ABOUT UPROXX INDIE MIXTAPE:
Indie Mixtape is the go-to for all things indie music. We serve as a funnel to make sure that only the best music -- new and old -- is delivered directly to the people who care the most.
Indie is more than a music genre. It's a sensibility. The indie fan may be overlooked in our current cultural climate, but they're alive and well -- going to see live music, visiting art galleries, and prioritizing substance over facade. This is for you.
"I was made with a heart of stone, to be broken with one hard blow, I've seen the ocean break on the shore, come together with no harm done"...has to be one of the greatest lyrics of all time!!
Come together with no harm done...
It ain't easy living...
and...
No one tries no one pulls you
Out from your hole
Like a tooth aching a jawbone...
This version of the song is perfect. It’s perfect how the intro runs with the clip of Dave. I love this band so much. It really hurts that this time is over.
That says it all. Nature is brutal because that's nature- humans are so much worse. The human strain- a returning plague.
"No talking, man, all action"
Yes!!!!!!!!
This whole song is filled with mantra one liners...
Quite possibly the most under rated band of all time. These guys were ahead of everyone back then.
Absolutely true.
Omg so friggin true.
Yep. Jane's started the Alternative movement
I love Jane's Addiction...and they were ahead of their time,no doubt...are they the best band? No...no such thing exist...now Built to Spill is a different story...you guys ever heard of Built to Spill?
They're the BEST BAND EVER! LOL
they're still ahead of the groove
I saw them in small clubs before they went big time. Greatest shows ever.
They played at the dollar theater in downtown Vacaville CA
I saw them in. High school gymnasium back in ‘92
Man, that musta been fuckin tremendous!
@@andypagano6545 They were huge in '92 . Either you are lying or it was a very special event.
the Stone Balloon in Newark Delaware is where I saw them first !! One of the best shows EVER
I saw Janes with Soundgarden and Mother Lovebone 1988 at the Paramount in Seattle!..........tickets were 4 dollars.
Lucky Devil!
😭 NOT FAIR!!! 😭
It’s a crime they are not being inducted in the rock n roll hall of fame.
It’ll take some time, but they’ll definitely be in there. Honestly.? I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t want to belong to any club that would have them as a member; kinda like a real punk rock band like Nirvana wanted to be known as. Understand,? Opened up for them both back in the days before anyone knew them.1988+ 1991 Cambridge and Boston Massachusetts Amerikkka of course ❤ Sincerely, DJP Anal Cunt; Postmortem and Kilslug Sony; Earache 🇬🇧 Columbia and TAANG!! I'm 52 - this is one of the best bands of ALL TIME
Tengo 54 y me compré Ritual de lo Habitual con mi primer sueldo
The lyrics and the lifestyle...artists long-gone now. The darkness of their original 3 albums demonstrates an honesty that has passed from popular music now. Kids making "sounds" on phones and tablets. Love this documentation-"Cash in now, honey..."
Yeah great band. But you don’t really care. You don’t care about Perry Farrell’s life or his feelings. You were on that Magic Johnson basketball hype penis before you got AIDS. Then you thought “ooo weird LA famous band guy penis…” Ooo so exotic. But you don’t care. You wh0re!
You don’t care. You were on that basketball hype donkey until you got bored and with diseases. Then you wanted “weird LA band guy” hype horse. Ya so exotic. Big Chief Wompum. But you don’t care. You don’t care about Perry Farrell’s feelings or what he’s been through. You cockroaches!
I’m right.
for all you young kids just discovering this band...You have NO IDEA what it was like when music like this first hit the scene. You never will. But we old gen x types welcome you to enjoy.
Perry Farrell is some kind of prophet - remember, perceived lunacy is basically a prerequisite for prophethood.
Perkins is a legendary drummer that never gets enough credit.
And Navarro never sounded better than he did on these first two JA’s albums.
This band, their sound, and their legacy has aged better than most of their era.
Miss discovering music like this, miss seeing musicians like this, miss being music like this
This song is about 30 years old,but it sounds so contemporary.
I guess the correct term is timeless.
It's a great song, but no, it sounds nothing like today's music.Today's music is all computerized beats and autotune and electro-pop.
@@johnd5931 the medium always changes
This song is almost thirty years old and still sounds so contemporary.
Janes belongs in the rrhof. So fn good
40 years old 🎅🏼
I wasn't around back then, but it must've been so fucking cool and fresh to see a new band like Jane's Addiction after years and years of bullshit like Poison, Ratt, Def Leppard, Cinderella, Dokken, etc.
That is absolutely true
Hold on! Some of those bands are good too!
@@demetertresa Not as good as Jane's Addiction!
Nothing's Shocking and Ritual de lo Habitual are perfect albums in my opinion. 🔥
Jane’s Addiction was an acquired taste for me. Wasn’t until I started playing guitar that I was able to really appreciate them. Definitely one of the most underrated bands out there. These are the guys who would eventually influenced Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament to go start Pearl Jam. They made a Huge impact on the whole 90s rock scene.
Jane's Addiction's was the bridge between 80s hair bands and 90s grunge.
Yup and it's so fucking beautiful
I hear elements of many different eras and genres of rock/metal. You can definitely hear the end of 80s hair and the beginning of the Grunge explosion. I'll be honest, I think it has a lot to do with Dave's guitar playing.
That’s exactly what I was thinking when I heard this song for the first time this week!
Along with Mother Love Bone, yes, absolutely!
Between ratt and STP
Imagine being 16 and hearing this song when it was released. I was impressed.
I was 17 when this song came out.
I was 15. One of my favorite bands. Still listen to them today. Tool is the best tho.
I was 17 and it blew my mind.
Imagine being 40 and still just as impressed...oh wait...that went fast!
I was the same age and hearing their first album (the live demo one b4 "Nothing Shocking" that a lot of people don't seem to count as an album), when I say it changed my life, I'm not even remotely exaggerating.
My love for Jane’s Addiction knows no boundaries.
This is a very special band for me and my circle of friends. Still extremely relevant in my adult life. Peace and love to everyone from Houston, TX. - Jon :-)
same
Your not alone on that one.
Well said from Sugar Land, Tx.
I started listening to Jane's about 7-8 years ago and I was quite obsessed with the band at that time. Still sometimes like to listen them occasionally and this song has a special meaning to me. Peace and love from Croatia.
back at choo, brother
This band went off like a bomb in my life when I needed it most.
Heard them for the first time working at Club Metro in '89 on a cassette in a boom box in the kitchen. I was embarrassed to ask who they were so I kept trying to look through the smoked cassette box. I went to the record store and couldn't find it so I asked for the band Jane's (they never heard of them), told them I think the album was called 'Addiction', he said, 'oh, Jane's Addiction... we got that!'. I felt like a fool at that moment but within a few months I was a seasoned Jane's Addiction fan. Nothing mattered but friends and music back then.
That's still what matters to me the most- even at 65
Wish I was ocean size
They cannot move you
No one tries no one pulls you
Out from your hole
Like a tooth aching a jawbone...
I was made with a heart of stone
To be broken
With one hard blow
I've seen the ocean
Break on the shore
Come together with no harm done...
It ain't easy living...
I want to be
As deep
As the ocean
Mother ocean
Some people tell me
Home is in the sky
In the sky lives a spy
I want to be more like the ocean
No talking

No talking

Dave Navarro is such a badass 😅
Lots of footage from their stint at the Hollywood Palladium during the Ritual tour. After those shows I had to sleep for a day or two just to recover. Man, I miss the 1990's. The last truly rocking decade.
I was there too! The Birkenstock Incident lol
Eddie Graham Sports Stadium, Lakeland Florida!
Epic!!!! Class of 89 still rockin'. Psytrance too.
Gen X rules😁
@@FromBeyond99 def footage from all the nights at the palladium

BrandtArt66 I disagree man we still have good rock you got dig deeper in your search for modern music I’m telling ya we got some bangers now a days but the good ones don’t seem to get as much attention rap,hip hop, and pop steal the spotlight

Stephen is such a kickass drummer.
One of the best bands that’s ever existed. These guys are the shit.
I’m aware of how cliche/dorky it is, but “Nothing’s Shocking” had a serious impact on my teenage years.
I can’t articulate how grateful I am for Jane’s Addiction.
That was the real end of hair metal. period.
and I was a hip hop fan, but my best friend Brett turned me on to them
you're right. that was dorky.
Nah janes addiction are legends
Only ppl who think that is dorky are kooks
Yeah, I do my part by not watching porn.
No bands are doing rock like this anymore that remain relevant for decades, let alone the rest of music history. Love Janes, and this cd was the one that turned me onto them. Spun it a million times, and never got sick of it.
steve arbogast Ever heard of a band called Oceansize. Yes, they're named after this song. They broke up in 2010 but they're still relevant.
@kkh369 Haha you're right
Not successful to the level of Janes, but I would put Warrior Soul (the first 3 albums) and I Mother Earth (especially the first two albums) in with Janes. Both bands unfortunately changed with lineup changes.
@@kitoyobeni1 Warrior Soul is hugely underrated indeed
Ty Segall and Courtney Barnett are good modern (rock) musicians, but yeah, no one nearly as good as Jane's these days!
What a timeless classic,
Gives me inspiration.
Come together with no harm done,
Now if only humanity could do the same.
Give it a rest
Perry was a true, electric, eclectic art rock individual in the same category as Iggy and Bowie. Sound + Energy + Vision. Just saw them at Life Is Beautiful, but nothing can match the sheer performance power of the early days.
Lou Reed .
When he was young enough to go full animal on stage 😌
1st song on nothing's shocking. absolutely blew me away and still does 30 years later.
2nd. Up The Beach is first
Awesome jam 36 years later. I was made from a heart of stone. Still sounds better than todays stuff
We sure had fun back in the day.
Boom! 🧚♂️
Still do!
my mom went to lollapalooza '91 pregnant with me and saw them then i saw them in denver a few years ago so they r VERY near and dear to my heart!!!!!!
+Isadora Savage Your Mom is very cool and my oldest was also born in 91'.(he has the same bday as Layne Staley 8/22) and we took him to Lolla in 93'
Rochelle Eskue fuck ya thats awesome!!! I dont have the same birthday as anyone rad but my mom named me Nina after Nina Hagen then german punk chick from the 80s so thats gotta count for something lol
Absolutely it counts. It's always cool when there's a story behind the name. :-))
That's great!! 😄
Great story.
Really glad we didn't lose Perry to heroin addiction.
yes!!
navarro too
I thought I read Avery had a drinking problem at one point. It's sort of a miracle that all members are still alive today...
lost him to vanity instead
I swear there's not a day that goes by I dont think about this

Over 66.
Remember when music was still good?
One of the greatest live bands ever!

THE OCEAN!!!
Twenty years ago when I had a system in my car I loved to put this song on at red lights next to an unsuspecting people and let the bass hit. Now I am older I still love to to that.
That would be so much fun. What if you could pull beside an older person and they could see the video that would really freak them out. I love it. I love them but especially Danv
That would be so much fun. What if you could pull beside an older person and they could see the video that would really freak them out. I love it. I love them but especially Dave Narvaro.
Assemble another system! I had a Rockford Power 300 serving highs and bass in '92. I thought I'd try an install these days as it's always been something I loved...and discovered I still do.
Selfish. Enjoy scaring people?
@@judyhinegardner6801 juvenile.
My favorite alltime Dave Navarro guitar, he was absolutely sick on this. His technical skills, use of effect pedals, combo of power rhythm & soloing, all of it. Though he and J Mascis had very different styles, both were groundbreaking at the time in creating new heavy guitar soundscapes
(And btw Dave and Avery kissing in this as well as the Mountain Song vid was so far beyond latter 80s norms there isn't even a comparison to other JA controversies. The various outrages over Perry's artwork, album cover scandals, drugs, and bondage clothing all combined still don't come close to just how trangressive those kisses were for the era.)
So well said! I was thinking the same thing regarding the kiss. Putting that kind of sexual openness and fluidity out there, b/w 2 men, in such a huge way for so many to see just wasn’t done in the late 80’s or early 90’s. It would’ve been scandalous news for sure!
@@arusso961 yeah, those kisses were so transgressive at the time that some types couldn't even talk bring themselves to talk about it. The ever increasing awareness of AIDS set off a wave of extreme homophobia, while the "War on Drugs" campaign was in full swing as was the right wing frenzy about lyric warnings and banning sales. Jane's Addiction not only represented pretty much everything that those types hated, but they flaunted it as well. And those kisses were the ultimate of all their statements against the Reagan era tides
I moved from NYC to Malibu the year this record came out...I played it til the needle broke...I met Jane , the Jane many years later...We both walked right up to each other like we were old friends ..Then her little entourage scurried her away...I will never forget it ..So it goes...Greatest band in a sea of great L.A. bands...
Definitely their best most underrated and appreciated song. Sounds like a hybrid of the 70s 80s and 90s that we all love. They didn't ever get enough love.
It's one of those that requires the intro tho. Like, I don't want to hear Wrathchild without hearing Ides of March first.
I've loved, loved, loved this song. I've sung it to the top of my lungs! One of the best ever written.
One of a kind band. Just awesome.
I've loved this band for decades and this song is 1 of my favourites
It doesn’t get much better than this record
Truth!
They managed to get a sound that so many others tried and failed at. Bombastically loud speaker crushing rock with all the intricate details intact. I've listened to this on high end equipment (sorry dad!) and it was amazing how much was going on. Add Nothing's Shocking to your "must hear on vinyl" list.
Nothing Shocking would definitely be better on vinyl..or tape. I can hear muted drum notes on a lot of Perkins' fills. They faded certain notes back to make the drum fill sound differently. You can only hear it when it's in digital form.
From being up front for many shows, I have always felt that this is Perry and Dave's favorite song to play together.. and this has been a encore in a few of the last.
When music was really alive.
eric avery is one of the most underestimated bassist there is
I think Flea is playing bass on this song. :)
Nope. Flea plays on 2 songs on Kettle Whistle, both newly recorded songs. One was new, the other never recorded. This is a demo version of a song from Nothing's Shocking.
And Stephen is one of the most underrated drummers
Eric Avery played the greatest bass lines when he was with Jane's Addiction! He used to come into my work in the early 90's...He stole some sunglasses one time! There is no fucking way I would have ever said a fucking thing! After all his cousin was one of my best friends! When I told her that Eric came in and shoplifted a pair of sunglasses right in front of me ...She laughed and said Well Been Caught Stealing!
@@briancrainakacain9780 Thank you for sharing that, it brought a smile to my face for the first time today.

In my estimation Jane’s Addiction was the FINAL culmination Of all the rock ‘n’ roll that had come before them, That was it, sharp decline, rock ‘n’ roll is officially over 2019.
Certainly the tripping-est band of the 80s! I was so fortunate to see them at The Scream in LA. NO sleep for days afterwards.
No talk man, all action.....
-GenX
What a great band, song, and video. Game changers.
authenticvegas Indeed. They defined the alternative rock/metal genres.
Started being obsessed with them when I was a street rat in LA and used to go to THE SCREAM all the time and they were the house band
My favorite Jane's addiction song
this came out when i was 20 the best song ever
Love from India. Absolutely love JA !!!!!!

Perry Farrell can surf. He can sing. He can do endless amounts of drugs. And he does them all well.
jane's got the ball rolling. before them music was highly categorized. record stores were all organized by genre/sub-genre/sub-sub-genre/••• (metal/thrash/...) then came nothing's shocking & they didn't have a category so at first it just sat at the end of the aisle on display with the weird burny naked mannequin ladies on the cover & then the stores just went back to alphabetizing everything under rock, rap, country again. then came pumpkins, then came nirvana. don't get it twisted kids. janes was a revolution in 87 or 88 or whenever that was.
It's just rock and roll and great, at that
Happy 63rd Birthday Perry Farrell. Peretz Bernstein was born March 29, 1959. Queens, New York. This is a bitter sweet birthday for Perry. He considered Taylor Hawkins as one of his best friends. Many, many more Peretz Bernstein. Cheers..
Ahh THE GREAT OL' DAYS alt-rock!!! God bless you Jane's Addiction! They just don't make bands like like this anymore!
+Niroshan Fernando keep searching, theres many ;)
Alex Moreton Oh for sure sir! The Cult and Jane's Addiction are my two favorite alt rock 80s / 90s bands. Not surprising, that Perry Farrell got his idea for Lollapalooza from Ian Astbury's Gathering Of The Tribes Festival! :-D
@kkh369 You have to dig because rock music isn't in the mainstream, but there are still real rock bands out there somewhere hiding.
@kkh369 Yeah. Sometime within the last 7-8 years record producers and promoters chose to instead push pop and rap instead of rock. I don't know why they changed their focus, but what sells is what's being pushed by record companies.
Perry just out here being one of the coolest people on the planet like it's nothing 🤷🏼♂️
