WOW !! LOL !Hey ladies!!! ......Please!......ok? You can stop drooling now I’m sure he’s taken! lol! ( the acronym LOL means that I’m talking to you in good humor!) LOL Oh and I’m sure he’s a little too old for you girl ... don’t you think ?LOL
Just love Tandy products. Have made many Christmas gifts in leather. It helps so much to have such great teachers on your videos so we can work properly with your products. Gives us good success.
I love watching your videos, they always make me want to start making leather products. I love the colouring that can be added to the leather. Just bought my first beginners kit and already I have established a new hobby. Thumbs up.
if you apply the super sheen correctly it works great. experiment with it on a test peice as results can vary. You'll have to get a feel for how you are applying it.
Can this be done on used leather? I have a used saddle I purchased that I would like to do this with. What is your recommended product to use to clean the leather prior to painting it? What product do you use as a sealer on a saddle? I need to know all paint, sealer, dye, etc products I will need so I can order them from you online. Thanks!
+Holly DeGonia Hello Holly! It's somewhat difficult to say without knowing the quality of the leather, how it was sealed, how it was maintained, etc. We have a wide variety cleaners and conditioners that would likely work at www.tandyleather.com/en/category/conditioners-n, however the safest bet might be to take it to a local saddle shop where a saddle expert can see it in person and give recommendations of how to rejuvenate and refinish it.
Hi George great videos, I'm just starting and wondering what the difference was between Antique and Dye. I recently tried to do a key fob and when it came to the resist and dye part the resist I felt went on really well I left it overnight and then applied a Tannery dye professional water based stain (Mahogany) however when I went to wipe the excess off, the blocked areas weren't so blocked and the dye had stained everything, it sort of attempted to block out the dye but no where near as good as in your video. Do you have any ideas?thank you Sean
+Sean Ditch Great questions! To learn about some of the differences between Antiques and Dyes, you may enjoy reading the Leather Coloring 101 article on our blog, available at blog.leathercraftlibrary.com/2015/05/12/leather-coloring-101/ Also, you may find this video helpful in answering some of your questions on how to better use acrylics such as antique gel or hi-lite with resist techniques: ruclips.net/video/dU3-oKlifKQ/видео.html
+Tandy Leather Hiya George, thanks for the reply, one more question hope you don't mind, other than a swivel knife is there another tool that deals with intricate carving such as calligraphy type writing?
Swivel knives are typically the preferred method, however you may also find a few stamps or craftaids to assist in your efforts - www.tandyleather.com/en/search/?sSearch=Alphabet
Now how many coats of the super sheen do I want to use to get my stuff to look professionally stained in the two tone type look, like the design being a natural color, but the background (and the detailed cuts in the design) a nice but dark enough color so that the design stands out?
shym0nk3y George says that he typically uses two coats of super sheen and lets each one dry over night. The style you are referring to is often achieved by hand painting the background with a dye or stain and, after allow it to try, using super sheen to coat it. After allowing the Super Sheen to dry, use an antique gel over the project to create the two toned brown effect.
+shym0nk3y one good coat of Resolene (dried about 20 minutes..or more) resist great. can add a 2nd coat if you want to be super safe.acrylic dyes only. I heard Tandy stopped selling their "block out" because people figured out its just resolene with a different label (by the smell/look).
Great question! Cova Color Paint is an acrylic paint which sits on top of the leather, creating a vibrant color. Colored dye penetrates the leather, so the color is in the leather rather than on the leather, which makes it more resistant to scratching. Antiques and HiLite dye the leather, however they give significantly more emphasis on the tooled area of the leather.
Tandy Leather Thank you for your response! So would dye be used more for something that does not have tooling? Is there a difference from Antiques and HiLite dyes, though they are for the same purpose?
Jordan Becker Antiques and HiLite dyes are very similar in application, however the Antique is a gel whereas the HiLite is a liquid. Dyes typically color your leather and the tooling all the same uniform color where as Antiques and HiLite feature the tooling, as well as the natural inconsistencies in the leather. You can use Antiques and HiLite without tooling to dye the project while still giving it a more natural leather look.
***** Resist techniques are primarily used with stains and antiques. The dyes are designed to penetrate the leather, so unfortunately resists are not effective on them. To get color in an isolated area, try painting it on with a paintbrush.
Leider hat es bei mir nicht geklappt - 2x aufgetragen, jeweils über Nacht zum Trocknen liegen gelassen, dann antiquiert und es wurde leider dunkel statt hell....ich verstehe es nicht. 🤔
Our antique may have changed bottle design since this video was made, however the product is still the same! www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/search/site-search-results.aspx?sectionpath=3&processor=content&p_keyword=Antique
What technique might be used to get this white on black effect (right hand wallet)? The example shown is embossed naugahyde. I own an embossing plate for the pattern and have had good success stamping it into leather. However I'd like to add color. If the technique is the opposite i.e. black over white then that's okay. facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10206310798148722&l=5e29673f04
this man is one of best teachers i ever saw the way he talks makes so ease to learn from.
The best video I have seen, explaining perfectly what is resist, and how it works. Thank you.
Thank you for the demonstration and verbal instructions. This is just what I needed to see.
I loved your soft, gentle manner and technique.
I did as well--very soothing.

thank god for tandy leather vids !!answered all my questions
Hi. Does the super shene resist against your pro black oil dyes as well or just the antique dye?
2 thumbs up! It will be awhile before I try a project like this, but it is inspiring! Thank you!
That was Awesome 👏 I will try that!!!
wil this work with "all-in-one" colors as well as the cova colors, and gel antique finishes??
Would this technique work with Resolene instead of the Sheen product?
Are the 3 dyes the same for coloring acrylic material? Gel or liquid?
Esto es arte trabajar la piel o el cuero , es lo más lindo , siempre que sea hecho a manos..
Hola, estos son tintes al agua? O pintura especial para cuero, podría por favor decirme cómo lo puedo comprar?
Gracias
What kind of paint do you use it ? Please let me know...
Would the satin shene work for resisting aswell? (we're wanting to not need to get everything in the first few projects)?
Satin Shene does not work as well as super Shene as a resist
Thank you for the quick answer, and for the good videos!

Thanks a lot, this was really helpful!
Sooo.... the super sheen only works with high-lite or Antique? I take it that a regular spirit or oil based dye will still dye the super sheen. ???
Still such a great video 👍😍
When did he use the block out in this video?
At the veeeeerrry beginning. The one he used The little brush out of a cap with
I'm a bit new at this, so I might be found asking some surprisingly simple questions like this one. about how long does the cova color take to dry?
does the shene prevent the colors and dyes from bleeding out from contact with moisture or perspiration ?
What did he use block out for
Where do I buy block out?

could you apply the super shene over top of a dyed area.. and then re dye the alternate areas with a darker.. or antiquing perhaps?
Yes.
Can you paint over the die

Thanks for the video, lots of good information. I cringed a little when you bumped the dye bottle at the end. I thought you were going to dump it.
I may be doing wrong but I've used the super sheene with the professional dyes (both from Tandy) and it doesn't resist. Any ideas?

+Jim Thomas For a true white color, you may consider sealing the leather and then using white Cova Color acrylic paint on top.
LOL No drooling ladies okay?
He’s mine!
I kept cringing during the wipedown of those parts. He almost knocked over the dye bottle!
