    Messmer was everything Miquella wanted to be. They both drew people of countless backgrounds to their side. Except Messmer was loved, accepted, and looked upon with great respect by those who knew him best and willingly followed him to what was essentially hell. Miquella brainwashed people to his cause and once that was undone, most returned to their true selves and slaughtered each other. Messmer and Morgott are in my opinion the most nobly tragic of all her children.

      @beniron5807 2 месяца назад +5

      But it highlights the danger of blind faith, does it not? Messmer knew what he was doing was messed up, but he let his faith and desire for acceptance blind him. Just like Morgott and both paid a price worse than death for it.

    Messmer is basically the Itachi of Elden Ring. Also, I think you missed what Messmer said to the Tarnished. He was questioning why his mother made a tarnished a Lord(possibly not knowing her state) yet he was still in exile(meaning he was still loyal to her even though he was without grace but a tarnished was recognized...OVER HIM!?).

    • @MadSki11s
      @MadSki11s 2 месяца назад +2

      While I noticed that he explicitly touched upon that, the "graceless elden lord" roast.
      Still, the line cuts so deep after everything I've been through.
      It's worded so indirect, yet it can't be more direct, it's so vile. 🔥

    • @HeevaEgo
      @HeevaEgo 2 месяца назад +5

      @@MadSki11s I love that aspect of the tarnished. I love how we were only brought back to fix a broken land, but due to our intrinsic relationship with Marika - and how Marika is negatively viewed by basically everyone in the Lands Between for screwing them up in one way or another - it cuts even deeper that we are someone brought back on behalf of Marika, yet everyone hates us for our lite association of her Grace. Like we were the random worthy people Marika trusted, not her people nor even her own children.
      Makes the relationship between the Bosses and the Player character feel much more intimate than prior. Makes us feel “apart of the family” so to speak. Characters and demigods like Godrick, Margit/Morgott, Maliketh, Malenia, Godfrey (especially), Messmer, Miquella, etc all have something of significance to say/understand about the Tarnished based off their preconceived notions about the Role of the tarnished and/or perhaps our relationship with Marika.
      That’s why, despite some boss dialogue like Messmer’s being seemingly non-direct and unbothered by our presence, it feels deeper still purely based on our very existence and place in the World

    • @Bugthaw
      @Bugthaw Месяц назад

      Well the only glaring issue with this interpretation is that you don’t have to actually become Elden lord before fighting him and obviously this dialogue doesn’t change. Might just be an oversight, but still I can’t help but wonder if he is speaking about somebody else. His old timey English makes it hard to decipher.

    Imma dump my head cannon here, Marika's first born was Melina, daugther of Radagon and the Gloam-eyed queen in an attempt to quell a raging conflict and melina doesn't know or just has a suspicion about it, some evidence of this is that she doesn't refer to Marika as her mother to her, Marika and her mother are two different entities and was entrusted to one day find a champion that could conquer the golden order and avenge her mother after she was killed and possibly by Marika to then seal the Rune of death when her attempt to quell the conflict as Radagon failed, a seal of impenetrable thorns was casted on Melina's gloam eye at birth at some point since the scar on her face eerely resembles the incantation.
    And Messmer is Radagon's first born with Marika born out of wedlock, one more reason to scrub him out of history, he was her mother's blight and shame wich may explain why the basest of creatures came to inhabit Messmer's body, he was born out of a selfish base impulse by an imperfect goddess, born out of an avt of blasphemy, impulse that would later shatter the Carian royalty too with Marika's claim over Radagon
    All the Carian Side of the family would get to know messmer at some point but possibly not know his origins wich may explain Radhan's admiration of him and Rykard's infatuation with snake gods and perhaps Ranni and Messmer weren't close at all since there is no mention of her and Messmer interacting at any point, would aslo explain why Rellana is with him, she grew infatuated with him after being introduced formally just to be scrubbed clean out of record with him too.
    Messmer respresented the golden order to perfection, an illustrious child giving it all for his mother just to be betrayed and destroyed by the consequences of his mother's actions, corrupted from his inception thanks to the very goddess he gave everything to.
    Marika is the villain of Elden Ring, so much so she knew herself and brought tarnished warriors from all over the world in an attempt to scrub clean all the mess she created so that there might be a chance, slim as it might be, of a better world, free from the golden order and herself.
    The tarnished claiming the lands between and killing Marika's children is an act of self punishment orquestrated by herself, she not only is the villain but the whole reason you're there in the first place.

    It’s interesting that you can find one of Miquella’s crosses in the Shadow Keep, specifically inside the Specimen Storehouse. This could mean that for whatever reason, Miquella entered the keep and may or may not have interacted with Messmer. Kind of weird how Messmer was just chilling next door as one of his demigod step-siblings is busy ascending to godhood while having someone he was friendly with in the past as his consort. I wonder what Messmer’s thoughts on the matter would be? Would he be surprised, angered, horrified or indifferent if he found out what happened to Radahn?
    On a related note, there appears to be some cut dialogue in Messmer’s opening boss cutscene where he says “Miquella spoke of thee.” which means they did meet, though considering that it’s cut content, its canonicity is dubious at best.

    I'm still thinking that Marika's crusade wasn't as far in the past as a lot of people think. I think Marika made the order after looking farther into the golden order and found out about her pre-jar saint existence. That her secret miracle is "kindness without order" because it marks the moment she has fully rejected the Greater Will's influence. Not that she never had a burning hatred of the omen or the hornsent, but that the specific order to torture and kill every last one came only just before breaking the elden ring. That she promised to return and sealed away the realm to hide the shame what she's commanded. Perhaps she intended to return after the genocide was complete, even if she never intended to let anyone leave that realm ever again. But the real reason she never returned is because she is sealed in the Erd Tree. Since Messmer had plenty of contact with the rest of the family and influence in the upper class, I question if she was ashamed of him specifically or if she could not allow it to be known that one of her children is a symbol of fear and death on her command. She didn't seem to care very much about doing grisly and morally dubious things, but if the rest of the Golden Order knew then her empire might completely erode away under her feet. There were plenty of empyreans that could replace her and they had their own growing factions. It's also possible that coincidently, the seal in Messmer's eye was faltering and that is how so many in his ranks learned of his abyssal nature. Thus she killed 2 birds with 1 stone sealing him away specifically. I'm thinking that other than the period of time between Marika disappearing and us, the crusade is not so old.

    14:50 So I will leave a theory here which I haven't seen anyone consider yet and it goes against your points here.
    The specimen storehouse stores the remnants of the hornsent culture. The giant hornsent corpses being quite noticeable. The stone tablets though have always struck me as odd. I felt like I had seen them somewhere else. I know they must contain information about the hornsent but why store them? The giant corpses can serve as trophies but what will he do with information about their culture? Then it hit me. These stone tablets are the same as the ones in the Queen's Bedchamber. This means that Messmer was sending information about the hornsent culture to Marika. This along with Black Knight Andreas spirit ash description (Though he remained a devout follower of Messmer after his flight from the Erdtree, he would rebel after learning of his liege's serpentine nature.) tells us 2 things. 1) Messmer was going back and forth between the lands between and land of shadows during the early stages of the crusade probably to send the tablets to Marika. 2) Something happened during one of his visits that caused him to flee the Erdtree and has stayed in the shadow realm ever since. Now comes the question why would Marika want to know about the hornsent culture? Well if we assume that the shamans turned jar innards were found before Messmer fled then we have a very solid answer. She was searching their culture in hopes of finding a way to cure the shamans. Marika must have thought they all had died when she had ascended otherwise she would definitely had taken them under her empire to try and heal them as soon as she ascended.
    Heading into speculation territory now. I think what caused Messmer to flee and be forgotten is the base serpent somehow revealing itself to the public in his last visit to Leyndell. The seal Marika gave him must have weakened over time or due to the distance he had from her during to the crusade. We know that the serpentine origin Andreas discovered must have been the base serpent not the winged serpents as they were not only visible at all times on Messmer but the crusade was commemorated with the serpent crest shield which has the winged serpents being depicted on them hence they must have been common knowledge. The base serpent must have been able to show itself somehow to Andreas so its not much of a stretch to say that the same happened when Messmer went back to Leyndell. Due to the serpents being despised in the Erdtree society long befor Messmer's crusade(implied by duelist helm), he was scorned and forgotten by the prople. Anyways, I firmly believe that even after Messmer's flight Marika must have kept contact with Messmer and likely visited him in his keep because the shamans were still lying there in their horrible state and I see zero reason for her to have stopped her attempts at curing them seeing all that she has done to honour their memories via the jar burial practice in the lands between.

    I don't think it has to do anything with being an Elden Lord because the DLC supposedly takes place before we beat Radagon and the Elden beast.. before we mend the runes, so he's just disappointed that his beloved mother graced the tarnished at the end and not him after all his devotion, after he's beaten at his desperate attemp even unleashing the base serpent he realized Marika's true nature.

    9:49 Nope, it worked, it's where the Warrior Jars come from, the wierd fleshy monsters exist because they kept doing the rituals with their own women after all of the Numen were gone. The souls of Shamans make the Jars sentient. There are also regular Warrior Jars in the Gaols. This is a world with magic so while the rituals can continue simply due to tradition like IRL, unlike IRL it's unlikely the ritual would have started if it didn't actually work. This is headcanon but I think it's true because we can't have nice wholesome things in Fromsoft games. Yes, Alexander was created through torture and murder, because of course he was, this is Miyazaki we're talking about. I wish they were just cartoonishly evil and did it for no reason but the fact that the most wholesome character in the game was created this proves it to be a viable (albeit absolutely horrible and cruel) way to rehabilitate criminals, just toss them in a jar with a priestess and you get a massive laborer or footsoldier that never tires and isn't subject to the whims of the flesh and in the case of the warriors gets stronger the longer a fight goes on by incorporating the bodies of your fallen enemies into themselves.

    • @emaciatedFlower

      The great jars you see in the base game have no relation to the hornsent, meaning they aren't created for the hopes of divinity. They are made for rebirths for warriors, a process that no longer happens when we start the game. The roots aren't absorbing the bodies anymore, and great jars were left to wander on their own, where eventually they would be hunted down by perfumers, and they would find places to hide within the lands between

    thanks to your video i can make my head canon make more sense 😹 now, i believe Messmer was manipuated in his later years via a brainwashing technique involving sense deprivation and manipulation.
    i love Messmer lore because that glass shattering when he plucks out that eye prosthesis helped me make sense of the glass shards we find on bodies and occasional drops -
    the shards are green but we see almost no green window glass in the LB, so where does the glass come from?
    i speculate that later Regents or spies (who are **not** Marika but in label) have used eye prosthesis, iris lenses and scent/sounds (per-fume, bells) to program blind beings into warriors who can "sniff" out if someone "has Grace" (an ocular device) and belongs to the pack errr i mean tribe or not.
    IF Marika was Messmer's mommy then i believe he was abducted from her and via some sophisticated cradling prattle told stuff by people imposing as his mother. a flea in his ear.
    But due to the scar he's hiding on his forehead i suspect more likely that he is another jar hexperiment. the snake skin of possibly Eaglay (?) next to casa Bonnyta could be a hint at earlier tests to create snake melts.
