Here's a funny anecdote for you. There's actually a major latino community that's crazy about hockey and it's Nicaraguans. Before Auston Matthews, Bill Guerin, a Nicaraguan guy, was the only player of notable, well note, of Latino descent in the NHL, so a lot of Nicaraguans were able to watch NHL games because with him and Denis Martinez in baseball, it was one of the only sports shown on TVs during the rebuilding period in the country. As well as something for a lot of Nicaraguans in the community. Nicaraguans also are a pretty sizable population in Miami as well as the major hockey broadcaster in LatAm is Nicaraguan. So there's actually a huge contingent of people in Miami that are crazy about hockey because that and baseball were like THE sport for them for a long time. Especially the Panthers i.e all the craziness that was happening on the streets after the cup were the Nicas in town hitting it up.
Outdoor roller hockey year round really helped push the sport in the 90s and early 00s. Park by my house had 8 outdoor rinks that had non stop games and practices all year round. No need for winter to love hockey anymore 🤷♂️
Actually, the sunbelt is the region of hockey at least in this decade. They were in the Finals every year, winning 4 of the past 5 Finals including the cats. Last year was the first ever all sunbelt Stanley Cup Final. So it's a great time to be a fan of hockey in the region
As an Orlando native, I can say Florida isn't a hockey state. But the fans will show up for a winner, and the Lightning have shown that. The Panthers were dog crap bad for the majority of their existence, but the fans will come. I live in Arizona now, there are Coyote fans out here. They're just a really bad franchise, one that got kicked out of their arena, and they've never been good enough to draw support. Now they're going to Utah. So no, Florida isn't a hockey state, but neither is California, Texas, Nevada, or Colorado. But all those states have Stanley Cup Champions . Canada loves hockey, but even those people don't show up to Winnipeg, Ottawa, or Vancouver when they suck.
Vegas is a hockey city though, they LOVE their golden knights! And Canadians WILL show up to teams even when they're not doing well, just look at the Leafs and the Habs, both aren't that great but average Sell outs every single game
@@coastaku1954That's not how that works. You guys didn't have to suffer terrible teams at the outset. When the Panthers first started in the Miami Arena it would get packed. A couple years after the 1996 Stanley Cup run, we crapped the bed. We'd been floundering around for a majority of that time with terrible owners and GMs ever since. When Vegas starts to tank, then we can revisit how strong your fanbase is.
As an Orlando resident who is a transplant from Colorado, respectfully, you may have been right once but you’re wrong now. Florida may not have always been a hockey spot but it damn sure is now…and I’m way glad about it. Cheers to our ever growing family of fans of the best game ever. ❤️
Also, if you’re saying Colorado isn’t a hockey state? Maybe take a trip there and do some research. You might find that you’re patently hilariously wrong. 😉
@dennislopez1272 Um... I'm a Leafs fan that likes Vegas as a second team, don't doubt those fans. They did miss the playoffs one year yet still did well attendance wise because they have a good product and proved how great Hockey is. That city is full of Golden Knights signs, license plates, merchandise, even casino employees wear Golden Knights jerseys
In Canada, fans see their team as their local favorite team. In south Florida, fans see the Panthers as family. You have to live in south Florida to understand this concept. It’s very different. I’ve lived in Florida back in ‘96 to early 2000’s. And I’m now living in NYC. The way panther fans identifies the panthers team is extremely different in south Florida compared to large market and Canadian teams.
No state income tax. Would you rather make 9 million and pay 30% takes or 8 million and pay no tax. That is why Vegas is doing well too. And why Canadian teams have no chance.
it's that but it's also the pressure. It's so much nicer when someone like Barkov can just enjoy his beach house in peace compared to someone like McDavid getting harassed just buying a pack of beer
Doesn’t Florida have a lower tax rate than most other hockey states? Makes sense for good players to move out to sunrise or Tampa. Especially if there’s a very good chance at making the postseason without any of the added pressure that comes from playing up north.
To a certain extent. However, I think the culture of both the Panthers and Lightening are the real selling point. Players want to play for the franchises because they have a reputation for looking after players.
Minnesota has produced 300 NHL players, by far the most out of any state. Needless to say, American hockey wouldn't be what it is today without Minnesota. Yes, Florida as of late, has been on top of the hockey world but the NHL as a whole should be EXTREMELY grateful to how the state of Minnesota has developed such strong talent. But sure, call Florida the current "State of Hockey" even though 90% of their population doesn't know how to ice skate.
I’m a panthers fan a Southern hockey fan but most importantly a hockey fan and it does annoy me hearing the “hockey doesn’t belong in the south” or “Florida fans don’t care” bs but I hope this cup win proves it can work with good WELL VETTED ownership and maby this time if they Atlanta they can find owners who give a shit and what there doing
@@EveryoneIsAnIdiotExceptForMe it was bad ownership folks in Atlanta want hockey but they want it with good ownership hockey can work anywhere (because it’s the best sport) but if you have the worst ownership it’ll kill your franchise just look at the yotes they where killed by ownership everyone hated or look at the jets a small market team with ownership with passion and love for the city and sport and that rubs off on the fans good ownership makes a world of difference
BTW, I think Halifax, Nova Scotia out in the Atlantic provinces should get an NHL team. A half a million people is a decent enough market for attendance and revenue.
South Floridian native here, yeah we might not have the best fan base when it comes to the panthers but the thing is the Panthers are the only sports franchise right now here in the south the are actually doing good. The Dolphins get first rounded and so does the Heat. The Marlins are just trash and they need to move to Ft. Lauderdale. The Miami Hurricanes are good but haven’t won since 2001 in their prime era. And I don’t even keep up with inner Miami. So therefore, most of our teams have been irrelevant so having one good team, which is the panthers makes us happy because we can celebrate one good team down here.
To me, Tampa (though they do need to make a few moves) and Florida are just better than everyone else The only team that threatens them really is Vegas and then maybe Dallas if they figure themselves out which I doubt they will, while everyone else are in need of franchise shifting moves or rebuilds (like the rushed rebuild Rangers)
They dont realize that we got so much pro sports and college team in the State.. There's variety unlike those sports city with 1 or 2 pro and college teams.. Down here in Miami alone. We got the: PRO-Heat, Dolphins, Marlins, Panthers College- UM, FSU, UF, USF, UCF, FAU, BCU, FAMU Lo of us aren't going to attend every single game. Hell you guys don't know how much a pain in the ass just to go on I-95 on a daily basis down here. 😂Well we dont care what yall think about us anyway. Keep Hating👍🏾✌🏾
Over the last few years, we also got F1 racing down by Miami. Florida will spare no expense in terms of giving people a reason to come out and party. No one in Miami would have cared about LeBron James or Andrew Tkachuk if the Heat or the Panthers respectively weren't planted there. I can also bet you that no one really cared in Miami about Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen until the Miami GP came along 3 years ago. Even then, the sports also have to compete with the other parts of the tourism industry; Florida has beaches in the neighborhood of the Heat, UM, and USF while Disney World sits in the neighborhood of UCF and the Magic. If you build it, they will come.
When I lived in Florida, my town was mostly made up of people who moved from the northern US (NY, PA, MI & MN) and Canada (mostly ON). So, while they may have still been a fan of their original "hometown" team, their children & grandchildren grew up with other teams (TB & FL) to watch that they consider their respective "hometown" team.
Arizona would be a great hockey area, but the Coyotes had terrible ownership over its 28-year history in the greater Phoenix area. It is absurd to claim the hockey cannot be successful in a warm climate or in the "desert" when three of the last five Stanley Cups have been won by teams from near-tropical Florida, and one Stanley Cup was won by the Vegas Golden Knights, located in an even drier desert climate than Phoenix.

Ugh. It kills me that the Panthers won. Another expansion team to get the Cup before the Sharks did. Great series, though. It's been a nightmare, for me, being that it's been the Panthers, Knights, and Lightning winning, recently. If it's not the Sharks or Flyers (My team before the Sharks existence) give me Bruins, Canadians, Red Wings, Oilers, Rangers etc. etc.
I mean. I said it from day 1. Bettman was never going to let a Canadian team win. We all knew it. If he had his way he’d have gunned down McDavid on the ice in game 6 just for risking it getting close.
The failure of the Coyotes is ridiculous considering how the fanbase there invested in the team and sport. For them to be let down by bad ownership group after bad ownership group is a travesty.
Southern hockey matters. Thanks for recognizing it. It does no good to the sport we all love if people outside of Florida snootily gatekeep it-let it spread. It’s here. It has BEEN here. 3 cups in four years? no way. The Wings could not pull of a dynasty when they dominated for years, what makes you think the Panthers can. The Lightning didn't.
Except it's not because there are no players from Florida. The only reason why Florida has "Good" teams is because of their lack of Taxes. They can sign superstars for lower, load up their teams, and then go on runs with no pressure cause not many people know about hockey in that State
Florida has produced a few good players, like Jack and Quinn Hughes, Shayne Gostisbere, Jakob Chychrun, and Dallas Eakins. I mean, I understand that's not all that many compared to other states or provinces in Canada, but that isn't exactly nothing, and to be fair, it's more than just tax breaks: Good weather, huge tourism market, and a much lighter media presence that mostly leaves the players to their own devices unless something big comes up or they're in the playoffs.

Florida is not a great place. It's Oklahoma but next to the ocean. More than 30 percent is an actual, true to life swamp. The other 70 percent is filled with mouth breathers like you who give the state a bad name. Pacific Ocean > Atlantic Ocean. Mediterranean Sea > Gulf of Mexico. The world is a big place, and Florida isn't a filet mignon destination.
Florida is a not a hockey state. What an absurd statement. Nobody is playing hockey in Florida, even the Canadians that move down there. Teams located in their borders are just very good right now. As a result, fans love Tampa and Florida right now. But, lets not kids ourselves here. The fans only care because the NHL teams are elite right now and winning championships. Once the Bolts and Panthers sink into mediocrity again, the fans will stop caring. Hockey is just the current fad. This isnt just in hockey. Florida in general just isnt loyal towards any of its teams. Dolphins, Jaguars, Bucs, Heat, Rays, Marlins all have shaky attendance history. Minnesota and Michigan are still the states of hockey. The Bolts and Panthers wouldnt have won anything if not for outside talent from Canada, northern states, and Europe.
Just because some teams in Florida won the cup does not make the them the state of hockey😂 compare Florida hockey culture to places where hockey has rich culture like Minnesota, Michigan, and northern New England states. Wait once they will start losing again in a few years from now and they’ll be back with 3000 fans in attendance. In those kind of markets, the arena has spectators only when they win. At least in the real hockey market they have big crowds at the game even when they have losing seasons!
The issue is you can’t expect a team in a brand new hockey market to go nearly 25 years with nothing to show and expect people to come in droves, that’s brain dead room temperature IQ thinking. So there's actually a huge contingent of people in Miami that are crazy about hockey because that and baseball were like THE sport for them for a long time. Especially the Panthers
i.e all the craziness that was happening on the streets after the cup were the Nicas in town hitting it up.
@@hahayeahokaynope its really funny seeing dudes in oversized Guerin devils sweaters walking around 80 degree heat in Managua
Tbh I am a huge panthers fan and I think the florida tax situation is very helpful in allowing the cats and bolts to actually sign the players we do.
Yes it is. The hockey state. Put it in the record books
They have no income tax. Same with Dallas, Nashville and Vegas
@@beeaggro2593 Ditto for Seattle.
Why would players move to a state that is openly homophobic and transphobic
Atlanta lost 2 teams because Atlanta is not a hockey city
@@EveryoneIsAnIdiotExceptForMe it was bad ownership folks in Atlanta want hockey but they want it with good ownership hockey can work anywhere (because it’s the best sport) but if you have the worst ownership it’ll kill your franchise just look at the yotes they where killed by ownership everyone hated or look at the jets a small market team with ownership with passion and love for the city and sport and that rubs off on the fans good ownership makes a world of difference
Yes but somehow there is barely any outdoor rinks in Florida
BTW, I think Halifax, Nova Scotia out in the Atlantic provinces should get an NHL team. A half a million people is a decent enough market for attendance and revenue.
That would be cool, what would they be called?
You’re not wrong. Any province that can produce Sid, Marchand, and Nate should really be in contention for a team.
To me, Tampa (though they do need to make a few moves) and Florida are just better than everyone else
The only team that threatens them really is Vegas and then maybe Dallas if they figure themselves out which I doubt they will, while everyone else are in need of franchise shifting moves or rebuilds (like the rushed rebuild Rangers)
funny you basically outside Nashville, also mentioned all the taxless teams
Minnesota is the Hockey state because they produce the most talent
They dont realize that we got so much pro sports and college team in the State.. There's variety unlike those sports city with 1 or 2 pro and college teams..
Down here in Miami alone. We got the:
PRO-Heat, Dolphins, Marlins, Panthers
College- UM, FSU, UF, USF, UCF, FAU, BCU, FAMU
Lo of us aren't going to attend every single game.
LET'S GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!
Now this is the case to bring the NHL back to Arizona
Arizona would be a great hockey area, but the Coyotes had terrible ownership over its 28-year history in the greater Phoenix area. It is absurd to claim the hockey cannot be successful in a warm climate or in the "desert" when three of the last five Stanley Cups have been won by teams from near-tropical Florida, and one Stanley Cup was won by the Vegas Golden Knights, located in an even drier desert climate than Phoenix.

If it's not the Sharks or Flyers (My team before the Sharks existence) give me Bruins, Canadians, Red Wings, Oilers, Rangers etc. etc.
It could always be worse. The Maple Leafs still haven't reached the Stanley Cup Finals since 1966. At least the Sharks have that.
I mean. I said it from day 1. Bettman was never going to let a Canadian team win. We all knew it. If he had his way he’d have gunned down McDavid on the ice in game 6 just for risking it getting close.

It does no good to the sport we all love if people outside of Florida snootily gatekeep it-let it spread.

No.
