Mickey Rooney. Judy Garland. Gershwin music. And Tommy Dorsey to play it. Who could ask for anything more? From Garland's rendition of "But Not for Me" to the grand finale of "I Got Rhythm," Girl Crazy is one of the most buoyant tunefests ever put on-screen. Rich kid Danny Churchill (Rooney) has a taste for wine, women and song, but not for higher education. So his father ships him to an all-male college out West where there's not supposed to be a female for miles. But before Danny arrives, he spies a pair of legs extending out from under a stalled roadster. They belong to the dean's granddaughter, Ginger Gray (Garland), who is more interested in keeping the financially strapped college open than falling for Danny's romantic line. At least at first.
Special Features: Introduction by Mickey Rooney(HD); Commentary by Film historian John Fricke; Comedy Short "Hollywood Daredevils" ; Vintage Cartoon "The Early Bird Dood It" ; "I Got Rhythm" Stereo Remix Version (HD); Audio Only Bonus "Bronco Busters" Outtake; Theatrical Trailer (HD).
Directed By Norman Taurog, Busby Berkeley
Starring Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland, Gil Stratton

This is when judy garland was crowned the most beautiful woman to ever exist. Her voice just makes her even more beautiful in this film.

She is so incredible looking. Her beautiful eyes-so unique- adorable nose, beautiful mouth, so expressive. I love her rhythm in her dancing and her hands and arms. She knows just what to do to make the song work. I have never seen anyone who can claim that amazing electricity. She captivates any audience she performs for. She takes command just by walking out on stage. Truly- no one compares with Judy.

IMHO, Judy didn't need pills or psychoanalysis or stupid fools dictating how she should live. She needed what we all need...a secure, loving marriage. This would have healed much in her life and would heal much in our world today.

It's hard to find the words to express the effect Judy has on me. It's not just her physical appearance (though it certainly is that). There is a femininity that we see very rarely anymore. Judy is the TOTAL PACKAGE.

Mickey Rooney was so cute in this movie. Watching him run by the car when he was singing CAN YOU USE ME was hysterical. He was so talented it was unbelievable. Dancing, piano, drums, banjo , voice and scrumptious hair. I laugh as hard as Judy Garland does when I

I think this was the first of their movies together where Mickey was chasing Judy, instead of the other way around. I think it’s more entertaining this way.

The idea that Judy Garland was not “beautiful” is one of the dumbest myths that some have tossed about. She certainly had challenges that other big female stars of her day did not have-namely, she was 4 feet 11 inches tall and always child-sized. This was a big reason why the studio pumped her with amphetamines from the start. Any iota of extra weight on a girl that dainty was not acceptable for MGM’s “glamor standard.” Thus began the struggle that eventually killed Garland. Even so, one can see that when Garland was super thin (98 pounds was their “ideal” for her) she was a stunner and every bit as glamorous and pretty as the bombshells, even if her image was promoted as the wholesome glamor-girl, rather than as the vamp or seductress glamor-girl. When she left MGM and went the route of being a major “live” entertainer along the lines of Sinatra, Martin, Sammy Davis, Perry Como, etc., she could relax and get a bit heftier (as well as making even bigger money.) But the damage was already done in terms of addiction, as often as she tried to kick it-and she tried many times. Judy Garland just wanted to eat after ten years of starvation and overwork. Luckily, she left a blazing film legacy at MGM and accomplished an entire “second act” that was even bigger than her first one. As Sammy Davis Jr. said, she was the first female multi-media “superstar of superstars,” conquering screen, radio, records, Broadway, TV, Vegas, huge concert stages, etc. Only Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra and Elvis had such wide and varied success in almost all mediums on the men’s side. I guess Barbra Streisand was the great successor to Garland, and even she did not make a big impact in “live” concert shows, avoiding them for much of her life because of stage fright. Seeing Garland this young and so naturally gifted and riveting makes it very sad, indeed, that she didn’t find a guy or manager she could trust with her money and heart and health concerns. That’s show biz, but she sure packed a lot of living and success into 47 years, singing for her supper since age TWO (!) 😑
