Thank you very much. It has really come to life! And I hear ya that it's only just the wood for right now too! It's fun to look over everything on the layout. Helps to have some guys that dabble in construction!
LOL Thanks Vinny, We have a club flea market on March 2nd along with an open house for the club. Our goal is to have all 3 tracks running to support trains for the open house. We ordered the wire and have been soldering feeder wires to each 3' section of track in the meantime. We have 8 week! LOL
Thanks Kev, We have a GREAT group of guys that have a nice wide range of skills. It's fun to have other people teach and learn new tricks too. We have all been waiting patiently to get this going and now it's time for it to come to life!!
Thank you very much. The spline roadbed was used by a few of our members on home layouts and it has been a great substructure to hold the track. The pre planning helped out a ton before we even laid one piece of wood. I will be posting more videos on some of the construction techniques we used for the layout too. Thanks again
I've seen some large layouts being built on RUclips but this is the largest,I will look forward to seeing scenery added to the model has its going to be a very big job but I'm sure will look amazing. Some excellent carpentry skills there too. Kev.
bnsf, I haven't seen the entire series, but concur with some of the other comments about construction techniques and decisions. For example why some yards use spline and others are blended into flat Homasote surfaces. How are 90 degree crossings attached. How are spline ends anchored on the main line (i.e. where a bridge is to be inserted). Why are flyovers sometimes accomplished with 1/2" ply(?) and how is the spine attached there, etc. Thanks for taking the time to record this build!
LOL, We only have 5000 feet! LOL. I wish we had that line set for the layout, but it didn't make the cut. I will be posting a video with more in depth town locations and track diagrams for each town. We actually finished the North Star Shops in Big Lake last night. And oh yes the North Star will be servicing the downtown are to Target Field. Beyond that it will continue to the Monticello Sub which will be a dead ended branchline along the North wall of the building.
arthur, I have no connection with this fantastic layout, but have started building my own layout using spline (inspired by another Minnesotan named Jeff Otto). I have not had to smooth the Homasote; I've cut it with both 40 and 60 tooth 7 1/4" blades and both leave a finish that doesn't need any more work. The 60 tooth is downright exceptional. Not even any fuzz.
Will look forward to seeing the progress with the scenery mate. I've done scenery videos on my layout Amberton on sea a bit English I know. My layout will feature in a model magazine here in the UK in the near future(Model Rail) its quite a popular magazine. Kev.
Wheres Maple Lake, Buffalo and Annadale or any of the other towns down highway 55 following the CP mainline lol. nice work i woud love to see a model of the northstar in from Big lake going into the cities if you guys also think that would look cool
you guys are making great progress. i started watching when all you had was the track plan on paper....thanks for sharing....i would like to see a train running by feb 1st...lol vinny..aka..bnsf6951
Fantastic layout, unfortunately the filming is terrible. Dont' walk while filming. Hold the camera still get the shot ., pause it , move to the next location , steady the camera , turn it on ..etc..

Thank you! The planning really helped speed up the process, it allowed us to move along quite rapidly on the benchwork.
Looks amazing, hats off to you and your club members! Look forward to the next update and thank you for sharing!
This is going to be one great layout, can't wait to see more videos. To all involved great work.

I think there is a smudge on the lens of the camera.
Is there a video that you did that shows the spine construction?
How did you attach the homosote roadbed to the risers?
Hey can I become a member of your MN club if I live in NC? LOL
