Brexit has very little to do with the driver shortage. Long arduous hours, low pay, little to no work life balance and haulage firms that max out drivers hours consistently which means most drivers are doing 60/70 hour weeks is the real issue. Haulage firms have been exploiting Eastern European drivers for cheap labour which has driven down the wages while cost of living continues to rise, when you tell people if your not happy with the money find a better paying job they will eventually do it, don’t piss and moan when they do. Last but not least is the insane regulations and red tape that the drivers have to deal with and god help you if you miss step even slightly as the police, vosa and the Dvla will all jump over you and bury you in fines and points on your license, the industry is reaping what it has sown. There are 80,000 drivers in the UK who do not use their hgv licences. Is this a " shortage ?" ....the trouble with new drivers is this.....no experience = no job........no job = no experience ! Trucking liability insurance requires all drivers to have at least 6-12 months driving experience ! I recently spoke to a Firm that was seeking Class 1 drivers and i asked if they could take on a newly passed hgv Driver .......they said they would like to however, their Insurance requires at least 12 months demonstrable experience ! .......ne driver shortage , just a shortage of " experienced drivers" who do not mind working for £12 per hour, pissing on the tyres, crapping on newspaper and washing their ass with a water bottle, cheeky rude warehouse staff , office staff who wonder why you are late as they are clueless about the roads . This is what will be used to pull the UK back into the control of Brussels. UK Firms just cannot train their employees to a professional standard . Regards......Abe, class 2 driver for 20 years , have class 1 but never able to use it due to " lack of experience!"

The hourly rate for drivers is the same it was 20 years ago. No substantial pay rises in 20 years because there was an inexhaustible supply of foreign drivers prepared to work for peanuts and in appalling conditions.....who sent all their monies home and paid as little tax as possible.
A UK driver was simply told " if you don't like it, you can f**k off, as you can be easily replaced " if they complained about the lack of pay rises.
The logistics companies that have treated their drivers well and have a good reputation do not have a single problem with getting drivers or retaining those they have.

This is Tony Blair fault. The way he skewered the Working Time Directive is closely linked to this. The directive was supposed to result in shorter hours and better pay - The way he implemented it resulted in longer hours a lower hourly rates. He implemented something called POA, which allows bosses to keep drivers at work for 15 hours a day, excused by not counting waiting time (such as waiting for for Lorry to loaded) as working hours. Meanwhile while the WTD set rules on working time limits across a week, Blair set it across 26 weeks. So in other words you can be pushed to work insane hours for 26 weeks before you get any time off in lieu. It made a bad job far worse, the implementation of directive correlates to the decline of people working in this sector.

The UK government didn’t look after their HGV drivers and when the EU workers who were filling the gap (that got larger and larger each year) left then the inevitable happened. It’s quite simple, since they went back there country of origin, Poland for example, during the pandemic to be with family rather than being locked out for the year or without the burdensome travel arrangements. Once they were there they realised oh, since the EU has been playing Robin Hood for so long Poland etc is pretty much on par with the uk on wages! This as a result of them forcing uk wages down and polish wages increasing! There is no benefit in them coming to the uk anymore as economic migrants! On top of that there has been a major lack of investment in uk drivers over the last 20 years meaning the average age of a truck driver is 50 odd, they just so happen to be a group that also may have medical issues..... many of which have decided to sack it off when they were shielding. After spending 70+ hours away from their families for there whole career many have chosen to stay with there wife and kids! Oh and IR35 now means they are gonna get taxed a hell of a lot more which makes the job even less attractive! Oh and they have virtually no washing facilities in the uk! Basically have to live in squalor! There are many reasons for this but in all honesty Brexit is a very small part of the story! In fact, it has worked in discouraging economic migrants!
