An Interview with Vinny Raniolo

- Опубликовано: 2 сен 2016
- Vinny Raniolo is best known for his accompanying skills and is a very high demand rhythm guitarist. His dynamic playing has brought him to 14 countries on three continents - and still growing - having performed in some of the world’s most illustrious venues, including the Sydney Opera House in Australia, The Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, New York’s Lincoln Center and the world’s oldest indoor concert hall, Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, Italy.
While keeping a busy touring schedule in a variety of musical settings, Vinny has also become a familiar figure on Public Television. Featured previously on three popular shows, including the heavily programmed Tommy Emmanuel and Friends, in Frank Vignola's Four Generations of Guitar as the youngest generation in the lineage of jazz guitarists with veteran Bucky Pizzarelli and in the Music Gone Public series. Recording credits include soundtracks for HBO's Boardwalk Empire and Woody Allen's film Café Society.
“When Frank Vignola was asked to put together a team for what will hopefully be the first of a long run of guitar nights at New York’s Cutting Room, he called ‘all of the Italian guitar players I could get,’ he said with a wink at the club... These weren’t just any “Italian guitar players” though. First, there was Vinny Raniolo, Vignola’s longtime musical partner. The two of them together are a force of nature: superior, simpatico, entertaining players with a wide-ranging repertoire and off-the-charts facility.” - JazzTimes
“Vignola and Raniolo’s dual acoustic guitars blend like espresso and gelato. From the first notes of “It Might As Well Be Spring,” the players leap with acrobatic precision from strummed triplets to descending diminished scale runs. On mellower takes Vignola and Ran¬iolo recall the frisky interplay of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli.” - The Christian Century

As the teacher at the Long Island High School for the Arts that played the Joe Pass, Herb Ellis, & John Pizzarelli CD's for Vinny that inspired him, I couldn't be prouder of the musician he turned into.
It's always a thrill for a teacher/mentor to see students go on to be successful. I'm proud to now call Vinny a dear friend and we've had the chance to perform together a few times
since he graduated high school. I look forward to playing drums behind Vinny again sometime in the near future. Vinny you're the best. With much love...........Jerry
Vinny is a great accompanist and a solo player that deserves a lot more exposure and recognition!
Vinny, you keep talking about other players being "masters of their craft" and how honored you are to play with them.
Do you not realize YOU are also a "master of your craft" and they are honored to play with you?
It takes a truly talented and knowledgeable musician to make everyone who plays with them sound better.
Nobody does it any better than Vinny Raniolo
i can spend all nigth listening this great virtuoso
Vinny is not only a world class guitarist, he is also a super nice guy!
I bet Vinny isn't super nice or stupid enough to jam with some illiterate heavy metal guitarist: I bet he's constantly turning down offers to jam from music shipwrecks.
Listening to this ... and trying to play a little with him .. makes me love love love . learning guitar 🌷♥️🌻
❤I Adore your talent an the gift of music you share with us Me 😊As I listen to all of your music I think of my father-he’d be 104 if he was still here. He would have loved your music ! Because of him I grew up listening to jazz and big band, especially Glenn Miller. I always remember the music coming from the garage 🎶🎵as a kid . Now I’m almost 60! 😆

Without someone as talented as Vinny Raniolo, and there are very few, Only helps Frank Vignola sound better.
Vinny Raniolo e Frank Vignola sono emigrati di origini italoamericani di Ragusa le origini dei suoi genitori di Raniolo mi sembra per Vignola provincia di Modena.
Si,grandissimi profezionisti è un onore...
Perfection! This guy is an extraordinary musician!
Vinny and Frank are legends! This guys rhythm and lead playing is exceptional X
Cannot believe that I just came across this. Not just an interview but a masterclass on plectrum-style chord melody and chord soloing.
I first heard Vinny and Frank play about fifteen years ago at the Theater at Little Washington, Virginia. What a wonderful night. Beautiful.
I could listen to him all day long.
It's absolutely delightful to listen to Vinny's music. In his style he's second to NONE.
Soooo good, Vinny! You are just one of those who can make everyone around you shine while you humbly take a back seat. Respect bro!
0:55 Stompin' At The Savoy (Sampson)
4:47 If I Had You (Campbell / Connelly)
8:24 Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans? (DeLange / Alter)
13:18 It's Been a Long, Long Time (Styne / Cahn)
16:38 A Kiss To Build a Dream On / What A Wonderful World (Kalmar / Ruby / Hammerstein II) (Thiele / Weiss)
You're welcome :)
What a lovely man. His ability exceeds his modesty by a long measure. Beautiful clean sound and an effortless mastery of harmony, line and rhythm.
Vinny, you are a great inspiration. Not only an amazing guitar player, but also an amazing and humble personality.
Arie Koren I agree such a beautiful player and a beautiful person
Very glad to find this -- Vinny is an extremely talented player. He speaks about his rhythm role, but here he's demonstrating his facility in the chord melody style. Wonderful stuff!

Elegant, interesting and beautiful. I've been listening to you and Franky for ages, but I've listened closely to your solo performance tonight, here on this video. Enthralling, a joy to listen to. Thanks.
Vinny is a great guitarist, and he's a great accompanist with Frank.
Outstanding! Such a humble guy
Told you that you were a GREAT player Vinny. Chris.
Truly very impressive.
Hard work pays off. Color me jealous. ;p
How can a great musician be so modest.
Ken weedon
He is a master.. true thing.. being a great rhythm player is I feel the hardest thing, I know people who say they are lead players but are not any good at chord work.. Vinny is great!! I really liked him, Frank and Tommy Emmanuel together..
Vinny; You are a very sympathic Person...and you play very well the guitar!
I'm glad Vinny Raniolo endorses Wayne Wright at about 4:30 . Wright is probably the most underrated rhythm guitarist I know of. Thanks.
He"s a great guitarist and really provides space for Frank and Tommy when you watch their videos. Great interview!
One of the greats, jazz guitar is in very good hands.
I love how Vinny ends almost every song with that little inward smile.
Vinny, the great American songbook is in good hands.
A rhythm guitar superstar
It's obvious by his playing that his work and dedication have paid off.
Vinny ....you are amazing ! Learn the showman stuff and you will blow the world away !!! Magic !
Great choice of lively songs.
I thought that I did Wonderful World until I heard Vinny really do it! Damn he's great!
Shit! This guy is so much better than just a rhythm guitar player, which he no doubt does very well too. I'm so often let down by jazz guitarists that have a rather dull formulaic approach to playing, but not this time.
Great!!
Bravo!
great guitar player!!!
Saw him, Frank, and Gary Mazaroppi in Goshen, IN this past Saturday evening. Astonishing.
Hi Vinnie. (all of Me) June Saratoga. I learned alot. Thanks. see you next year in California I hope.
unbelievable
A consummate professional at work.

"Ey Vinny! Play da thing ya' know? Ya' know, da thing? Da badda-bing badda-boom thing. Ya' know?"
What guitar is Vinny playing? Vinny is such a fantastic player, both of you bring such exciting music to all of us, stay together ❤️
Collings
Does anyone know what that piece was at the beginning?
"Stompin' at the Savoy," a jazz/swing standard.
Skeetshooting7 ji
Who makes his cutaway acoustic he's playing in the video.
Collings
What are the songs that start at 04:47 (familiar but can't place it), 08:23 (less familiar) and 13:17 (don't know it)?
04:47 If I Had You 08:23 Do You Know What It Mean To Miss New Orleans 13:17 Kiss Me Once, Kiss Me Twice, It's Been A Long Time
Thanks Shelly, much appreciated.
Anyone know the name of the song that started about 17:39?
sounds like what a wonderful world to me
Yup, Wonderful World is certainly in the medley. The song immediately before WW that's driving me crazy. I know it, but I can't name it.
to me it just sounds like an intro... But it could be frome another tune of course. i wouldn't know :)
+Tobias Brodtkorb
Thanks for helping, Tobias. It's definitely a jazz classic; I can almost put words to it. I'll leave the question out there, and hope that someone else recognizes it.
Thanks again,
PickerDad
The song just before "What a Wonderful World" is "A Kiss to Build a Dream On" -- begins at 16:38.
Better than the Beatles, that's for sure.
I wonder why he plays a flat top, rather than the typical archtop... that chord melody work, the slides on the treble strings, etc., would sound just killer on an old L5. Sounds fine on the Collings, but for jazz... does he ever explain this?
I love the sound of the Collings . Very warm.
He's also got a Guild Artist Award he plays on some of his videos. I like the sound he gets out of the Collings. Very versatile guitar. I was so impressed I went out and got one. It's got a longer scale length than a Gibson archtop so it's louder and stays in tune better. Outstanding build quality too -- well above Gibson's standards.
I asked Vinny and Frank why their guitars were so different when they play together. They said the difference in the sound of their guitars is what they want for the audience. Not sure if that's why Vinny plays the flat top by himself or if it just evolved because of their duo.
