I'm convinced I can make a horror game with 0 clue of what to do and have MattPatt do a video series on it and just have him make up the lore without him knowing.
I would love it if a game developer did that, but instead of going along with theories, they just went the opposite direction. Kinda like FNAF, but intentionally 😂

About cats wanting to cuddle babies: Most domestic cats actually really like children. Modern house cats are descended from an African wildcat that live in colonies and raise kittens communally. So they view babies as human kittens and since cats understand that when a child is asleep it's vulnerable, it tends to snuggle up with them to keep them safe and warm. Not sure if this leads to cats accidentally suffocating babies by just not knowing they're causing problems though.
Matpat has his own adorable cat named Skip so I’m sure he knows cats don’t hate children in reality. It’s just a possible folklore basis for “gassy catty”
or, it makes me wonder if they know something is wrong with the baby and they're trying to heal it, or at least help it pass peacefully as they might a kitten that was dying, since they can't communicate with humans and say "Hey! HEY! Baby needs a doctor now!" There are ofc some cats who instinctively go and yell at the humans when something is wrong, but their parental instincts for their own babies would be to just comfort them, so that could be a factor too.
This specific wording of "steal their breath" reminds me of the thing cats do sometimes, where they will nearly press their nose to a baby's nose, and I heard that its because they're checking to see if the baby is still breathing.
The old folktales basically say that you can’t let cats sleep with babies because they’ll “steal their breath away”, a wives tale my grandmother actually does believe to this day, but the issue is that they basically suffocate them on accident by cuddling with them since they think they’re kittens.
I think that could point to the cat not initially being evil, with exp 1006 being the one taking the kids for his religious/cult reasons, and the cat’s just trying to protect the kids
i really like how poppy playtime is moving itself away from being a horror game primarily aimed at children. i think the target audience of the whole genre of indie horror has been affected by fnaf, bendy, and especially poppy playtime, so it’s really of nice to see the whole thing gear more toward creativity and horror than marketability. i hope the new horror-centric direction is consistent and more indie horror media follows in its example.

@@FriedProfile I dont think the genera deserves to die out, seems a little harsh. I think Mascot horror as a concept is actually cool, its simply the oversaturation and lack of effort and originality put into most of the genera's games thats brining down mascot horror as a whole. I think it has potential tho, but no one is using it to it's fullest, and since everyone just wants to be FNAF 2.0, they all feel samey, rushed, and contrived.
Hopefully this theory doesn't go down the path of matpat actually guessing the plot so accurately that the studio changes the story during the development to surprise fans instead of being lore friendly

There are some other things to note here:
All mascots in this trailer have their head removed or burned/blacked out, even the images of them on the walls attached to the children's pictures. Looking at the angel statue it looks a lot like it is made of heads with the occasional pair of arms here and there. I really think that is important, personally.

MatPat is the only one who can tell me that someone who's being chased by murderous giant toys, ending with their demise is just doing evil and not legitimately protecting themselves.
This is my thought process too. He is just defending himself. Unless more proof is given to us, or we are actively hurting harmless toys with our hands (not the one attacking us), then I think our MC is not the villain here. At least an unknowing antagonist.

I feel like it would much more effective to leave the main points all the same, and add just one small thing different. Just enough to leave the theorizer frustrated that they didn't get it fully right, and the author the satisfaction of having surprised the players.

The cats name is now confirmed! His name is Catnap, and he was originally a member of the “Smiling Critters” toy line, a line to help children sleep.
Catnap was recalled for giving children Nightmares.
Marie’s carer even threatened to remove her from the program because the Red Gas that was given my Catnap gave her Nightmares.

I love how the name "Cat Nap" actually does kinda fit this whole theory.
I wonder what happened to that Councilor, Claire, who wrote the incident report? She seemed fiercely protective over Marie and others in her care. She also didn't seem to know of the sinister side of the experiments, considering that she thought the nightmare Marie had was because of some of the orphan boys picking on her.
She even made a kind of threat in the report about needing to protect "her little girl"

I actually think Claire got turned into kissy! In the new chapter you can find kissy holding a picture of a young girl with a sad expression I think this girl was Marie who got turned into mommy long legs (which was confirmed iirc?) she’s definitely sad as her “little girl” was corrupted and died in the previous chapter which I personally believe makes more sense then her looking at a picture of herself as a child since most of the toys appear to have forgotten about their previous lives

Just depends on what you play. Alot of mascot Horror depends on cheap scares where psychological horror thrives on building a tense atmosphere

MatPat should make his own lore where all 4 channels (film, style, food and game) interact with each other and have a problem that is kind of like the shorts war or if they go against youtube or something like that and the fans have to try to find evidence, links and unlisted videos to try to solve his lore.

This chapter is genuinely horrifying. I had to watch this theory with just audio because I couldn’t risk seeing the faces of the kids again.

I think he's on to something, but I think Poppy will have also have an important role and influence to our character going forward. I have a strong belief that she's the most important character in the game and we should keep a close eye on her. I'm very curious what her role will be in chapter 3.
3:47 it actually started from a mother who killed her baby then lied saying the cat did it by mistake. i searched this up with my brother not to long ago because we were VERY confused on where it started from. there’s only been one case and the case turned out false.
And once again we realize that humanity is the true monster sometimes..
The only issue I have with this video is that Elliott Ludwig isn't the villain and isn't the one who started the "Bigger Bodies Initiative" because we already know that it was *the Doctor* who started the initiative.
He did cover that in a previous theory… so I have absolutely no idea why he didn’t stick to it, maybe Mob Games really did ruin their lore
yes, it is baffling. Why is Elliott working with "Gassy Catty"? he was killed because protested using children as larger test subjects, right? we can see this is true as the prototype took mommy's body and it is now on the body being built. Elliot would never condone toys being killed, too.

I am 99.9% sure and certain that the chapter 3 monster is going to be based off/inspired by the word “Bugbear!” I’m also feeling like that could be its name too! From all the hints and pictures in the teaser, I’m feeling like its going to be a hybrid toy of a bug, probably a moth, and of course a bear.
If you google the definition of the word Bugbear, you’ll see that it states “a cause of obsessive fear, irritation, or loathing.” However, what’s really scary and stands out more is the archaic definition of the word below it. The archaic definition states “an imaginary being invoked to frighten children, typically a sort of hobgoblin supposed to devour them.” As we can see, the monster sprays the red smoke to most likely scare the children and make them hallucinate, or to just put them to sleep at least.
So if it’s not a literal bugbear, than its a hobgoblin. However, this of course is just my personal theory and I could be very wrong, but it just feels so right 😂 Plus, I have no idea if anybody else has made this theory up yet or come to this conclusion for what the monster could be. If so, great minds think a like😁

That would have been really cool! But its Catnap! One of the critters, A really messed up version. Original catnap had clear mist and smelled like lavender, but our monsterous catnap has red sleepy gas and doesnt smell at all like lavender

I think the protagonist is there to shut ALL of it down. To make sure none of what went on in the factory comes to light, which is why they responded to the message from Ch. 1. There are survivors that need to be silenced and now Elliot that needs to be dealt with.
Honestly, yeah. Nobody is a hero in this situation. Only innocent ones are the kids that are likely slaughtered and manipulated by the prototype.

As me writing this as chapter is out, he was PRETTY accurate, im honestly surprised, but i have theory, i think math went INTO the future saw chapter 3, then came back and got some of it wrong by purpose so no one finds out, BUT I DID, but thats just a GAM- wait, uhhhhh, that's just a COMMENT
Personally, I think the new monster could be a sorta swap-a-mal between a Bear or a cat mixed with an owl, considering owls are associated with nightime and sleep, even having a metaphor (I think its a metaphor) A “Night Owl” Maybe the monster in chapter 3 is more active at midnight, being a cat swap-a-mal monster is too repetitive, so maybe the Bear combined with an owl could be a possible answer.

Honestly I'm pretty hyped for it. Even with the whole cat baby thing, I have never heard of those kinds of legends, and I'm glad matpat taught me about it.
Dude, this is (almost) *exactly* what I theorized when the trailer first came out! I feel so validated, from the main Big Bad being a religious/cult leader to the the possibility of the toys creating their own twisted community.
I really like the theme Poppy Playtime is heading towards, and I am beyond ecstatic as to learn more about the toy cult!
I know I'm late, but I highly recommend you watch the smiling critters vhs tape. A WHOLE bunch is revealed about who the monster is. Take a looksie if you can.

This theory is unbelievably close to what we know about CatNap so far (pre-release of Chapter 3)
Superstitions usually come from the most mundane places; I remember hearing my local curling club was "haunted" because stones would sometimes appear to drift away on their own or veer off their paths, but that just sounds like bad upkeep with ice that isn't level or patches of dirt or salt scuffing a shot

What a great thumbnail to read just as I was about to go to bed. Thanks alot MatPat! Now I know that I shouldn't go to sleep.
Well, I recently saw someone who had trouble breathing in their sleep, and they set up a camera to find out why, and they discovered their cat was laying on top of them while they were sleeping, restricting their breathing. I wouldn't be surprised if cats had done the same thing to babies, only for the babies to not be able to breath at all because the cat's like their entire body weight at that age.

06:03 the text you showed says somniferous means it makes other things sleepy. So Gassy Catty is saying his flock make things fall asleep, rather than that they're being forcibly put to sleep. That suggests he might have minions who also produce the poppy gas
I think it is interesting that for the kid who is scared of Catty, the one who gets nightmares, they are drawn in green, while the stick figures following Catty are drawn in red/black.
I think it would be interesting to see matpats theory on A Stereotypical Obby and REPLEH COUNTY ARCHIVES (on roblox, but despite the names thay both connect and have lore)
I originally thought after seeing the second trailer that there would be two main antagonists: the purple cat, and then another monster who cleans up the cat’s mess, being the metal amalgamation who rakes up the pieces and fuses it to itself.
Had to pause and come post this after Mat said "Gassy Catty" cause the obvious name that he should have used was Sleepy Kitty. It fits theamatically and doesn't sound as silly for a villain in a horror game. Will return after finishing the video to give my thoughts on the whole thing.
Alright, finished the video, and asfar as the actual theory goes I'd say it makes sense. Definitatly getting some vibes from a certain horror game with animatronics that I won't say the name of. Based on the evidence we have seen thus far makes me think Mat has the right idea on this one. Will be interesting to see where it goes from here.
Back again, just found out that the characters name is CatNap and I honestly don't know whether to roll my eyes at the pun or praise the suffering it generates.
