you need a voltage regulator before the arduino to prevent burnout. those things have bad built in regulators that dont meet design spec. especially the cheap ones.
i had this problem with a project and ended up building my own circuit with a really good voltage reg and using the atmega328p you would find in a UNO to make things easier.
you should dump excess power in a battery bank. or have it switch to battery power once its positioned and the battery is charged enough.
the might make it more complicated but reliable.
Also they are charging the batteries just straight from the solar panels but through a diode, that isn’t safe.

It doesn't really do anything? I never seen the actual solar power function work to power the fan. Is it just to change the face of the solar panels? Energy should be regulated and stored to the batteries in order to hook something to the batteries to provide additional functionallity. That would be a real practical use for this project.

Are you really recommending this as a science fair project using what looks like Li-ion batteries? Without even talking about protection or how to properly charge them at all? From what I can see and the limited information you have given those cells might be directly connected to the solar panels.
Also solar panels, depending on their internal layout, may lose a lot of efficiency if even a small part of the panel is covered and yours do overlap.
Also it looks like you forgot to remove the support material from the base.
Edit: I looked at the website and it looks like they are connecting the solar panels to the Li-ion batteries through a diode, no proper charge controller or anything. Those batteries will draw as much current as they can to charge so you won’t even get good efficiency from it and it isn’t safe to charge or use the batteries in this way, probably how you burned yourself and destroyed 3 arduinos. This is not safe and you are marketing this as a science fair project. You clearly do not know what you are doing.

They make buck regulators that you can use, those onboard regulators on the arduinos and clones get pretty hot at 12v
Not to mention charging 18650s through a diode from the solar panels, no charge controller or any kind of protection, the internal protection in the batteries isn’t meant to replace a charge controller, it is there to stop the battery from blowing up.
@@conorstewart2214 ye. This project has too many issues to really be safe. And it's being presented as a science fair project. If some kid builds it and ends up overcharging the batteries, they very well could start a nasty fire.
