Driving to 0% in the Tesla Model 3 Highland LR - efficiency, range and charging time tested!

  • It’s another day on the road and another chance to see what the New Tesla Model 3 refresh “Highland” Long Range Dual Motor can do!
    Real-world efficiency and capable range in cold weather conditions (I start the day in 4c only with NO preheating!) .
    Then I drive it to 0% so I can see how fast it charges. As it was driven to such a low state of battery it means no preconditioning which actually means it will charge slower than its capable of in some conditions.
    We can then calculate how long it would take the car to recharge if covering longer distances. Take for example a 500 mile trip which is the length of the UK, more than Edinburgh to London and about the same as Calais to Geneva. The model 3 can do this distance with just one charge of under 30 minutes, potentially only 20 minutes. Now that isn’t bad is it… you need that to stop and rest and have a coffee and lunch anyway!

      Therefore has a vested interest in promoting milk floats. I wonder if that Tesla has been paid for via the limited company that runs the dealership to benefit from the various tax benefits and avoid the horrific depreciation occurring on milk floats at present… just curious.

    Hi Richard, apologies but I'm not sure about your maths on the range/price. The cost you quoted for the fast charge ie ?100kWh is reasonable at @34p per kWh, ditto @7p for home charging hence the significant advantage (as ever) for home charging. My beef is that my home charger would expire if asked to pump in 100kWh per hour- as for most people it is 7.2kWh/hr and my o/n tariff is for 4 hours only. So I agree if the o/n tariff lasted for 24h but that ain't the case. I adore what they have done to update the M3 but the lack of indicator/lights would put me off- I passed my test in 1977 so habits are rather ingrained. Keep up these videos- and I have no idea where you find the time whilst running a successful business.

    I wonder how much weight affects the range and performance (0-100 and 100-0). I cannot seem to find anyone testing EVs with near maximum load, usually always just a single reviewer in the car.
    It actually matters for us as we are a family of 5 and with vacation packing it could be pretty close the load cars are approved for.

    • @rogerstarkey5390
      @rogerstarkey5390 3 месяца назад +2

      Richard ran a large part of his previous test "3 up"....
      .
      Logically, weight is "momentum" / "potential energy" once at speed, so an EV will recover more when regenerative braking with a load.
      Less impact than with ICE.

    • @pauld3327
      @pauld3327 3 месяца назад +3

      Weight has very minimal impact on range at steady speed.

    • @ProXcaliber
      @ProXcaliber 3 месяца назад +1

      I thought the same thing at one point, but it turns out weight doesn't affect range once you're already going, and it's actually better for slowing down or stopping since more goes into the battery with regen.

      How often do you need to go from near empty to full? Once or twice a year maybe (zero for me with 10,500 miles in 2023) . So, on those infrequent occasions pay the extra £20 and charge for 8 hours its still cheaper than petrol. And of course if you dont, then two nights is fine.

      Hi, you need to research overnight charge rates, they do vary. On 'Economy Seven' you get seven hours at a reduced rate but EDF have just raised that from around £0.08/kWh to £0.16/kWh, still considerably cheaper than the daytime rate though. With a 7 kW charge connection you could put in 49 kWh in the seven hours overnight giving a daily range approaching 200 miles at 4 miles/kWh. It would cost £7.84 per overnight charge ......

      Hi, me again, about insurance. Sadly the cost is going up for all motor vehicles. Have a look at Range Rover quotes for a real shock. It's not just down to the vehicle model though. You do need to research using your particular details - quotes are very individual.
