My first thought when I saw the carriage return lever was "It would be cool if it acted like an enter key", only to find out that's exactly what it does.

I'm a little surprised he didn't make the connection that the vertical scrolling is a throw back to literally feeding the paper up and down into the type writer. I would have thought that was obvious but he surprisingly breezed right over that.

Yeah, most people his age probably have never seen a real typewriter unless it's in a movie.
@@mercentperrault it unlocks the mechanism that moves the roller forwards, so you can bring it back using the same lever (LF), and pulling it down also rotates the roller by one line (CR). You can do each of these things separately (in a typewriter) or both in one motion (CR/LF). Some newer typewriters would do this on their own and it was hilariously strong and loud.
When you're typing and the roller reaches the end of the line, there's a satisfactory DING to let you know.

1:52 original this is for “Enter”, is not the same key as the video show, the switcher in the video is for adjusting the typing force from heavy to light.

only time I can say that this is truly a terrible product for the price, since you can get a better KB for £100 in the UK, called a model M (though you do lose the aesthetic, you gain the retro computer aesthetic which is nice too)

*Il Papa Vitielo* I own a Model M and use it from time to time. I love it, but must point out that in the world of enthusiast keyboards, there is no definite "better" or "worse." The MX Blues in this thing are different from the buckling springs in the M, and there are people who will prefer them to the sheer the force needed to actuate a BS switch. And it's not like the M is the end-all be-all either; many people prefer the older Model F boards. My point, don't say that this thing is worse than an M, because there are people who will prefer it anyway.

AbuBakr Akram, good point, but my point is not about mx blues being worse than buckling springs, its that for the price, ignoring aesthetic, this keyboard is far worse value to the average buyer than the model M. I have no problem with the switches in question, just the price they ask for the keyboard, $300 for mx blue is a little much imo, when there are so many good cherry boards for less than $100 that work just as well and, with the vintage cherry boards, have even better, higher quality cherry switches. Without the aesthetic this has no point to be bought for, but it is true, no switch is truly the best.
And now my grandma is getting used to typing on my computer because of that keyboard

The Chrome lever is the Carriage Return, or is known on computers now commonly as "Enter", but many keyboards have "Return" or "CR" or even the symbol "Down and back to the Left". Yes, once upon a time to start a new line you needed to physically push the roller carriage with your left hand, which held the piece of paper on the roller and moved the paper and roller leftwards as you typed, and when you hit the far stop it would engage the roller gear to rotate the roller down another line. Unlike on modern printers where it is the head that moves, on mechanical typewriters it was fixed and it was the paper that moved. Watching him unbox it and wonder what it was makes you realise there are whole generations who have never seen or used this older technology!

To feel like a typewriter the switches should be super stiff, but is not reccomended. IDK how an IBM Selectric feels

Probably something with very stiff springs (IDK, 150/200g of force?). You won't find switches already made, you will have to mod other switches

Corsair k70s in mx cherry blue or any other mx cherry blue keyboard is a lot cheaper to get.

You've obviously never used a mechanical typewriter. The silver lever was a mechanical return lever that moved the roller carrier back to start and advanced one line. That's why keyboards call it a RETURN key.

Maybe if it had the same tension necessary to push the keys as an actual typewriter, and the same mechanical snap (which is pretty satisfying) that an actual old typewriter has. Maybe then it would be worth it. It would have to be THAT sort of nostalgia for me to consider dropping $300 on it.
I have been rocking the same exact keyboard for years, and have never felt inclined to upgrade. It doesn't have cherry mx keys, and I don't think most people care enough about their keyboards to need anything other than what they already have.
Typewriters make mechanical keyboards feel like trash.
There's some truth to that. The absolute gold standard for keyboard feel is the IBM selectric typewriter. Nothing else even comes close.
When they designed the original model M PC keyboard, they had that in mind (but didn't quite manage to duplicate). I had one of the model M 'spacesaver' keyboards and it was pretty good, just wicked heavy and noisy;.

I have one. Also have the wrist pad that goes with it. The combo is great. As for no audio plug I use blue tooth one phone head set.
Went to high school in the seventies. Learned to type on a real Under Wood Type Writer. My 16th Birthday present was a re built 1940s type writer. Parents thought it was funny. It now sits in my study, library / man cave. Have yet to have a guest not try it out. Long before my 1930s Italian Barbers Chairs that face my 70 inch flat screen tv. This is not something to show off at Starbucks. This is something to sit back with single malt scotch and catch up with family and friends. The buttons along the top can be programmed.
