work can be. If they are using faith as a reason, ask if faith only serves to increase a persons confidence and doesn’t decrease. Compare that “one-way” attribute to other reasons that they hold for other beliefs. Do they think that reasons should serve to either increase or decrease our confidence depending on the quality of that reason? There’s all sorts of directions that you can go but you will definitely have to work out your terms first.

Most of the people look for stuff to confirm what they alredy chose to follow or made to follow from their childhhod on.
    They never challenge their worldview...
but manage to convince themselves that they chose their religion.
A lot of Muslimas I have talked to that don't wear the hijab have told me that they aren't ready yet or strong enough,
but see it as their duty or something to aspire to, to cover.
Some even admire other Muslimas wearing the niqab. It's a sign of strength and commitment to Islam.
It seems like american kids see it as a weakness to carry even a tiny percentage of doubt.
Actually a lot of Theists see it as a lack of commitment and blame it on themselves, to not be convinced enough.
They think they haven't tried or studied enough.
I can relate a bit because my deeply religious mother used to cut off all of my questions wirh a:
Doubt is a sin, so stop it!

Dr. Wier In many countries, “faith” and “belief” are synonymous. In United States, while some people do sometimes use them synonymously, they’re often used very differently. In my area people usually define “belief” as “something that I think is true”, and as you may have observed, “faith” can have a *ton* of different meaning, but at the heart of it, it usually means “the reason I think something is true” or “the method I used to be able to say my reason for thinking something is true is warranted.” So rather than be dogmatic about word usages, I would suggest paying very close attention to how the people themselves are using those words, write them down, and then go with it for the duration of the conversation. You’ll likely make huge progress. Thanks for watching.

It seems that traditional symbolic Boolean logic is not adequate to describe or support "spiritual truths".... for example, if i say "it is A or B and it is not A" then most people would conclude "it must be B"....but how do we know that to be true with 100% certainty? ... what if this system of logic is not "correct"....or only correct when certain conditions are satisfied? Further, who can prove such an audacious claim??
and this conjunction of a disjunction and a negation is just one of infinitely many possible compound propositions we can examine.
....hence Anthony is in the same dilemma as his "clients".....put in another way, how can Anthony be 100% confident that the system of logic we all seem to agree upon is in fact "correct"? it is, after all, this very system of logic upon which his arguments and presentations depend!
how is his putting 100% confidence in our system of logic any different from someone putting 100% confidence in their belief in God (or any other claim)? How can he "test" our traditional system of logic to see that it is reliable and dependable every time without fail....how can we test our system of logic to see that it can never fail? and if it did, what would that look like and how would we detect it? This question is isomorphic to that which he poses to so many of his guests.
can somebody out there help me separate how these are any different?

After reading up more on faith from some philosophical literature and christian pieces, i now understand that anthony has not read the research on faith. If he doesn't read up on faith from Philosophical and theological literature, then his SE will not remotely work.

  • @sergeyfox2298
    @sergeyfox2298 4 года назад

So anthony doesn't realize that his definition of faith is the belief model of faith where evidence is required to justify claims, that faith is a truth-existence model to determine God's existence, where Austin defines faith as an interpersonal phenomena with the assumption that God exists. God exists in austin world, so faith is just seeing that God, given that it's true, is a reliable source of one's advancement. This God exists, and because this God has done wonders for Austin, then he has a trust that this God is not just real but good. From the theist view, faith is not about determining God's existence because he already exists. To Theists, atheists sound silly when they try to convince Theists that God doesn't exist when he does; God's blessings and works, their practical life which is spirit led , and the evidence of this spirit led life being the blessings, justifies his existence. Austin world doesn't have to verify God's existence Because god can do that by merely existing and showing it by doing good stuff.
Indeed, if Anthony does not go to the books to research more on faith, SE is going to be seen as awkward to theists.

I am thinking about one way to test faith :
You could test any specific statement in the scriptures to see if it holds truer than its opposite.
Do that for all statements and you would find the truest religion.
Let us take the exemple of the miracle fishing :
The statement is basically "Persist in what you do, and you will eventually have great results". The opposite would be "Give up your activity if it doesn't yield results immediately"
So it is a matter of persistence VS flexibility. Which one objectively works best for individuals, which one objectively works best for communities ? This could be measured (though it would be a tough study).

"how do you live out your atheism" i'd say his, i define myself as an artist, but only because it's a convenient label, i don't believe in gods, i don't feel the need and in that regard i'm not even an atheist, i just am. atheism isn't (to me) a way of life, it gives me the freedom to believe in what ever the hell i want, or not, i have no sky fairy dictating to me. then i'd say, did you know that the egyptians believed in bastet for a thousand years? a cat goddess?
12:00 i think he said it all "that's my personality type" sometimes i think the subject *and* you can wind up thinking you are talking about one thing but really you're talking about another, you think you're discussing faith, but so far at least i think you're just both fanning the breeze about personalities. 13:00 - excuse me, did he just say that faith doesn't matter?

+Raoul Borans I disagree. I've known people who relate to others in a style kinda like this, and it was basically genuine. Sometimes they pick it up from the people around them, sometimes it derives from some values or aspirations or even just a style affinity(we all have them).
Then, you add in the fact that this is unexplored territory for the guy. Anyone in that situation begins to grasp for responses, if not answers, in the moment simply to keep the communication going. Silence is awkward, and so is obvious confusion, so people look for anything to avoid that kind of moment. We all end up falling back on autopilot responses occasionally when we hit those ambiguous situations.
The important part is that the ideas were planted, and that this guy was big enough to entertain the discussion at all, knowing from the start that it would be a somewhat threatening conversation. Gotta respect at least that.
