I’m an X5 guy, I would never think of a Highlander, but the Palisade is a game changer.. I have noticed an Asian brand of SUV for the first time …. Kia-Hyundai- Genesis move over Toyota and Nissan…. Mercedes and BMW beware…. I’m a Mercedes-BMW owner for more than 25 years… BTW Hyundai has hired the best of the Germans to design their cars…. Hats of to them.
i love the 2021 Toyota Highlander Limited Hybrid it has lots of features and i look at it in person very nice space inside and a luxury caramel color for the seats.
One issue that was left out... The Palisade is several inches wider than the Highlander making it more difficult to pilot into a garage space. Our garage is 93 inches wide and the Palisade can only clear that by 1 - 2 inches. For this reason we chose the Highlander.
I have owned both a Toyota and Hyundai for several years. The Corolla still runs amazingly well after a decade with little to no maintenance and with a 100K more KMs than my Hyundai. My Santa Fe just has not aged that well with repairs every year to the engine and wheel bearings, etc.. We like our Santa Fe, but while Toyotas cost more upfront they pay you back several times over the long term.
I've been bouncing between the Palisade and Highlander Hybrid Platinum. The Hybrid gas mileage versus the Palisade 21 mpg is a big difference, plus some Highlander dealers give more than $4K off the sticker and another $1500 additional until May 3rd. The nearby Hyundai dealers are charging "market price" above the MSRP. I loved the Palisade, but paying $5000 over the price of the top hybrid Highlander makes it not worth going to the Palisade.
@@JohnLee-db9zt idk about that I got a palisade and a Toyota but I see way more highlanders than palisades I do see many palisades it’s just over all Toyota is more popular
Gentlemen , I want to point out that the Hyundai test was done around 86 F. The Toyota had snow on the roof. Iam assuming that the temp difference was about 40 degrees F. I think that should be taken into consideration
A word about reliability and resale. In terms of reliability Toyota and Lexus routinely rank at the top of brand ratings. But "ranks" tells one nothing about the actual incidence of reliability issues. No more than a second place in a horse race tells you whether the horse lost by a nose or 17 lengths. In fact the actual incidence of significant reliability problems among vehicles from different brands is minuscule with well over 90% of new vehicle buyers never experiencing a single significant issue in over 8 years of ownership. As far as resale is concerned, differences depend to a large extent on a vehicle's age. For example, in 2012 I purchased a top trim KIA Sorento. Six years later I traded it for a new Sorento and received within $800 of the KBB estimated trade-in price for a comparable 2012 Highlander. But I purchased the Sorento for about $6000 less than the best offer I received from a dealer for the Highlander. A little 3rd grad arithmetic reveals that I saved over $5000 by purchasing, driving, and selling the Sorento.
Yet Toyota fan girls constantly use Toyota resale value as the main reason for getting a Toyota over other car brands, especially Hyundai. The old days of Toyota resale and reliability are pretty much gone.
I will never touch a Toyota with a four cylinder again. Yes, they are still reliable, but in terms of refinement, once you go with a V6 Toyota, it is wayyyyyy better and MUCH more refined.
It really depends on which 4 cylinder. the 2.5L 4 cylinder on the 2012-17 Camry and 2013-2018 rav4 was very smooth and. Refined for what it is. The 2018 and newer 2.5L I4 dynamic force engine is unrefined and noisy that I’ll agree
@@naveenthemachine Nahhh, still disagree, sorry. In terms of four cylinder refinement, Honda hands down is much better than Toyota. The Toyotas 4 cylinder sounds more rough and buzzy. But once you go V6, sitting in a V6 and four cylinder Toyota do not even feel like they are from the same manufacturer.
I would agree but I’m sure people in the comment will say “Toyota’s aren’t reliable anymore. They are having issues w the 8 speed and the fuel pump recall”
They never mention that in these videos. RUclips car reviews are very short sighted and only talk about NEW NEW NEW sadly. Real owners that spend real money on these cars and will own them for decades should know that information too.
100% agree on the Toyota reliability and the well-earned reputation. But these days, others are pretty reliable, and H/K have moved to the top 5 in the category. But yes, Highlanders have a pretty high resale.(not all Toyota vehicles enjoy that tho like the Camry, Corolla, and others cars).
Ours did when the 1 and 2 connecting rods flew through the block randomly, . Lucky I kept a fire extinguisher on hand since I was aware of the Theta 2 engine recall. What a piss off.. could have killed my family. That was it for me. F’ Hyundai. Never again.
Carlos Lago from Edmunds, formerly from MotorTrend, bought a Kia Telluride for himself after test driving one. Everyman Driver has multiple videos where he says he wants to buy a Telluride for himself. Doug DeMuro bought a Kia Stinger for his long driving trips. If that isn't the ultimate green light to go ahead and buy a Hyundai/Kia I don't what is.
For 50 gran the center console area in the Highlander looks abit disappointing for a Platinum trim( cheap in other words) .. i remember when Toyota platinum trims use to really shine
Highlander !! , even though the palisade might have a few more features, I know the highlander will last and the Toyota’s v-6 engines are amazing and last a very long time !
One thing to note about pricing; in my area the Highlander is available with $1,750 rebates while the Pallisade has none. That would negate your price difference. Consumer Reports testing also shows the Pallisade (and Telluride for that matter) to be quieter than the Highlander.
You can’t compare two vehicles based on what you can get in your particular area unless it’s universally true, like Honda Type R that dealer jack up no matter where you go. They did a fair comparison.
Such a great way to compare! Really enjoyed the content. I keep my vehicles longer so I would opt for Hyundai with longer warranty. I have owned both brands, (Corolla, Tiburon, Tuscon) and have had good luck with reliability. Next vehicle I buy will be hybrid or EV.

Exactly! The resale value, reliability and fuel economy are what smart people go after. I've been a lifelong Toyota owner and I must say it feels great not having to spent an eternity in the dealership service dept. to get issues with a vehicle resolved.
The comparo that many have been waiting for! The Palisade is just such a tremendous value for the same money, although the Highlander's resale is incredible for such a highly-sold vehicle. Yes I gotta be that guy brothers: If this was the tippy top of the Highlander, then the Calligraphy Palisade should've been matched. Hyundai pulled a switcheroo this year and removed many of the items that were on the Limited and moved to the Calligraphy. The Alcantara headliner, exclusive leather seating, power-folding mirrors, and a few other niceties are on that trim, which is totally worth the extra $1000. Still, these two represent exactly what families are looking for in 3-row crossovers.

Even more curious is how Kia can sell both a loaded K5 GT 2.5 for the same money as a Stinger 2.5. They got some magic mojo over there.

Have always been a Toyota fan. But We bought a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe sport Lux 4 years ago.. yes it has great options, super comfortable but there is ABSOLUTELY no comparison to Toyotas build quality and reliability.. You would have to be on some serious drugs to think a Hyundai could ever compare to a Toyota in the reliability and build quality segment.. Jeezuss!!!!
LOL you can't compare something from 8 years ago to today. There is a reason why Hyundai and Kia are storming to the top for vehicle sales, globally. Toyota's build quality is actually quite average. Things are simple, but it doesn't mean it's well built or engineered. I owned a 2002 Tundra. The frame rusted in 5 years, brake lines rusted in 6, and Toyota issued a recall but never fixed the issue. 2011 I purchased another Tundra (in hopes it would be problem free). Encountered air injection pump issues, lower ball joint failure, AC pump failure. This all happened within the first 3 years. Owned a 2017 4Runner for about one year and had it at the dealership for 4 months. I'm done with Toyota. They have a huge following, and have sold more vehicles than any other brand, but, their quality isn't what you want to make it out to be. No brand is perfect, and there is a reason why Toyota is failing financially, is because they're trying to complete recalls, and fix known issues...you may want to do some research
Hard to argue with the Palisade. It comes down to your plans. Based on our shop experience with any previous hyundai models, it's going to be clapped out at the 7 year mark, but you'll have a better equipped vehicle during that time.
@@LamNguyen-sr1sy yeah same with a Prius I have I agree on that. It’s why I would get the regular one if anything more bulletproof as a full gas. The palisade is pretty amazing tho I have one just the long term makes me wonder even if it’s been basically the most reliable hyundai model.
What about the pali tho? Haven’t heard any engine failures or reliability issues and it’s been out for years now. It seems that was the theta 2 issue they did add multi port to help with the gdi. But of course hyundai is still very sketchy with the huge amount of issues they had the couple of years past
I own the Palisade. I will no longer own a Toyota after the breaks failed on my Father in law's truck. Plus I was able to extend my maintenance package to 5 years. Also having the 100k warranty will pass it to the 2nd owner if I decide to sell.
Are you comparing the fully loaded versions of both cars here? I think the Palisade has more high end features starting the lower versions. Toyota I believe is a more reliable vehicle overall.
I totally disagree in your rating system. You are forgetting a huge difference. The highlander hybrid gets Up to 36 city / 35 highway compared to the 19 city / 26 highway of the Huyndai Palisade. Gas cost in the San Francisco bay area is a crazy $4.75 per gallon and getting worst every year. That is a HUGH difference in fuel savings over a 7 year span if you drive a lot like me. All the other differences is not as important.
Good review. I test drove both extensively. However, for my money and long term goals I went with the Highlander hybrid platinum trim. I'm an audiophile too and surprisingly the Palisade's sound system was not very clear and lack the of speakers didn't help the range for that size of vehicle. That is one area the Hyundai should address in the next gen. Aesthetics is a personal choice as well, I just couldn't get comfortable with the Palisade's divorced head lights, but no one can argue its value proposition and the strides Hyundai has made in this segment with it's first 7-8 passenger SUV. They have set the bar high with Kia Telluride as well.
@@Ken-vl4wk Hybrids tend to have a long life based on the research out there and Toyota is one of the pioneers of that technology. Hats of to them.
hope they didn't get the German mechanics, or the Palisade won't leave the shop hahaha
i love the 2021 Toyota Highlander Limited Hybrid it has lots of features and i look at it in person very nice space inside and a luxury caramel color for the seats.
There’s a reason why Hyundai and Toyota dealers are doing that. Because everyone wants the palisade over the highlander. 😁
Before yes I agree, but now Hyundai is catching up in the reliability.
I would take the Palisade.
You couldn’t be more correct V6 all day
I wouldn't describe any of Toyota's powertrains as "refined"
@@kristians2704 their 3.5L v6 is very refined imo. The v6 in my 2020 Camry is so quiet
How about long term reliability and resale value? I would think the Toyota would have the edge in those categories. Nice video.
I would agree but I’m sure people in the comment will say “Toyota’s aren’t reliable anymore. They are having issues w the 8 speed and the fuel pump recall”
Every brand could have problems, but even with that no brand can beat Toyota. Resale value always is high in Toyota. 🙄
When I think about resale value I always think about Honda being #1 even though Toyota are great with their pickups, still cant compare to Honda.
I love how Hyundai and Kia cars spontaneously catch on fire!

I really expected that to be closer. Pleasantly surprised.
Highlander !! , even though the palisade might have a few more features, I know the highlander will last and the Toyota’s v-6 engines are amazing and last a very long time !

i like the pali cause of the looks from the outside and the interior is just a whole diff level its also very smooth to drive.
One thing to note about pricing; in my area the Highlander is available with $1,750 rebates while the Pallisade has none. That would negate your price difference.
Consumer Reports testing also shows the Pallisade (and Telluride for that matter) to be quieter than the Highlander.
I've looked at both these vehicles and the Highlander seems inferior in my opinion. Amazes me how good the Palisade is
You can’t compare two vehicles based on what you can get in your particular area unless it’s universally true, like Honda Type R that dealer jack up no matter where you go. They did a fair comparison.
Great review guys! Keep it up 👍
Such a great way to compare! Really enjoyed the content. I keep my vehicles longer so I would opt for Hyundai with longer warranty. I have owned both brands, (Corolla, Tiburon, Tuscon) and have had good luck with reliability. Next vehicle I buy will be hybrid or EV.
Toyota has to step it up next gen
no it does not. has a nicer interior in my opinion
Toyota is still resting on the "It's a Toyota, why would you want to look at anything else?" 🙄 Meanwhile competition is heating up an consumers are flocking to other vehicles including Hyundai.
@@smartkid1201 yeah. tech wise, i choose palisade. but toyota will be WAY more reliable and will never break down on me. either way, toyota is the dumbest brand on the market. hyundai is a little bit smarter.

Exactly. But they would never as that would invalidate Lexus. Hyundai moved Genesis wayyy up market to avoid such problems.

I’d pick the highlander all day long over a palisade

Palisade all day.
I already have my 2021 palisade SEL convenience package for 7 months now,and im already can't wait for 2026 palisade to trade-in my 2021.lol
Palisade just has too many interior features that the Highlander doesn't have - second row ventilated seats, third-row heated seats (for 2023), USD ports for third row, ambient lights, power reclining/declining for third row, etc. I'm buying a family vehicle and it's hard not to choose Palisade over Highlander. People would say the Highlander would last 15 - 20 years but I want to enjoy the car with all possible now and the few years.. Who knows what would happen in 10 years, honestly.
The palisade will last just as long if not longer. Toyota reliability isn’t the same as it used to be. Look at consumer reviews on the highlander vs palisades. You will see there are far less issues/ complaints

Exactly! The resale value, reliability and fuel economy are what smart people go after. I've been a lifelong Toyota owner and I must say it feels great not having to spent an eternity in the dealership service dept. to get issues with a vehicle resolved.
Love palasade I bought today
I own a 2021 calligraphy. It does not have power folding mirrors. That is only available on the telluride, sadly.

Jeezuss!!!!
That was Hyundai 8 years ago. The gap in quality and reliability is a whole closer and almost minimal.
Highlander has been proven reliability, I will go with the Highlander.
Awesome video!😸
Hard to argue with the Palisade.
It comes down to your plans. Based on our shop experience with any previous hyundai models, it's going to be clapped out at the 7 year mark, but you'll have a better equipped vehicle during that time.
If you're going with Highlander Hybrid, you would likely have to replace the battery after 7 years (if not sooner), just keep that in mind.
@@LamNguyen-sr1sy Toyota warranties the battery for a minimum of 10 years, so I assume that means they expect it to go longer than that usually. 🤷
@@LamNguyen-sr1sy yeah same with a Prius I have I agree on that. The issue is there’s no fall back I heard at least Honda hybrids at least old ones can go gas fully when the battery dies Toyota doesn’t do that even tho I can’t stand Honda much I’ll give them that’s a smarter design.
Opinions are funny things, aren't they....like yours. :)
At the end of the day, Toyota maybe a bit less flashy but I’ll take the reliability any day over the gimmicks.
The Toyota obviously. Is there really a comparison? I would rather have anything than another Hyundai.

KIA and Hyundai sure are coming with great vehicles therefore trading the car in 2025 will be exciting.

Palisade looks much tougher.
Palisade any day out of the telluride and the highlander
