Sophisticated 70s Icon Wrote SILLY Song on a DARE…Became His ONLY HIT! | Professor of Rock

  • Warren Zevon was told by one of the founding fathers of rock, Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers that he should write a novelty song about a horror movie icon… So he wrote a total joke song…One he called a piece of crap called the Werewolves of London... It became his only hit! It’s a song about a mysterious, sophisticated gent who could be seen dining at Chinese restaurants, and drinking Pina Coladas in posh areas of Soho & Kent. He’s a dapper fellow, with tailored suits, and perfectly coiffed hair. But don’t let appearances fool you….Despite his dashing looks, you better keep your distance... cause he’ll rip your lungs out. The truth behind this ‘hairy handed’ bottled lightning hit, and the tortured artist who released the cap- then “drew blood" is NEXT... on Professor of Rock.”

Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. If you remember the push button radios from the cab of a pickup you’ll dig this channel of musical nostalgia Make sure to, subscribe below right now. you will dig this channel. We also have a patreon you'll want to check out. It helps us keep it a daily channel and we bring you in as an honorary producer on each episode.
It’s time for another edition of our series Bottled Lightening where we celebrate a song or album that was king for a day…Here we honor artists and bands and that rocketed up the charts… but for reasons unknown weren’t able to sustain that success. Called by some ‘one-hit wonders’, we celebrate them instead as lightning in a bottle.
The story of Warren Zevon is, in many ways, an archetypical account of an immensely talented, but tortured, rock star. Like many before, and after him, he was somehow convinced that genius followed the road of excess. In his own words, he lived the life of Jim Morrison, but, for some reason…he lived 29 years longer. Zevon was beloved by his peers, a collection of the best artists of the so-called, Troubadour Era of the early to mid-70s. He was a highly sought-after session player for many years before the great Phil Everly convinced him to write a song about werewolves, fashioned after the “Monster Mash,” and the result was a 'bottled lightning’ track that became his only pop hit.
Warren Zevon’s childhood resembled episodes of The Sopranos…During his formative years, Warren’s father, William Zevon, worked as a bookie who managed volume bets and dice games for the scandalous LA mobster Mickey Cohen.
The Cohen crime family gave him the nickname “Stumpy” Zevon, and he was even the best man at Mickey Cohen’s first wedding…
As far back as Warren can remember, “Stumpy” drifted in & out of his son’s life, often making a ruckus when he reappeared. Like the time when Warren was 9, and his bookie father showed up to give his son a piano that he had won during a poker game. Warren was thrilled with his father’s gift, but his Mom was none too pleased and promptly ordered her erratic husband to remove the piano immediately. Stumpy responded by hurling a kitchen knife- narrowly missing his Mom’s head, then stomped out of the house. Warren got to keep the piano…..

I heard a story on the radio where a young woman and her father used to argue often on whether this was a good song or not. The father loved it and the daughter despised it. On her wedding day she had found the perfect song for her Father/daughter dance and changed it last minute to Werewolves of London. When her father heard the song start he burst into tears. I found it so moving and so selfless that this young lady gave this “win” in honor of her father. I think of this sweet story every time I hear this song.

For me, "Lawyers, Guns and Money" or "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" are at the top of his extensive list of great songs. He had a knack for capturing the sort of griminess of unsavory, sketchy characters but was able to mitigate the bleakness with a sardonic humor. And "Excitable Boy" is kind of a wild ride about what happens when you make excuses for a child's inexcusable behavior, something that, as a parent and grandfather, is always on my mind.

My favourute Zevon is his penultimate album, My Ride's Here, which has a number of songs about his cancer
It always reminded me of my stepfather, who had died of cancer some years before this album, with the dark humour and acceptance of his fate.
My stepdad had been told there was absolutely nothing they could do but they asked if he was willing to try an experimental technique that could, at most, buy him a month or two but would help in the future
Even though he was in perennial pain, suffered from deilitating headaches and seizures, he volunteered. It was rough on him, causing him extreme nausea. But he perservered, knowing that, while he would not see any results, at some point in the future his actions would help someone else fight, and even beat, cancer
My stepdad, an ordinary man, a truck driver by trade, proved he could be a hero
It is said that that a society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit.
RIP, Bram. You were a good man. Enjoy a beer in the shade you helped set up

water head babies in the 40s.
Her parents agreed to some experimental surgeries when he was 2. Sadly he died at age 3 and they donated Kenneth to science. My grandad told me the story of him when I was 14 and was proud of the gift that was their son so other kids could survive. Today it's a simple shunt surgery to cure this malady.

It is the bain of being a musician that your career is dependent on the tastes, the mood of the public. I had never thought of it until you did this ... Werewolves was Warren's only hit?!?! In 5 seconds I thought of Poor Poor Pitiful Me, Roland ...., Lawyers ...; his life and fame and respect from peers reminds me of Townes van Zandt. Perhaps Bob Seger said it best about music when asked in early 80s how it felt to be an overnight success ... and he replied that he'd worked really hard for 10 years to be an overnight success ... applies to so many.

When I was diagnosed with cancer in January of 2020, it was purely surrealistic, especially the 25-mile drive home with my wife. We didn't talk much, except for the expected, "we'll beat this" type stuff.
Walking into the house, I said, "I need some me time," and went straight to my home office, pulled up Warren Zevon on my Amazon Music's playlist. About 10 songs in "My Shits F**k'd Up" plays, followed by "Life Will Kill You" and then, "She's to Good for Me."
It was as if a light bulb exploded in my head. Quickly, pulled up the VH1 documentary of The Making of The Wish. Watched it twice.
Walked into the living room, took the remote, pulled up RUclips on the big screen to the documentary, looked at my wife and asked, "Watch this with me?""
When it was over, I said (scripted in my office), "If I can muster up 2% of the courage he had those months making this album, I, no we really do got this."
We hugged, no tears, and talked in depth about what our options were. Decided together that moment which treatment option we wanted.
I immersed myself in music pretty much every waking minute through all the anxiety, worry, depression, radiation fatigue, good days, and bad.
I am cancer free, 16 months now. Artists entire catalogs, like Warren Zevon, Phil Ochs, John Lennon, George Harrison, Grand Funk Railroad (my first concert at 12), Deep Purple, Blackmore's Night (Ritchie Blackmore and wife), Dr. John, Leone Russell, Pete Seeger, Arlo and Woody, and the Grateful Dead.
Albums like Jefferson Airplane's "Surrealistic Pillow" album. Fever Tree's self titled first album. Janis' "Pearl". Willie Nelson's "Red Headed Stranger".
The beauty of RUclips I discovered new artists or new to me and rediscovered old favorites. The Rainbow Girls, Larkin Poe, the entire acapella genre, my love of folk and folk rock in Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Peter, Paul, and Mary, and Joni Mitchell.
But, I always came back to Warren Zevon when I needed it most.

A few of my thoughts on Warren.
His albums used to be on steady rotation among my circle of friends in the late 70's / early 80's. Back when you read every word of the liner notes, and we would play anything and everything that came out from what we called the Asylum mafia.
I only saw him perform live once. He played the Calgary Folk Festival main stage in 2002, was supposed to stay for Sunday side stage performances but left early. He had not been well, and it was on his return to LA that he found out how bad things were. Ya just had a feeling that something was not right.
The in studio videos during the recording of The Wind are a joy to watch. You can see and feel the love and respect the other musicians have for Warren. He has a huge smile on his face while they are recording Disorder in the House.
Lots of really good covers of this songs. Of course Linda Ronstadt's cover of Poor Poor Pitiful Me is well known. His songs have been covered by a few artists here north of the border - Terri Clark also does a good version.
The first recorded version of Carmelita was by singer songwriter Murray McLauchlan, an artist who has kind of been forgotten today but has some great songs himself. I still remember seeing Murray do Carmelita in concert around the time that Werewolves was hitting it big. Murray used to joke about how they had traded songs, but Warren hadn't recorded his yet.
    Sorry Warren wasn't around longer.

.....y'know, I always thought "Zev" wrote the tune because he was in the midst of the crossover from Soft / Yacht Rock to New Wave in '78, and he was more of a 'Randy Newman' type......Oh well, ya learn sumpthin' new....and, I ALWAYS do, from *PROF.!* .....Gotta split AGAIN, Thanks! ; )

1978 is one of my favorite years in music and this list of songs is proof why. So many great songs from 21-30 shows the diverse quality in the music.

@@stephenhanft1226 Little Feat's "Waiting For Columbus" Live album was and is a classic favorite too from 1978.

I haven't heard everything he ever did, but "Splendid Isolation" is one of my favorite all timers.

There is a lot of this in Rock. A silly song done for kicks or a dare becomes a greatest hit for the artist(s). What the artists who give the song no credence fail to understand is that their exuberance and raw unrehearsed playing of the song evokes a sense of joy and freedom in the listener, as they are caught up in the rhythm. The silly lyrics help them detach from the worry and angst of the day as well. In the end, isn't that what the best music is supposed to do?

If you listen carefully you’ll notice the “Werewolves Of London’s” main chord progression closely resembles those of “Sweet Home Alabama”
I first noticed the similarity when I heard “Kid Rock’s” tune.

I always thought the song a takeoff of Bertold Brecht’s opener for his Three Penny Opera, Mack The Knife. Obviously not in Bobby Darrin’s Jazz rhythm, but in the original (assuming that you ever caught it in PBS Pledge Drive).

1978? Wow! I graduated in 80 and I would've sworn this song has been out since the early 70's. So many groups/people labeled poorly because they didn't have "hits".

Love this song!!! lol It was cheesy, but a lot of fun. We used to listen to it on the way to the midnight movie showings of Rocky Horror Picture Show. I had it on cassette (yes, I kept a pencil in my car) and before my friends got in the car with me I'd have the cassette queued up to the spot where the song would start playing right away. I lost count how many times we saw RHPS.

Great stories. What is wild is his dichotomy of spirit. On one hand he was the Excitable Boy, raising Cain and so self destructive. On the other hand he must have been a great guy, and so talented, because in spite of himself, the luminaries of Rock loved him and stood by him. The label of lightning in a bottle fits him perfectly, more than most.
