      Caleb Harris Yup, you know me so well to make that assumption.
      Making money is different that profit. He's dumping all the money back in, yet still doesn't have enough to ship intended levels of model 3's. Also no profit to show his investors on top of it. An estimate for Nov. estimates 240 model 3s shipped. Why do you think they came out with the new roadster and truck hype train? He needs money to fund the model 3's. What hype train will he use to fund the roadster and truck when the time comes.
      Now commence with your personal insults since that is all you have.

      Caddy Guy Gaming
      Making a profit is crucial and not about to happen, *however* Amazon (and others) has done quite well in the last two decades by re-investing almost every dime in growth, barely any profit. Had you put a measly $10k on AMZN in 1997 and let it run till today you'd have close to $8M. Not likely Tesla can do that but SOME smart money is betting they will be worth 20X more than today in ten yr.s.

      Hyperloop concept is old, Musk practically only named it and made concept more known, it essentially Maglev train in the low pressure tube, Maglev train is not new there already commercial lines..... but on entire world you can count those lines on your finger, because it's hell lot of expensive and doing this in tube and maintaining all the challenges of that is even more expensive. So who even tell you that we gonna have Hyperloop in few years and it gonna revolutionize transport he is BSing you, Maglev is here and it didn't kill long distance trains.

    • @noctusowl
      @noctusowl 5 лет назад

      They all were and still are very expensive. Might blow your mind but most people in the world do now own a car. Much fewer actually fly and investment in space projects dropped substantially since the end of the Cold War every year and most projects have been postponed or abandoned. Because many of us benefited from it does not invalidate the criticism those technologies received because for most humans those technologies are not in reach.

      " automotive, airplanes, space travel" - well the first two have worked (no-one is using space for "travel" though), but many many more engineering projects have failed too, including earier versions of the Hyperoop - it is not a new idea. Any project needs to be weighed up, and Hyperoop won't succeed even with the best-taking salesman of the 21st century (Musk) is hyping it up.

Without a vacuum, this hyperloop cannot function and will require a long time of not operating to locate the where the air is coming from and be expensive and difficult to repair.

    • @ericcartmann
      @ericcartmann 7 лет назад +3

      Hyperloop is an insane engineering problem.
      Vibrations. The speed of the car goes so fast it may resonate the tube. Earthquakes could decimate the tube. Current engineering methods would be to utilize a mass damper system. Because this would have thousands of mass damper systems, this would be almost impossible to do the analysis on. We'll need to develop new forms of analysis for hyperloop for extremely high order differential equations.
      Thermal expansion. The length of the tube will deviate a hundreds of meters at the proposed distance. Current engineering methods have mechanical "expansion joints" that physically slide in and out. For oil&gas they add uppercase omega looking "kinks" into the line. Neither of these engineering methods are practical for hyperloop.
      Warping. The sun will heat up the top of the pipe, and the bottom will remain cold. This will cause the pipe to curve since the top expands. Current methods utilize expensive shiny reflective pipe that is relatively short distance. Long distance pipe is put underground to remove this problem. Neither of these two engineering solutions are suitable for hyperloop.
      Risk of Decompression. If a hole in the pipe occurs, this could compromise the structural integrity of the whole pipe and cause it to collapse onto itself. Also the car could receive structural damage from running into air resistance going 1000km/h. Oil Pipelines are have extremely high "positive" pressure so they couldn't collapse onto themselves. Airplanes also have "positive" pressure. The only engineering method to deal with negative pressure would be to add structural supports. Adding structural supports is not possible with hyperloop, or the tube would be blocked.
      Corrosion. Corrosion causes pipelines to leak all the time. Billions of dollars are investing into corrosion engineering to "mitigate" or "slow" corrosion. Corrosion is never 100% eliminated. The current method of hyperloop construction is to have concrete set onto the bottom of the tube. This would cause a lot of corrosion on the inside of the tube as the concrete sets. Currently there's no engineering method available to completely remove corrosion.
      Keeping the tube straight - You literally need it go through mountains. You need the tube to be straight, otherwise riders would see large accelerations. Current methods with roads/railways involve just "curving" the road around the mountains. Going 80km/h is fine for these curves. Going 1000km/h is not.
      The hyperloop as is, is not ready for the engineering demand. Still 50+ years away from getting what has been teased.

This would be both cheaper and safer using the current level of technology that we have. they could just build it over the middle of the existing highway system. Even a 300mph maglev train would be an improvement for commuting between NY and DC or up the West Coast.

    It's a great tech contest that will ultimately lead to no viable product. But if that's ok with investors, then fine... it'll be much like other DARPA challenge projects.
    Reality of it is though, that if people really wanted a fast transportation method without many of Hyperloop barriers, lower infrastructure costs, and several advantages like being able to put multiple "cars" on regular intervals and make several stops along the way... MagLev trains already exist and are operational. There is no need to reinvent the wheel. It'll be theoretically slower, but MagLev trains already operate at speeds that border the limits of security and comfort, but that's the only real disadvantage. On the counterpart there are multiple advantages - proven technology, no need to build near vacuum tubes, can deal with "cars" of different shapes and sizes, can work with routes with multiple stop points, it has the way more familiar shape and usability similar to trains, etc etc.
    The question then becomes, how valuable is the tech potentially being developed in these competitions are as a whole - not only potential development, but also for stuff like education, parallel applications, and whatnot. As far as I've seen, the leading companies (like Hyperloop One) are replicating MagLev technology basically. Their initial beta test of propulsion is something MagLev trains already did decades ago. Whatever is being produced for vacuum tubes does not translate well for the final product because the more area a tube has to implement near vacuum, the more complex it becomes.
    Imagine someone putting his/her money on development of a flying car instead of just buying a regular car because he/she expects to be flying over traffic jams in a few decades. Is that sound reasoning? That's up for each one to decide.
    It becomes a problem though when money put on this is public money, and it sacrifices current investment in much needed traditional infrastructure in favor of some far fetched utopic vision.
    It's fine while the companies trying to develop it are all privately funded, and up until sometime ago that was the case. The initial prototype tests and some of the competition is all privately funded. Private money with interests in patents and other development, it's their own money to invest.
    But recently, there have been a whole ton of talks about governments (India, UAE, Netherlands, Sweden) pitching to get a track. There's money being invested for the company to study feasibility of installing a non-existing track for a non-existing technology that might or might not happen in the future by governmental transportation agencies in some countries.
    This is where things get sketchy. Some countries might agree to invest some money in something like these as they have spare money to waste, but I don't want my country and I don't think it's fair for the citizens of some countries to burn public money on this when they don't even invest enough to fix current infrastructure that is in dire need of repairs and rebuilding.

      Wow have you seen what elon musk companies have achieved ? To say that this technology will not be viable is pretty stupid if u dont have any data supporting them.
      Many people told the same about reusable rockets , electric card but see how much progress has been made now.
      These type of competition inspire people to create better transportation tech so even if hyperloop doesnot succeed the tech will be used somewhere or new tech can be created by learning from this.
      As far as govt money the govt spends the money in old transportation anyway so its good there is atleast some interest from govt to invest in new technology .

The more you push boundaries the less will have access to it. These technologies are viable but just to connect a few megalopolis in very wealthy nations. Calgary to Fort Macmurray in Alberta would be a perfect installation of a below ground high-speed bi-directional Hyperloop with stops in Red Deer, Edmonton and possibly options for other regional stops along the way, side tracks will ensure that the flow of traffic is unencumbered with loading and unloading along with 2 parallel tracks to serve as an emergency escape in the event of a problem. I would hope considerations would also be made to transport vehicles safely on this loop as well as human cargo perhaps in various sized personal pods that operate without a schedule and are autonomous along with scheduled semi-autonomous person movers on fixed routes. Someday connecting Canada East to West and south to our brothers and sisters we are so fond of bringing people together efficiently and safely making the world just a little bit smaller.

  • @bobd.
    @bobd. 3 года назад

    Not new technology, but applying it to transport people is new, at least as far as acutally building it. Pneumatic tube systems have been used for decades, you've probably even used one without realizing it. Though not as common as it once was drive-in banking made use of pneumatic tube systems to move your check and deposit slip in to the teller and they sent your receipt and/or cash back out to you using one of these systems. Exact same principle just on a smaller scale.
    Larger systems than those used at banks have been installed (I helped build and test some of them) with payloads of 20 pounds or more. There was a casino in Atlantic City (closed long ago) that used a pneumatic tube system to move money and chips around and it was fast and secure. Hospitals use them to speed off samples to their lab when a trauma case comes into the ER. Applying this to moving people requires another level of redundant control systems to accomodate the needs of the cargo; in this case living, breathing people; and get them from A to B safely.
    So this is not a hoax or pipe dream, it WILL happen. Just needs to develop slowly and build up some operating expierence before it's deployed on a large scale. Then you have the other hurdle of resistance from the trucking industry and the railroads because this will put them out of business except trucks for last mile delivery.

      As of 2020, "Billionaire's pipedream" is an unbiased way to describe Hyperloop. Nobody can yet tell whether is feasible to use it for human transport, as the technical issues and dangers surrounding it are all yet to be solved. Only after we can ensure to keep a vacuum inside a metallic infrastructure long several hundreds of km and exposed to thermal dilatation, we'll have a grasp on its feasibility.

    Mass Transit systems are like Trains and Subways have long platforms and a large number of doors that allow thousands of people to be loaded and unloaded in seconds. How is this possible if you need to seal an air lock and then evacuate/pressurize it at each station. Can you build an air lock that is as long as a train station platform?
    The infrastructure at each station seems huge - airlocks, pumps - compared to a train station, which is just a platform and some bathrooms.
    Traveling at that speed at ground level, means that the entire length of the track needs to be secured against sabotage and terrorism ( vs airlines, which only need to secure the airport). Also the security at the station needs to be comparable to that of an airport, since any explosion means certain death to everybody traveling on the train ( and potentially anybody in other trains in the tube because the tube will experience sudden pressurization )
    Could somebody from the Hyperloop project answer, if possible. I'm wondering how this can be a practical mass transit system. It may be a successful prestige project in a few cities.

      Stan Ford. Cut it out you're killin' me. It's not his idea nor his invention he's merely trying to inspire us. This can work but at face value ,no. Oh, hell no. Way way, way too expensive per mile. But we're not interested in that right now. We need to know, is the concept doable? He's doing something... That's what matters. If it's a total failure then at least he tried. You have got to try. There's no forward momentum without that initial push. Lead follow or get outta the way. No disrespect. Let the man do his thing. There is a lot to learn from doing and succeeding also in failure. You CANNOT be afraid of failure. How many filaments did Edison try before using carbon ? Hundreds? Thousands?

    • @stanford4063
      @stanford4063 7 лет назад

      Thommy Two Toes Times Three Thomas Edison promoted DC power for the grid. It didn't work. Sometimes ideas just don't work. It's clear that using current available materials, this cannot be done in the real world. That's why Elon isn't bothering using his time, energy and resources for it but he has handed it over to others. He knows it's currently pointless but rather than just give up, he has passed it to others. Some things really are actually a waste of time. Maybe this won't be, maybe it will. But what if he had spent that time working on flying vehicles which could be made using new glass electrolite lithium cells which do not deteriorate and can be recharged in less time than it takes for a passenger to alight and another to get in. Travel within cities could be much faster. Outside of cities it has potential to do well too.
      Why focus on something which thunderf00t has thoroughly debunked? Seems a waste of time to me

    • @thommytwotoestimesthree847
      @thommytwotoestimesthree847 7 лет назад

      Stan Ford. You could ver well be right. I do, however, believe he's on the right track. Please, if would be so kind, to read my seven or eight other posts in this section. It's something i find fascinating and it's been a dream of mine since the early eighties to develop something similar but not using vacuum. To me that's silly and wasteful. The only thing stopping me was cash. I was short about 9,999,000$.

    • @thommytwotoestimesthree847
      @thommytwotoestimesthree847 7 лет назад

      Stan Ford. It'll work. Not in it's current state of design though. As long as the road surface or track are designed in unison. Where we've been missing the boat is in track construction. The road needs to be designed along the same parameters as the carriage which rides upon it. Everyone is perhaps misled by all the hype of 700 mph. Forget that nonsense. 150 to 170 is fast i don't care what anyone says. Work with doable numbers first then expand on that is what I say. The problem encountered with the higher speeds is when things go wrong they go horribly wrong
      Whats wrong with 100 or 200 mph? With 99.99% percent safety factor i'll take it. The world needs this to happen. I seriously doubt this hyper loop is the answer though,but the knowledge gained through trial and error should prove well worth the effort provided the money comes from donors outside the taxpayer domain. When a workable model is found I'm certain the public would support it. Before a system can be developed it first needs to be visualized. After that...how practical is it? E.g. does it require compounds or materials that haven't been developed or discovered yet?

    • @thommytwotoestimesthree847
      @thommytwotoestimesthree847 7 лет назад

      Stan Ford. It's simply a cool concept. Whether you like the guy ( musk) or hate him you still get to use his hard won victories. That's what I like. The main problem i see is in cornering or any slight variations in altitude. Going over a bump or slight grade at high speed is bone shaking to say the least. Perfectly aligned straightaways are an absolute must at high speed. Aircraft enjoy few turns, and fewer bumps.Any movement sideways or up/down need gradual degrees of change at the higher speeds.
