That’s my family! A good 15 minutes of fame lol.
It got to the point of ABC getting a hold of the story because Costco was initially not terribly concerned, when my mom called about it they basically offered to refund it and that was it. My dad heard about it, contacted KOMO (our ABC affiliate) and they got it on the news that night. Producer at ABC news saw it and got it national and the rest, as you shared, was history. Recalls popped up everywhere.
What’s funny to me is that single line they got from me. It’s actually more awkward and funny when you hear me say it then it was written down. They asked what happened, I explained the whole thing and they they picked just that one line for the newscast that night lol.
Ah, a fun memory. I still have the original KOMO broadcast saved.

i personally find this bit of lost media really interesting because of how (at least theoretically) easy it would be to possibly find and obtain a copy of it. it's one of those cases of lost media where it's _right there,_ you can see it there just hidden in plain sight and it wouldn't be impossible for someone to have a defective copy, yet it just isn't posted online anywhere. i do hope this gets found, it sounds really interesting and kinda funny to just be watching TS2 one day then suddenly there's someone throwing around F-bombs like it's a football

    • @catholiccontriversy
      @catholiccontriversy Год назад +12

"Readily available" lost media is the kind we need more people talking about. There's a 6 tape cartoon series called "Little People" (no relation to the TLC show) that had a wide release that is partially lost, and the only reason the Christmas tape and Jokes Riddles and Rhymes tape is found is because I had the Christmas tape as a child and found it in old stuff and found JR&R at a thrift shop in the VHS bin. Then there's things like crackle originals that could be downloaded DRM free to the PSP that are lost. And even though it was a limited release I'm quite sure there are more copies of The Legend of McDonald Land Loch out there that people don't even realize are rare.

  • @crow_man72

That made me remember a glitch I had on my Toy Story 1-3 movie set, more specifically on the 3rd film. I'm not sure if anyone else experienced this, but in the scene where Andy gives the toys to Bonnie, the movie would switch to whatever was last watched/played so we'd have to fast forward a bit in that scene. I called it the "time travel part" and according to my parents it had nothing to do with the disc or TV, as it worked just fine.

To those who doubt this rumor, here's my personal experience...
Circa 2003, I was temporarily living with my Aunt's family during a CPS allegation involving my guardians. (They won in the end and I moved back in with them.) My aunt had a large DVD collection with a home theater setup unfamiliar to my 7 year old self at the time. I was browsing the movies and noticed a Dual Pack of Toy Story 1 and 2, to which my aunt said, "If you watch Toy Story 2, you're only to watch it half way, then you'll have to do something else."
I did not choose to watch Toy Story 2 (I watched Pocahontas), so I cannot confirm if my Aunt knowingly owned this defective DVD release, but I can't think of any other reason to specify watching only half of a specific movie.
Edit: When I said "dual pack" I was purposefully omitting the Disc 3 Bonus Features from my memory. This Aunt originally lived in California before moving to AZ after me, and several members of our family were in Utah before California, going back and forth every other year for family visits, etc. We had several Wagon Wheel Café glasses before the printing wore off after numerous washes.

Given the way a DVD Video disc is authored and the rest of the manufacturing process (mastering to glass and making stampers from it), it's likely that Technicolor discovered the error very early on and re-authored the disc. Either they had already made and shipped discs with the faulty authoring at that point, or one or more stampers with the faulty authoring were used accidentally alongside the ones with the corrected authoring, possibly in different pressing plants.

DVD processes are automated because they are digitally pressed. A VHS tape has to be have it's inner filmstrip manually produced and wound. A VHS copy would have had MULTIPLE instances where the mistake would be easily caught, but all it takes for a DVD to have an encoding error is for a single file to be out of place, while a ton of DVD's are just slammed together by a machine without anyone checking the files that the laser it etching onto it.

However, I do have an observation. This set was released on October 17th, 2000, right before the 2000 holiday season. Copies sold during that holiday season usually had a coupon book insert for other Buena Vista releases, accompanying the scene selection inserts. One of the copies I gifted had said coupon book, but my own doesn't. I'm not saying that all copies with the coupon inserts have the error, let alone any, but it's defiantly possible. again, this is just an observation.

Well, at least it was just profanity. If it had included a violent R-rated movie in the error, that would be horrifying

It's fake because disney can't put swear words in kids movies

as a kid I think i experienced Toy story 1 and 2 through either rented tapes or at 1 point in time i was gifted either or as DVDs... idk where my official TS1 dvd went but I do own TS1 and 2 digitally and since I of course have a vpn account i have also downloaded blu-ray quality rips of Ts1 and 2 for watching at 60fps with an fps converter (Bluesky Framerate converter)

If I was a principal and a teacher took that DVD set to my office I would sell it on eBay for ten dollars and everything taken care and that money can be spent on a field trip to the mall where all the kids and teachers can have their own lunches as something nice

    The G to R wasn’t all that G to R to E to A to T.

0:23 In the UK, the first movie got a PG rating, whilst the sequels all got U ratings. I found it funny and weird that In the US, all 4 were given G ratings, while in the UK, the first one was the only one to ever get a PG rating but the sequels were all given U ratings. kind of unfair if you ask me.
