Not just a great keyboard player, but genuinely a great bloke. My mate and I were lucky enough to meet him when they were on tour in Canada way back in 1981. We spoke to him before the concert and he said to us to come out back afterwards. How lucky were we to meet him and the rest of the guys and yes that included Hugh. Dave was the most friendly one and we spent about a half an hour chatting to him and having a drink with him. What a great guy and I was devastated to hear of his passing. RIP Dave. You were truly one of the good guys.
So much so Thistle. I met Dave in Canada back in the early 80's. What a great keyboardist.....an even better human being. I'm gutted. Loved this band. Very sad day. My condolences to his family and close friends. May you rest in peace you great person. You'll be missed but never forgotten, by me anyway.
Two live versions of the song I’ve looked at tonight, both missing the iconic keyboard high note. I need to listen to the studio version before I go to bed now. Guitar solo in this was at least on point.
Their voices aren't so far off that Baz sounds out of place though, his voice suits the songs like Cornwell's did, that other singer though... He didn't fit in any way in my opinion in voice or the way he performed
3 OUT OF THE 4 ORIGINALS NOT BAD, CONSIDERING THEY STARTED OUT IN 1975 AS A GARAGE TYPE BAND ALMOST 40 YEARS AGO!! THE ROUNDHOUSE DVD CONCERT IS AMAZING CONSIDERING THEY HAD NOT DONE THOSE TRACKS LIVE IN 30 YEARS!!!
+tommy hill I know that. The guys got serious heart problems & last time I seen them he played only 2 songs before being wheeled off stage with an oxygen mask on. To be fair, the guys 77 now & he has problems travelling too.
It’d be nice to have Hugh back... Just one more time... please Hugh... Baz Warne sure knows how to do it! I wonder how many people are actually on heroine in the crowd lol
To far away from the real stranglers,is missing the voice of Hugh Cornwell. nailed the solo, and looks soo proud well he should be! It's about heroin and also about a girl...
nailed the solo, and looks soo proud well he should be! nailed the solo, and looks soo proud well he should be! It's about heroin and also about a girl...
I, in JPN, think the Stranglers was forgotten with my regret, already so many years ago. But I myself think their song never been rusted even any other person than Hue sings. Of course he was the Stranglers, I know. but nothing can stay as it was. The band must not. I've accepted the latest Stranglers 'cause no variation couldn't be found in whole their history through 35 years.
In many live performances hete on YT as he starts to sing he's putting up his sleeves - know this song is about h, but I wonder is this (I mean sleeves) coincidence or hint
In his book The Stranglers Song By Song, Hugh Cornwell said that "'Golden Brown' works on two levels. It's about heroin and also about a girl. Essentially the lyrics describe how both provided me with pleasurable times." The "girl" in question was Cornwell's Mediterranean girlfriend at the time.
No they did,nt. One left because he thought he was bigger than the band and went on to multi platinum sales and selling out the bowling ally at the dog and duck. The honourable and most gratifying presence that is Jet Black is still an active member of the make up of the band but is now in his eighties and physically can not play. Hugh leaving left a big hole in every bodies heart but some of us get on with life. If they cause you a problem walk away we don,t need your shit view on life we can make up our own minds and get your facts right
Linda Jones jet Black is not in the stranglers anymore he has not made a appearance with them since march 2015 and he will never ever play with them again unfortunately because like you say he's a 80 year old man he can't really do it anymore, Maybe he could play a song on there next studio album tho as baz did say in a interview that he has been writing lyrics for the next album.
+MrCol916.......You're absolutely right of course. (Truth be told, I don't even recall making the comment). All I meant was it wasn't a blatant rip off as in, it IS indeed their own song. The original song was quite an achievement (nearly 35 years ago) so obviously the guys are older, Jet has medical issues and there have been lineup changes. Hugh's absence is immediately evident and I'm not sure if it's just this recording but the vocals sound a bit harsh to me. All posts of the original Studio release have been blocked here so I guess I was surprised to find this at all. I've been a bit out of touch lately (don't dare turn the radio on) and didn't even know they were still playing. I guess if you're still drawing a crowd, that's what matters but I'd love to see the Studio version back, it sounds as lovely as ever and it was a good clip. They are vicious here, blocking even local bands from time to time. Best regards from Australia.
I love Dave's expression in response to the audience's reaction to those opening notes at 0:16 I wonder how many people are actually on heroine in the crowd lol
Bunch of twats complaining that Hugh and Jet aren't there, like Hugh didn't leave the band almost 30 fucking years ago and the last time I saw Jet play live, he managed a whole song before medics had to wheel him off stage. They've been around longer without Hugh than they were, with him. Until my own health issues stopped me a couple of years back, I saw The Stranglers every damn they came round Birmingham way and I have to say, Paul did a good enough job on vocals and Baz has been great. Now, Hugh is as much a part of The Stranglers as Pete Best is a part of The Beatles. Get over it.
Baz Warne The singer has a pretty good voice . Give the guy a break. The chorus at the end is hard to sing without an echo the guys on the mixing desk could have helped out ...
I never noticed until I read a comment on here the other day saying the same thing. I don't think it sounds the same, and if it did Dave Brubeck's management would sue for royalties. Remember the Verve with Bittersweet Symphony, and Colin Hay with Kookaburra?
@@treasurehunteruk9718 i wouldn't didn't go that far. Royalties no... Only said that it reminds me of take5. I meant from the composition analysis point of view. For musics theory lovers
@@YechielCohen Someone else wrote the same thing, and I saw it a few days ago for the first time. It had never occurred to me after hearing it for 38 years. I don't think it sounds the same, and I think the record producers would try to cash in if they thought it was copied.
I love Dave's expression in response to the audience's reaction to those opening notes at 0:16
That and the little mistake he makes right before that. Happy little mistake ;)
RIP Dave Greenfield. Respect.
Best composer in our century. RIP Dave Grenfield. Lest all fell fortunate for its music. And salute his legacy on every toast. For Dave.
what a musician. I love his smile at the start when the audience recognizes his song

Such a brave song. To think you could carry the entire thing on the organ chords. Genius
Such a technically tricky song as well. Such a great flow though.
Ever heard Whiter Shade of Pale?
Merci Dave pour ces magnifiques notes pour ce sourire radieux repose en paix merci merci
A timeless classic that stirs the soul, loved it in the 80's and love it now....
This song is immortal

I lent this guy - Baz my Gibson L6S once at Pete's practice place in Sunderland. Very nice guy known him a long time.
Re: Golden Brown,Down in the Sawer,Walk on By,etc, toujours un solo du regretté Dave G.Merci de m avoir mis des sons dans ma vie.

Dwight Whikehart Only 2 here, unless Jet Black has lost about 5 stones & about 35 years?

Well performed. Greetings from Bavaria germany
Saw them at Bradford University students union. 1977/78 the crowd was 50 people .stage was a foot high. They would go to the bar mid playing.
💜
Genius ❤

@ Paul claridge......This is not a cover! The Stranglers have aged like the rest of us.

Fucking hell did they even plug jjs mic on I can't even hear him.
I wonder how many people are actually on heroine in the crowd lol
Not the same without Hugh Cromwell, he was the band.
they don't make'm like this anymore
Jesus Jet Black has he's aged well you would not believe he's in his 80s

at least they tried too carry it on
2:15 :)
That's not Jet Black on the drums
Jet Black can only manage 3 or 4 songs a set these days. He's 76!
