This break down was insane. This is the best Gojira breakdown I have ever seen, great job.
agreed, it was awesome
Thank you guys so much!!
I would love to see a backstory of Serizawa. His other experiments, his war years, his deeper relationships with the Yamanes, etc. I think it would make for an interesting movie, but it probably would not have Godzilla or be Godzilla dominated, so I doubt Toho would ever touch a project like that.
It could have a parasite that kills or a smaller monster
I like the mystery. He was a war hero, but we never learn about his time in war. He's a brilliant scientist, but we only ever meet him after he's created his worst invention. He's to be engaged to Emiko, but by the time the film starts, he's abandoned his humanity and become a shut-in. It adds this mystery to him that works so well!
@@DMan1954 I don’t have any issues with that. I think that we have characters that don’t need a back story but are given one regardless - Han Solo anyone?! But with Serizawa, I think that it would be rather intriguing (if it is well written). His early experiments and his war record which gave him his notoriety. And heck to make it all official (and for a little fun nod), after the war, we do see him befriend an American newspaper man who writes about his accomplishments - Mr. Steve Martin! 😁
Good essay. Crazy how you can still discuss a movie so much after 70 years.
DMan has here the framework of an article in an academic journal of film criticism. Would be worth looking into getting it published in an online, open-access, professionally-reviewed periodical devoted to discussing film and television.
Thank you so much!
Woah! Thank you, @austin! That means so much to me! I have no idea how to go about that, but that would be awesome
I used to watch your videos all the time in 2017 and i just returned. Hope you reach 100k
same i came back in 2020 or 21, long time ago
Thank you guys so much for giving my videos another shot! It means a lot to me
@@DMan1954 no problem! youtube was just boring for me at that time 2017, 2018 etc. lol
I have observed that with any weapon, there must be a certain motive behind its use. It must be used wisely, and not just for power or control. There has to be certain factors in play. The Oxygen Destroyer was used to get rid of the threat, which was Gojira, the nuclear allegory. This weapon, however, could also cause damage that not even nuclear weapons could come close to, which was clearly stated throughout the film, and even in later films such as Godzilla vs Destroyah and King of the Monsters (1956 version).
That being said, I personally am stictly against using nuclear weaponry for *any* reason, no matter how "good" or "right" the motive may seem.
As a side note, I *love* your use of Minus One's OST alongside the 1954 score in this video essay, D-Man! So powerful!
Very interesting and thoughtful analysis. I appreciate the analyzing of this film after 70 years, and still making me think
Thank you! My favorite part of the original film is how it is so complex we can still talk about it all these years later
And 70 Years later, Godzilla (1954) is still the Greatest movie ever made. I still love watching it, To this very day.
This is why the first Gojira movies is a true masterpiece. There are so many hidden deep messages, and possible interpretations for every fan. Unfortunately Legendary Godzilla movies will never even attempt to dwell into those kinds of realistic problems which is kinda sad.
Actually, having Godzilla IRL wouldn't be so bad. We could probably use more nuclear energy with him around to clean up any leaks or messes. To keep him from attacking, we'd just have to locate him and send a nuclear submarine his way for him to feed on before he makes landfall.
best video by far, the breakdown was great! great work Dman! hope you're doing well :P
Thank you!
I noticed some of these ideas a while ago, specifically the comparisons between the oxygen destroyer and nuclear energy, with Serizawa wanting to find a more beneficial use for it rather than using it as a weapon and how it's similar to humanity's use of nuclear energy (with it historically being used as both a power source and as a weapon). I ended up bringing it up once in an online discussion, unfortunately it resulted in other fans getting angry, with them insinuating that I didn't understand the Godzilla franchise. So it's interesting to see other people in the fandom bringing up similar points as well.
Great video Dman, I believe Omni viewer pitched a similar reading during the “is KOTM pro nuke” era, but he didn’t go as in depth as this
Ahhh. So I guess he arrived at this conciliation for the same reason I did. I’ll do a follow-up within the next two weeks on KOTM
What a fantastic analysis. I have always disliked the use of the oxygen destroyer, because it has felt like using a bigger bomb to end the threat of another.
Excellent work D-Man. Very thought-provoking!
Great thought provoking video essay man and I agree. Also even though Japan was devastated by the war shortly after nuclear power really empowered the nation. I think Japan is in the top 5 nations that have the most nuclear power plants. Hence one of the reasons Goji made the country his territory haha
I really like this take, it’s really thoughtful, and I hope future Godzilla films can touch more on this.
Doctor Skipper should have found a way to time travel forward to watch this video in order to write notes on how to conduct a proper film analysis of Godzilla.
lol. I’m a smaller channel, but he isn’t even in my league.
holy moly, absolutely amazing breakdown. this has indeed changed how i view this film.
Wonderful video!
“Do As You Please” 🤔
Its all one massive philosophical debate. That's very much relevant today
I am going to watch this with a whole new perspective. Thank you.
Now, as a mansterverse fan, I can make pretentious minus one fans feel stupid as I explain a more intelligent interpretation of the original Godzilla. Thanks!
lol. You’ve got this!
Mansterverse
I hear Oppenheimer 2023 music
Could you please talk about the shifting tone of King Kong Vs Godzilla? That sure would be interesting.
That's a great topic
@@DMan1954 when will it come out?
Godzilla (1954) and King Kong (1933) were both movies I enjoyed in my youth (in the 60s). But (too many) years later I was thrilled to discover great stories, great acting, and great movies.
As always, thank you so very much for the videos.
I (pre-teen) was also fortunate to visit, and live in, several countries outside my native California, and was fascinated by the different outlooks and feelings about war. This included Australia (Darwin), Tokyo Japan, and Southern England.
this is a very interesting video but i do disagree with the use of the oxygen destroyer being a direct metaphor for the use of the atomic bombs. to me, the message of the oxygen destroyer is that the use of the atomic bomb set us down the path of an endless arms race where more and more powerful weapons keep getting made. the oxygen destroyer only had to be used because the atomic bombs were dropped and woke up godzilla. WMDs necessitate the creation and use of more WMDs. i always saw the main point of the oxygen destroyer being that it came after. i don't think it's a symbol of the nuke.
this is a really thought provoking video though even if i do disagree with some parts
Fair enough. I think it's a pretty direct symbol because the characters are constantly drawing the parallel. They compare the Oxygen Destroyer to the atomic bomb more than they compare Godzilla to the Hydrogen Bomb in the movie. I've always seen it as a representation of how WMDs are part of an endless cycle where they will just keep getting bigger and bigger and worse and worse unless humanity finds more wisdom behind their use and creation.
Okay...there is a problem....the oxygen destroyer isn't some weapon that saved the day. It killed not only Godzilla but the wildlife around it. Not only that Dr.serizawa took his life so this weapon won't be used in the wrong hands like the atomic bombs. The nuke might have ended the war but at a high cost.
I think Shin Godzilla better shows the pro nuclear but it was a we have to live with this instead of being all for it because many even out of Japan believe Nuclear anything is bad and should be ignored.
I think you seem to have misunderstood the video. That’s exactly the same conclusion I came to at the end of the video.
🔥🔥🏆🛡️💯
I feel like you might have over analyzed it a bit, but I do understand some of your points.
What do you think was over analyzed?
I’m not too sure. Because Godzilla strictly as a metaphor for the nuclear bomb doesn’t make any sense. We have a competing symbol for the exact same idea. So it has to be war and the Oxygen Destroyer is the bomb
Mmmmmmm nuclear waste so tasty 😋
First?
Indeed
Is this a joke?
Did you watch the video? Or did you pre-fire the comment?
@@DMan1954would you like to break down the campiness of King Kong vs Godzilla in a future video?
hell naw, it's about how we shouldn't be using nuclear energy as weapons of mass destruction
Your profile is a joke 🤡
