How much tax you pay is irrelevant. What you _get_ for the money you have left over is all that matters. I pay twice as much tax as an american... But I work 32 hours a week in a job that requires 0 education or experience and all my expenses (living in a 3 room apartment in an expensive city) is roughly 40% of my pay check. After I payed for EVERYTHING for the whole month, I still have 60% of the money I was payed after taxes. So... even with twice the tax, I still get about 5 times more for the hours I work compared to the average american. You can have a billion dollars, if a loaf of bread cost 900 million, youre still poor.
I am Happy to be a swede and live here. I am old, retired, not overly healthy. My Insulin is Free... zero cost. My doctor visits gets free when i reached about 200$ i payments. Sometimes i get at least 10 months of free doctor every year. Same about medications, passing a limit everything is 0:- . I had a heart surgery in 2011.. It cost me about 40$ including ambulance transport ( about 5 miles) I am never hungry, i never freeze. sure i cant travel to pacific islands every year but i live a very good life. Live in a 3 room apartment always warm, often too warm. we have hi High speed internet, cable TV. library in the basement, Sauna and big nice laundry room included in the rent. Yes even a DIY room where i can make woodwork if i want. I am totally happy with my taxes and I am happy to be born in Scandinavia/ Nordic countries. We are at the top of the list in happiness in several classes. ❣

I've been an employer before and know that taxes can be a struggle sometimes.., but on the whole they're good and the basis for a generally high standard of living.

Living standards is pretty much the exact same. I prefer Sweden tho, stress is way higher in Norway.

Nitpicking but healthcare isn't free, you pay around USD 15 for each visit, and dental care is not included so can be very expensive. I paid around USD 5,000 to get a tooth done. School including Uni is not only free, School lunch is free and you get paid to go to School. I'm not sure but around $200 a month. We don't only have parental leave, we have unlimited amount of sick days and paid vacations of at least a month, and overtime is compensated by at least as much as your ordinary pay, up to twice (ie if you work an hour on a Saturday, you can take two hours off next wednesday.)
What did you have done. When you have paid over 300 dollars you get 50 % off and when you hit 1500 dollars you got 85 % off. So you bill must be for about 40 000 dollars.

U can spend 10 days at hospital and have a surgery, you will only pay like 200USD. That is one big thing we receive for our paid taxes.
In Sweden every time you go see a doctor you pay 25 $ and when reaching 130 $ you don’t pay anything more for the rest of the year - the rule is maximum 130 $ for public health care during 12 months. Same with medication - when you reach 250 $ you don’t pay anything more for your medication for the rest of the year. Staying at a hospital is 12 $ per day. So yes, one doesn’t need to worry about being ill in Sweden and I am so thankful for this - definitively makes it worth paying the taxes!
