- This is SkilSaw's newest portable jobsite saw which features a 8 1/4" blade. In this video I look at what the pros and cons of this saw as well as why Skilsaw chose to switch to a smaller blade versus the larger 10" blade.
Thank you for doing this review. I have really had a tough time finding reviews of the 8 1/4 worm drive saw. The manual also states (pg.42) that you can use a dado stack (Maximum width of 1/2'' & you have to use combination nut/
washer supplied with the SPT5005-DD insert). I think for the price and the torque, this table saw is a real winner. Again, I appreciate you taking the time to explain more about the saw.

I ended up buying the saw. My one comment is that the table is pretty small. If you buy this saw, you need to place it again another table. I'm using a Harbor Freight Hardwood Workbench and I place the saw so the pieces fall off the back onto the workbench. It's light and very portable. I bought the saw and stand as a package from Acme tools. Looking forward to making some cool stuff!

Thank you for the information. I bought this saw a few days ago, and found that the illustration for the installation of the riving knife guard is incorrect. Fig. 7 on pg. 18 shows the guard release lever (see blow up with arrow) attaching to the hole for the anti-kickback. Overall, this is a great compact table saw.

This is a very rare review, possibly, the only one on this particular model. Kudos! I finally got one myself recently, thanks to your review.
With that said, I would like to point out one thing you mentioned that might not be entirely accurate. It's about the way the saw should be stored.
You mentioned that the saw should be stored in only 2 orientations based on the instruction manual, which are either in the normal orientation (lying flat horizontally - ready-to-operate), or in the space saving orientation (lying vertically with the handle pointing upward). Both ways of storing the saw are accurate, per in the instruction manual. However, what isn't accurate is the reason you mentioned. You said that this saw needs to be stored in those specific orientations probably has something to do with this saw having the worm drive motor, and storing it in any other orientations might mess up with the oil and damage it.
The fact is that it has nothing to do with the worm drive motor or the oil inside. One main piece of evidence is that there is nowhere in the instruction manual that says the orientation of the worm drive motor can affect performance or cause any damage to itself. Think about it, if the orientation of the saw can actually cause potential damage to the motor, then important warnings should be placed somewhere on the outside of the package by Skil to prevent people from storing the package in the wrong orientation. No one has no control of how the package has been stored in the warehouse or in the UPS, FedEx truck before the saw arrives at the end user. Heck, when my saw weas delivered, the FedEx guy put the package down vertically and I had no idea which orientation that was for 5 hours before I got home from work. I saw it through the Ring doorbell the moment it was delivered. But there was nothing I could do. I was so nervous about this issue because of what you mentioned in this video. But after I took it out of the box, read the instruction manual, and looked at the saw from every angle carefully, I finally realized why Skil recommended those 2 storing orientations. It is much simpler than you might think. It's simply because of the design of the saw itself. Go back and take a look at your saw again and you will see that those 2 orientations are the only 2 ways to store this particular saw on any flat surface without damaging any parts of the saw.
You can think of the saw as a box. So, it has 6 surfaces, hence 6 possible ways to store the saw putting one of those 6 surfaces at the bottom (floor).
#1. The normal horizontal orientation (recommended)
#2. The vertical orientation with the left side of the saw down on the floor with the handle pointing upward (recommended)
#3. The opposite of #1, put the saw tabletop on the floor
I've only had this saw for a little under a month, but yesterday and the day before I ripped a bunch of strips of 2" walnut and 1 1/2" Hard Maple and I couldn't believe how easily it was ripping through them, it didn't bug out once and the cuts were precise and clean, although I did upgrade from the stock blade to a higher quality one. That's actually the main issue i've had with it, it's just a lot more difficult to find a wide variety of blades. I went with the 40 Tooth ABT from DeWalt, which is not ideal for ripping, still it did a fantastic job, i just had to slow down the feed rate.

Torn between this, the Ridged Pro Jobsite and DeWalt DWE7491RS. All in the same price bracket and probably would upgrade whatever I get with the Fulton miter gauge and possibly the Rousseau 2790 stand if I don't end up making a table.
I was completely ready to buy the Dewalt. I love Dewalt tools and I usually look at them as the gold standard for tools. I looked at many of these jobsite saws in person and I ultimately decided on the Skilsaw. 2 of the biggest factors: almost all metal parts on the Skil, and the worm drive. Thanks for watching!
@@TheDadBodWorkshop Did you look at/consider the Delta 36-725T2? It's still in that same price bracket but has the cast iron table, awesome fence system but obviously is a much bulkier unit and isn't going to be getting tossed in the back of the pickup any time soon.
I think ultimately, one of these smaller job site saws to start with then potentially upgraded with a Rousseau table may be a possible route to keep the up front cost down or just keep saving and get a Laguna F1 but at that point, it turns into the "well for just a bit more you can get ___".
I don't really need the portability. Just something to wheel out of the garage into the driveway to work.
My Skill Table Saw STP 99-11 just stop working. We were using it, turned it off after use, went back to use it and now it doesn’t turn on. Is there a reset button, if yes, how do we reset it?

Great video! Not sure if I missed this or not, but can you tell me if it has a soft start feature?
It does not. Similar saws have that feature but I read it can negatively impact the saws performance.
June 17, 2022. I have on order the Skil saw that is 10 inches and comes with a stand. Now I got looking at this model that has the worm gear and now thinking of cancelling the order as it has not been shipped yet and buying this one for 599.99. I am up in Canada and that is why the price is high.
One question. Will a magswitch feather board stick to the top? Other-words will a magnet stick or is it all aluminum. I assume the fence is aluminum? Thanks for that great video and I assume an 8 inch Dado set up works.
Great question. I believe it is all aluminum so a magnet would not work. This saw will accept dado blades but I don't have the manual in front of me so I can't recall how large it can go. Thanks for watching!
Truth be told? It appears that Dewalt, Milwaukee, Skilsaw, and (Drum roll please.) Hercules at Harbor Freight are all job site saw contenders with each other, and all are reviewed similarly enough with caveats in each. Having said that? This corded 8 1/4 worm drive more than eeks ahead in capabilities and build, and where the hairs are split depends on where you find your priorities in what you expect.
For me this saw wins:
1. Better value buying corded. (The Milwaukee is 18v.)
2. 8 1/4 cuts smoothest for trim work.
3. Fairly much all metal construction.
4. Takes a small dado set.
5. Reviews from professionals are uniformly slightly higher than ‘Yellow’. (Make no mistake....the deserved industry benchmark like it or not.)
6. Even though my use will be carpentry trim work? Knowing that this saw has worm drive power and torque reassures comfort in doing ‘some’ heavier demand cutting.
I ran some wet 2x6 treated through a neighbor’s SPT99-01, highly highly impressed, and the only thing I need to investigate now is does the added torque here chip laminate flooring more so.....a biggie. (Testing that this week.)

I've heard the worm drive is quieter than universal motor direct drive saws. Is that true and how much different is it?

Question: I noticed when shutting the table saw off, there's a mild spark in the motor. I've only used this saw once and noticed the spark. Is this normal?
That's pretty normal for these types of electric motors. I believe once you go up to a brushless motor then the sparks aren't present but I can't be sure. I have a handful of DeWalt power tools (brushed) that have little sparks in it. Thanks for watching!

The Dewalt 8 1/2" saw is real plasticky, this unit looks like a peice of fine jewelry.
