I play this song, because today I said goodbye to a friend. He died at the age of 36. Although he was young during most of the Dead's days, he saw the last concert, on Jerry's birthday before Jerry died. The laid him out today in the shirt he would have wanted to wear....of course, a dead shirt. If anyone reads this, keep my friend in mind, because he was a true Deadhead. RIP Steve.
Greetings, friend! This our "athhem" a close group of friends; we play at every "loss". And "Amazing Grace". B4 death, (when we know) it's "With a Little Help" God bless you, your friend's rests well! ❤️🎶
Jerry Garcia bought old comic book artifacts from me out of my Haight Ashbury comic book store as well as a Rick Griffin art gallery opened in The Cannery down in Fisherman's Wharf 1991. Ripple remains my favorite Dead song ever.....
Nothing touches me like this song! The words and music are perfection. I hope my family remembers how much this song means to me at the end of my life. Thank You, Chris for being the inspiration behind my love of The Grateful Dead , Jerry Garcia and this awesome song! Its eternal.
Hi mama, your story reminds me of mine. When my grandson was just a babe and wouldn't fall asleep,I would put him in his stroller and walk around the neighborhood singing this song to him...soft,sweet,and full of love. He doesn't remember but I will never forget.
as we have ALL sang....Let there be music to fill the air....I lost my Jimmy....after 50 years....let there be songs to fill the air....thank you for all of our great times together with you guys in our backround....with much love grateful dead...from Jim and Anne Marie.xox
There's so much wisdom in this song: "There is a road, no simple highway Between the dawn and the dark of night And if you go no one may follow That path is for your steps alone"
Ripples should be a compulsory part of the curriculum in school classes across the world. What a gift to the world, a song that soothes the soul and puts a spring into your step.God bless the Dead.
+Barbara Stepien-Foad I feel the same way. I wish I had a time machine sometimes. You can feel the vibe just listening to the video. I wish all today could go back and see how it was, and how it still should be.
THE GREASTEST BAND TO PLAY WHILE DEAD!! I LOVE THEIR UNIQUE FOLKSY, BLUESY-ROCK, COUNTRY-FRIED MUSIC STILL RESONATES THROUGH MY STEREO EVERY MORNING!!! LONG LIVE THE GRATEFUL DEAD!!
I heard this song in the Iao Valley for the first time and fell in love with it. Every time I listen to it, I'm carried back to simpler times in a beautiful place. Thank you. I'll be a Dead Head forever.
wonderful music from a wonderful group...LET THERE BE SONGS TO FILL THE AIR...Oh My what wonderful times we had and they continue to give us thru their music....My heart feels like I am 15 and I am 60!!!! So Young and Alive!!!!!!! Thank You gentlemen!!!!!!
"If I knew the way, I would take you home" This song has so many inspiring lyrics. When it first came out, it was one of the very few Dead songs that made it to mainstream radio, thus it always seemed played out to me. However, in the past few years, I have come to really like this song. Just sit and chill and listen to this song. It will inspire you.
This tune was the first I had played at my son's "Celebration Of Life Service" Saturday, November 10, 2012! It was five days after I lost him when he was driving to early morning college classes on the highway having a freak front left blowout dying on impact with the guardrail! Tears flow everytime I hear it! Hunter, you are deeply missed Buddy! RIP: June 2, 1993 to November 5, 2012!
Last heard of, ripples of sound waves of this song had reached a galaxy far, far away and still travelling at the speed of light. Sound travelling at the speed of light! It is perhaps seeking out Jerry somewhere out there, scattering pleasure on the way, all the way.
A lovely sentiment. However, the signal of this song has only traveled 36 light years. The first radio signal has gone 100 light years. While there are quite a few in that volume, on the scale of the galaxy, that's hardly even noticeable. Space is Big. Really Big. zidbits.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/how-far-in-space-our-radio-broadcasts-reach1.jpg
My dear sir, I completely agree with you but I was consciously indulging in a bit of hyperbole. After all, THAT has no limitations like mundane statics:)
Reading these comments I seem like I am very similar to some of you guys. Listening to the finest of music for 40 years now and just recently stumbled upon the Grateful Dead. Can't believe I wasn't into this band before. Just got American Beauty on vinyl and well....I am simply amazed!!!!! Only sadness is that I won't be able to see them live.
I saw my first concert in 1968 in the old Fillmore East. The following year I saw them in Binghamton at Harpur St. College and I was hooked. After more than 500 concerts, there are some songs that still give you the "chills". This is one of them !
many years ago I was camping out in the Indiana Dunes. The Grateful Dead had just had a gig in Chicago ...well ...many of their true followers came down to camp in the Dunes. Oh my.. it was amazing.... I woke up with a sweet fellow curled up by the warm embers of my fire and another asked me to point him to the lake because he needed a bath. Needless to say .... that morning you could get a lovely contact-high just walking through the park. God Bless them all...Great Memories
It makes me little teary-eyed myself. This soulful man always made me smile when I saw him sing. Even when it was a sad song. I miss him. I put on a CD these days and it still makes me smile. I'm thankful for that! But it's not quite the same smile. RIP, dear friend. I'm gonna put "Europe '72" on right now. Thanks for listening to a sentimental old man. Gotta put that cd on now. BYE
There are those that enjoy both. My Grandfather served in the Euro-African Campaign of WWII, my Uncle served in the Korean War, my other Uncle served in Vietnam, and my son served in Afghanistan (3 tours). Those that are still with us love it. ( I make sure to introduce the concept THANK YOU for your service! I introduce the music to those who are willling to hear. Thank you again for your sacrifice. I know first hand what it was. Love and Peace!
Hey Wildcats I know. So sad his parting 20+ years now. But I am so grateful to the dead always. They gave so much to so many. Taught me another way that I still live by. Love and only love. Whenever I get mad with the US (Trump!!) I just think of Jerry, the son of Spanish immigrants but quintessentially a Californian. Love to all deadheads from the UK. x
J E M Jerry's father was Spanish, his mother Irish, born in Anerica, absolutely nothing to do with illegal aliens that our president is trying to protect. Be careful that your opinion doesn't get in the way of the facts. God bless America
Whether you like this band or not this song is a time capsule. A ticket to a place that can no longer be visited. If one song can be bigger than a band this is it. I never liked this band, but this song takes you back to a time and a place. If there was a jug band that could play both heaven and hell, this is it!
Been without electricity for HOURS, (hurricane Sandy) just put the "love light on" and all our neighbors are here. Started up the generator for tunes (Jerry), and to cook dinner. Yes, some things just "ARE". To listen and understand is cool. To have listened and have been there is, "to get it-always". Hope everyone is safe through the storm. Peace and Love always..
I'm 46. I had friends who absolutely loved the dead. I was always on the fence. This song came on my playlist last night. ( Working nights ) I listened to this song over and over off and on through my shift. It's beautiful, perfect. It made me cry from happiness. Give me some under rated, or your fav. I want more lol.
The Deads rendition of Peggy-O is one of my favourites. It has (Best version) in brackets if you search for it yourself. Or you can copy this part of the link (/watch?v=2JHZGWDFL24). Enjoy good sir!
To go to a Dead concert was to be transported to another dimension. It was a dimension of musical mastery. The Dead would transport you on their music. They start out playing a song like Uncle John's Band and go off on a 20-30 minute jam and then at the end of the song you realize what happened and all you can do is just think "WOW THAT WAS AWESOME." And then they do it again and again and again.....
I listened to the Dead for the first 19 years of my life before I really got it. Their one of those bands, they grow on you over time. I remember when it first really clicked with me... Been on the bus ever since. Just keep listening and exploring, you may just find out what everybody's talking about :)
Arlog 11, I completely agree with your statement. I am a lover of all music but for some reason the Dead never felt right to me. I had a boss who was obsessed, dropped out of school to follow them and so he would play them constantly and I really just never understood it. Two years later it all makes sense and I'm so "grateful" that it has finally hit me. They are wonderful. I am in love with their sound and vibe :)
some of my greatest memories were hitching to the next show and going into that great happy place meet great new people and make great friends. When I was pregnant use to play for him and when he was born he loved it and now his son loves it it just keeps going from my Mom to me to my son to his son got to love when music can carry through your life to others in the future!
I play this song, because today I said goodbye to a friend. He died at the age of 36. If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music
Would you hold it near as it were your own?
It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
Perhaps they're better left unsung
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air
Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow
Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men
There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone
You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall you fall alone
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home

Sure is a beautiful song. It makes my heart pound 😁 😍 (°;~}
Brilliant still.
Hard not to get teary listening to this. God Bless you all.

This is the first grateful dead song i've ever heard, and just by reading these comments i can see their legacy. I'm in love.
There's so much wisdom in this song:
"There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone"
"There is a fountain, that was not made by the hands of men". Thank you Robert Hunter and Jerry

The first song my son, who is now 26, sang from the back seat while strapped in his car seat when he was a baby. Thanks for the memory!
If I knew the way, I would take you home. Indeed. Oh, Jerry, how we miss you.
Hey Wildcats I know. So sad his parting 20+ years now. But I am so grateful to the dead always. They gave so much to so many. Taught me another way that I still live by. Love and only love. I want this played at my funeral. Does anyone know what show this is?
+Bongo Dave Is this the 1980 one that went onto Reckoning? I've seen the vid before & it's very familiar.
This is from the 10/31/80 show at radio city during their acoustic set.
+Joe Smith - Yes it is - I was fortunate enuf to be at the bookend shows at the Warfield...
+Bongo Dave Played it at my father's. An excellent choice.
Broke down Palace 6-7-77 it’s listed on top of the page. Keep on keeping on
what show ??! how could yuo not include that in description ?!
MTV unplugged, duh. Jk man I understand your frustration.
This is Radio City Music Hall 10/31/80. A lot of the material and similar acoustic dead can be heard on their album Reckoning.
The Greatful Dead are pure love and happiness. cant explain it any better
made by the hands of God.
Your so in tune i agree with you 100%.
