I have a theory on this one: I think you're "wrong" and I mean that somewhat figuratively but that's not because Aizen isn't strong or something. It's mostly because of the nature of Aizens Bankai. I like to imagine that BEFORE the events of Bleach Aizen already had achieved Bankai - of course - and he used it. Let me explain: It's not unlikely that Shikai and Bankai sometimes represent an opposition or duality in a way. Just like Minazuki from Unohana. Sometimes Shikai and Bankai represent different levels of emotional integrity or express specific behavior or manerisms of it's wielder like Kyorakus Zanpakuto. In Shikai it's more like children games with some goofyness to it, emphasizing Shunsuis childish and unconcerned character that make him seem like he doesn't feels any necessity to think too much about the gravity of a situation yet his Bankai delves in his most serious and profound characteristics, that totally eliminates anything that is represented by his Shikai and tells a momentous tragedy resulting in at least one death with no room for fun and games. With this in mind I think Kyoka Suigetsu's Bankai does the exact opposite of what the Shikai is capable of: When the Shikai is perfect illusion, what if Bankai shows him the most sincere truth. It shows him everything how it REALLY is. To it's core. BUT only to the extent of his understanding. So the only limitation is his cognitive capability (which is exceptional but would explain why he ended up "losing" in the end)? It's not that powerful of a Bankai when thinking about its direct impact in combat but it totally makes sense. If his Bankai showed him how the things really are, his Shikai is more than just extraordinarily potent to honor the "perfect illusion"-aspect since I think it's likely the same as with it's Bankai: The better the wielder knows the truth the stronger he is able to manipulate the perception of truth for others. But that's just my theory.
