Great review, pretty much how I felt too with Arcade at the time. I miss these vehicular combat games being prominent, particularly these arcade-like ones with weapons like Twisted Metal and Vigilante 8. Vigilante 8 in particular is one of my all time favorites alongside Interstate '76 thanks to its 70s style and music mixed with sci-fi and post-apoc elements.
:3 im shocked that you went through the trouble to review this one, thats dedication :3 All thats left is its spiritual successor Starwars Demolition, and you'll have completed the Luxoflux car combat games.....and probably get an achievement for it XD
Playing it on my Steam Deck. I like it. The next best thing is V8 2nd Offense on Dreamcast. Have it on the Deck too, but oddly I find myself playing the 360 version. I actually enjoy it a lot.
I love this game! It took me awhile to get used to the physics and redesigned combo moves (some of them suck now), but for me the main problem with V8: Arcade was how slow-paced it is. I had the same problem with V8: Second Offense, too. Nothing's better than the original V8. The PlayStation version of V8 is the 91 octane, V8:2nd is the 88 octane, and this game is the 85 octane. If they did a V8 remake, keep it 100% true to the original and add online multiplayer. That would be jet fuel octane! Speaking of remakes, I never understood why some people think this game is a remake. The levels are obviously quite different from V8, the cars are different and some of the combos V8:2nd are in the game. AND, the biggest mistake of them all is the lack of a rear view button. Instead of the original rear view button, you need to use the analog stick and instead of instantly showing what's behind you and instantly going back, it makes the camera rotate around the car. WHY?!!? This is very disorienting and it screws up my gameplay because it's too slow. I guess they were trying to copy other modern car games which have been using this annoying approach for rear view. But the again, V8: Arcade is such a slow paced game compared to the original that you don't need to keep checking your 6 for any mortars or cannon shells to dodge out of the way from.
I'll always prefer 2nd Offense for the levels like Meteor Crater and Winter Games, and I loved Y the Alien's garbage truck! Plus, if you used a cheat code (or the V8 disc) you could play all of the original V8 levels! I wish we had gotten a third game...
Even then, if you want a Vehicle Combat game for the 360, you can play Blood drive, Roadkill, Full Auto, or most on the OG Xbox, but none of them have that 1970s aesthetic
Despite being a PS1 game V8-2 featured terrain deformation with things like special button combination attacks. This one does not as far as I can tell. Even that just goes to show you how little care and love was put into it. This game is the Back 4 Blood of Vigilante series.
Someone make a spiritual successor to V8 with Wreckfest physics and damage model. Literally just take Wreckfest and add weapons and retro-futuristic flair. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD
I loved this game. Thing you have to realize is that this is a scaled down modern iteration paying homage to the series for $20 and not a full-fledged installment at $60. This was an Xbox Live Arcade title and is meant to be a smaller game; sadly as such it's old now and with that XBLA games will not retain players online to have an online game with especially when they're nearing or past being a decade old. I for one played the online around the time this game was released as well as the time after when it was really only the good players that played religiously played. It certainly surprisingly very stable and is a lot of fun until you play against those better, religious players that actually learned how to master/ exploit the game then you have to learn by example how to beat them. I learned quickly that Piranha and Jefferson were basically godlike since their specials stun their opponent and rockets and cannon can be spammed to just decimate your health because of how quick they were. Those games were sometimes good 50/50s you just had to outplay the other player. The physics were always the thing that off put me about the Vigilante 8 series and Arcade didn't have too different of physics but if anything made them a lot quicker to work with and responsive. Everything else mentioned again is just missing the point that this was a mini, arcade title and not a full installment. Soundtrack just ripped the tracks that fit the theme of the series better from the first 2 games. The lack of ending cinematics again was just the simple fact this wasn't meant to be some major story game just a game to pop in and out with. That's really about all I'd have to correct with this review.
I actually just bought and completely finished this game last week, it's definitely the worst one in the series. Interesting to play through just to see how it is, the 5 repeating tracks do get quite annoying though pretty quick as well as the low map count.
You know, I remember seeing trailers for this game back then and saw very little gameplay footage of it. I nearly forgot this game even existed 'til this review.
By the way, if you like car combat games and play on 360, why not check out Full Auto? It was a launch title Xbox-exclusive and it was THE reason I bought a 360. I even bought a Full Auto faceplate for my 360, remember when that was a thing? Whatever happened to consoles having replaceable faceplates, I really enjoyed that feature. Anyways Full Auto is kind of like burnout meets Twisted Metal with some time control mechanics. There's so much destruction and detail that it still impresses me to this day. Definitely my favorite 360 game. Interestingly, Full Auto 2 was only released on PS3 and PSP.
@@ColdHardTruthNews which one do you enjoy more? The first V8 or do you prefer V8 2nd offense? I can only get one and I like classic stuff so I'm thinking original. What do you think?
@@shaun8062 TBH, I like both games, but if you want the original, the PS1 and N64 versions are the ones to get. The N64 version has an exclusive Super Dreamland 64 level and allows you to play in High Resolution with the Expansion Pack. The PS1 version is also good; you can swap out the disk and play your own music during the game!!
If you are a V8 fan the this xbox version emulated on xenia canary is very fun. Quick battle on hard difficulty is a good challenge :) And the DLC works.
Back to the days this "remake" made me rethink my criticism about original V8 and 2nd. Excitement was ruined so hard after all those expectations, so after Arcade remake release I remember and love original games even more despite their flaws.
This is certainly the weakest game in the series, the physics feel like they're trying to recreate the odd but fun bounciness of the originals but didn't translate well at all in gameplay. The original games made it work and was very satisfying to drive around at times. This however just feels unfinished and the lack of damage to the car models is disappointing. In the originals the car would warp when damaged, windows would shatter and show cracks where the glass shattered and the lights would get smashed immediately when shot out. Sadly I never got to beat the originals as I no longer have my PS1 copies and because I grew up on Xbox during PS2 era learning a different controller was not easy for me as a kid wanting to get into retro gaming.
This was my first digitally downloaded Xbox game, I was so hyped remembering what V8 was on PSX, and I was so disappointed! This game is barren, sluggish, strangely silent, it looks empty yet the frame rate is all over the place. I wanted to enjoy it so much, but I felt scammed.
have you talked twisted metal?? if not... please do.. twisted metal 2 is one of the best ps1 games for sooo many reasons and people do praise it but its far more brilliant than they have noticed balance wise.. its sooo well done. does have issues as any game but it is prime gaming fun
I LOVED Vigilante 8 when I was a kid, but going back and playing it now the graphics make my eyes hurt lmao. I wish this game had more content like levels and destruction missions but I'm still gonna play it :) I mean it looks FANTASTIC
I was gonna pick this up, however it's not available on the backwards compatibility list and I'm definitely not digging my 360 out for this! lol great review though!
they improved on looks, kind of, because it looks too "cartoonized" but butchered just about everything else. the textures are obviously nicer, the shaders, etc and not having ps1 prone issues such as the vehicle moving across the terrain even when not putting any input in and such.
It’s pretty pathetic, all this new tech and they still have far less cars than 2nd offense. This game seemed super lazy and doesn’t really hold up to today game standards at all.

Star Wars Demolition doesn't count as a spirital sucessor to Vigilanti 8 games, rather it's a clone of Twisted Metal
Vigilante 8 and Second Offense deserve a remake just as Tony Hawks 1 + 2.
Oh man
One could only dream...
It's like a demo of what could've been. Disappointing, but i still fire it up every once in a while.
I’ve been trying to play this game for the longest but can’t seem to find it!

Just play the originals via emulators on your XBone (unless those only run properly on the new Xbox)
