This is not the Beating Retreat this is the march back to barracks down the Mall towards Buckingham Palace after the ceremony has taken place. It takes place on the parade ground of Horse Guards There is a video on YT of the whole Beating Retreat

My Dad served with the Royal Marines during WW2 and always stressed that they were all trained Marines who just happened to be able to "play a bit"!! 😉 ... their telling of the story of the Unknown Warrior is very moving ...

The leopard skin is worn only by bass and tenor drummers in all three services. It's to protect the uniform as the rope tensioners were whitened with blanco, which rubs off.

You should watch them do the theme to Gladiator.

The Leopard skin mainly protects the uniform from the drum that is being carried - more so on the far larger bass drums . . . There are usually 2 Officer rehearsals taking place before the Trooping of the Colour even takes place each year - (Major General & Lt Colonel, I think?). They march down to Horseguards from their barracks for the parade, and then they do the parade itself, lastly heading back to barracks lasts around 2 and a half hours on their feet, marching and playing . . . It's not wrong to even say that the RMMB is the best military band in the UK either, more so down to their large drum line at the front - as no other military band has the same amount of them as they do. So, that means that whereas most of the others sound about the same with their limited drummers - the RMMB really stands out when they are performing or marching anywhere as a unit or as a full group.

Most wars fought by Britain in Africa was Britain trying to end slavery against pro-slavery African leaders.
You probably don't believe me, research it. Starting with Thomas Sowell would be a good idea.

To me the leopard skin wearing shows respect to those African tribes that used it in their ceremonial dress. It made me sad to hear you say the things you said. Please do some research by watching YT video as to who put a stop to this particular period in history, years before the US and paid for it (we finished paying in 2015).. I wish you well on your journey with the channel

I think that'll give you a better understanding of what I am aware to. The irish were able to have indentured servitude though which is still differen't from chattel slavery. As far as the FIRST slaves ever though...I don't think we would even truly know because humans been doing it so long.

The leopard skin (or leopard print apron) is used by the bass and tenor drummers to cushion the weight and protect the uniform. I was in a scout band in the 1970s and our bass drummer had one. I think almost all marching bands in Britain use them.

I live in Portsmouth, the home of the Royal Marine School of Music. All musicians must pass the Marines basic training before spending three years full time learning two instruments before being qualified and sent to one of the bands.

I’m not sure why I was so cheered up by watching this, maybe it was the uplifting rhythm of the drums, or blasts of brass, or maybe the sight of so many people marching and playing in perfect synchronicity, all creating such a unified parade of sight, sound, and clockwork precision.
All I know is it made me smile, and ponder the wonders of what can be achieved by us humans if disciplined and devoted to duty.
It’s a world away from my mindset, but I appreciated it nonetheless.
