Fond memories of watching my dad tie all these knots as a child. Leter on learning from him once I was old enough to understand and retain the knowledge.

Simple knots with a toggle stick have worked well for years in my experience. And if you don't have a toggle stick the Canadian jam works well too. Very simple as well. Functional cordage is cheap you don't need 550 cord to hang a tarp you can get a pretty decent roll of line from home depot for a few bucks and it will last you years. No one goes camping 26 times a year. And that's what survival and Bush craft is just over glorified camping.
And if you're a hunter you generally already have the lines tied to your tarp because you've been hunting all day, You're tired you wanna eat and you don't want to spend a whole lot of time setting up a tarp when you can just loop it around to stick or a tree and pass a stick through the loop.
