- Every songwriter dreams to have a song of theirs take on a life of its own. I feel so fortunate to have been able to write such a song back in 2007 in my first ever Christmas song, “How Many Kings.” I remember vividly the first time my band performed “HMK” at a venue in Florida. After the show, a man approached me excitedly, saying this song was going to reach a lot of people, and cause them to marvel about Christmas is a new way. Sure enough, here we are, 13 years later, and a song I wrote in about 3 hours one afternoon in my bedroom in Franklin, Tennessee, is still finding new life among people all over the world.
This is my first experience recording one of my songs in another language. If you know my background, you’d expect that to be French! Yet, it was pretty amazing to get to sing my own lyrics in Spanish, a language I’ve become more familiar with over recent years, having toured Mexico multiple times. We had a talented translator interpret the lyric in a way that not only captured the message, but its poetic meter and imagery as well; no simple task. Afterwards, a Spanish singer recorded herself singing it, so that I could be sure my pronunciation was as accurate as my less-than-basic grasp of the language could muster. I hope my diction passes the test, and allows what I originally wrote over a dozen years ago to shine through, and that “How Many Kings” finds a new, cozy spot on the holiday playlists of the Spanish-speaking world for years to come! That would be muy bien.

Todo compositor sueña con que una canción suya cobre vida propia. Me siento muy afortunado de haber podido escribir una canción así en 2007 en mi primera canción navideña, "How Many Kings". Sin embargo, fue bastante sorprendente poder cantar mis propias letras en español, un idioma con el que me he familiarizado en los últimos años, después de haber realizado giras por México varias veces. Tuvimos un traductor talentoso que interpretó la letra de una manera que no solo capturó el mensaje, sino también su métrica poética y sus imágenes; no es una tarea sencilla. Posteriormente, una cantante española se grabó a sí misma cantándola, para que yo pudiera estar seguro de que mi pronunciación era tan precisa como podía lograr mi comprensión básica del idioma. Espero que mi dicción pase la prueba y permita que lo que escribí originalmente hace más de una docena de años brille, y que "How Many Kings" encuentre un lugar nuevo y acogedor en las listas de reproducción navideñas del mundo de habla hispana en los próximos años. ! Eso sería very good.

This was one of the most Powerful songs I'd ever heard when I first learned of it back in the 90's an English version by a great band called "Downhere." Now dubbed in Spanish. Fantástico! It makes me happy to know Freddie enjoyed Gospel music/ the voice of Aretha Franklin. I believe he found solace listening to the power of the message and her powerful voice, which inspired him to write his favorite song "Somebody To Love" 🎵🎶 Fantástico!
