I haven't played Scythe in a long time, althought it's one of my top three games still (other two being Terraforming Mars and Root), so yesterday I played against the Automa and lost, as is tradition. That just reminded me how much I miss playing Scythe (our gaming group sort of fell apart) so I came back here to rewatch this match. I'd like to see GameNight revisit some of the games already played out, but this time with all the expansions included etc. etc. It might be fun (I know it would be fun!)
One of the best things about this game is how quick the turns are. There's little downtime, so you don't have to wait long until it's your turn again. And even the downtime is interesting for bystanders.
Nikki kept misreading the encounter cards, to her own detriment. The first option never forces you to pay anything. So, instead of paying 2 money for 1 popularity (as she did at 1:47:45 ) she should have GAINED 2 money and 1 popularity. A swing of 4 money in this case.
You joke about Poland arming bears, but... Wojtek's named after the WWII bear that Poland drafted into their army so that they could transport him on a British military vehicle (he went on to be a valued member of his troop, specifically for carrying ammo, depicted on the emblem of his troop, and became a minor celebrity following the war in both Poland and the UK), so... Poland did, essentially, arm a bear once.
played it twice now and i can't wait for the next game. In our last game 3 of the 4 ppl had 3+ stars on the board. Stars and popularity are a huge deal in this game. Nicky should have protected her in combat by moving workers to hr mechs. So your basicly taking away points from opponents.
There's so many ways to play this game. I played one game where there was only 2 combats between players the whole game, and I got stars for both max power and max popularity. I didn't end the game (only 5 stars) but I did win it. Fascinating game.
I can't wait to play this game! My wife and I are new to the hobby, I want to eventually get us up to Gloomhaven and so far we've played Horrified, Everdell and Clank! This looks like a significant but easy step up in complexity and depth, and I really really love the board, cards, components, theme, etc. Once we get a few more playthroughs of Everdell and Clank!, this is first on the list!
Did you get Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion? I have that one, and it’s great at teaching how to play Gloomhaven. It’s also challenging enough that it doesn’t feel like “Baby’s First Gloomhaven.” I have really enjoyed it, enough that I will buy Frosthaven once it’s available, but probably won’t buy Gloomhaven. (The team seems to have learned a lot from Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion, and it sounds like Frosthaven will maintain some of the smoother gameplay elements from Jaws of the Lion, but then be a HUGE EPIC game like the original Gloomhaven).
I think a few of them made a common first play error: prioritizing difficult objectives because they're called "objectives" instead of making more efficient moves. There are 10 ways to get stars but you can never have more than 6 and they're all of equal value, an objective is just one and never has to be done. If your objectives are terrible for your position you should ignore them. Lincoln at one point says he was doing his complicated objective and that's why he didn't attack Dave to spend his stuff and get a star. Why? You take one move action to make that attack and immediately gain a star. Jumping through multiple hoops for a weird objective also just gets you 1 star of equal value but takes longer.
@@atomiccritter6492 Sure, and to be clear the reason I know its a common mistake is because I made it on my first play. I spent a huge chunk of the game trying to do an objective to build buildings in a starting area with no wood. Only after did I realize I could have simply ignored both my "objectives" and it would have been better. It's something I always try to make a point to tell new players now.
This is a really good comment and definitely worth highlighting to new players you introduce to Scythe! They are just some of many OPTIONS and don't feel obligated. I'm a new player myself.
@@murvo the objective tip is something I always try to mention teaching the game. People will often think that because they're called objectives that they NEED to do them, but that's not the case. That's why I mention it here.
Yeah, during the game I thought exactly the same: attacking the weakest player over and over again is mechanically good because he can't fight back, meaning that it's easy stars/victory points. Kinda bad game design, IMO.
I think she also made this mistake on the one before this where she spent 3 popularity to get a mech rather than just taking the coins since she had the card that lets her get a mech and more for 2 coins.
Yep, was nearly yelling at my screen. She even read the card correctly the first time. I've found a good rule of thumb is to remember that: Option 1 ALWAYS gives you one or two small benefits for free. Option 2 ALWAYS gives you a larger benefit in exchange for cash. Option 3 ALWAYS gives you a generally even larger benefit in exchange for popularity. In other words, there is always an option with zero downside (aside from the possibility of passing on a strategically better option)
Event cards seemes the most regular thing in the game, same estructure in every card. I think Nicky seemed a little tired towards the end of the game so her attention diminished a bit. Maybe just a bad day.
I actually spent several minutes trying to figure out why everyone thought metal in any way resembled a canoe paddle. Only to finally realize everyone was saying "ore," not "oar." Got it.
Thanks guys. Great vid. I have been itching to play with for a while and playing vicariously through you guys has made me put this game higher on my want list.
Great video guys. Really enjoyed it! And congratulations to Aaron for winning! I thought there should have been a little bit longer to acknowledge his victory. Love your videos, especially the deeper games like Scythe.
Such an amazing game. Lincoln I used to feel like you on combat until I started getting combat cars and making sure I had power to defend myself - otherwise yes you are an easy target and you are giving other people stars.
I love your videos! They are so informative and I hope the game makers thank you for advertising g your games! You guys have great chemistry. You 4 were great playing X Com too
I believe the explanation at 55:10 regarding the Rusviet movement ability is incorrect. Moment between villages has to be between villages you control, not just any villages.
I believe that was understood, as it started out with mentioning "villages you control", still worth pointing out. This is also why you should read the rules yourself when learning a game (or at least one of your group should have read the rules).
Love the sound of the coins, and I know for sure when my group of friends starts playing this there will be alliances and backstabbing happening all over the map :D
A little bit too late but: In the final turn, the guy who triggers the end of the game with Entlistment, says that the other two players should take their "Bonus for Entlistment", but they actually shouldn't have taken them, because that happens direct after the active player finishes his action, but his action actually finishes when he puts the sixth Star and the End Game is executed just before the other players could take their bonuses
Hi guys. Great video. Just found this channel and your website. I'm a huge board game nerd and I'm so far a big fan of these videos. It helps me put games I've never heard of onto my wishlist of games to buy in the future. I really like how you guys explain the rules of the game then show off how its played. Good stuff
Malcolm Campbell Me too. Tabletop used to be the go-to for me when I was first getting into the hobby. You can't deny the production value and it's cool to see the occasional celebrity, but any more, I enjoy the unedited full play-throughs and everyday-Joe vibe of the Game Night cast much more. Plus, this season, it feels like Wil is overdoing the story-telling in the reality-show-style interview segments.
Tabletop excelled with close up shots, which this particular video could benefit greatly from and pop ups with rules reminders and general status of the game as its played.
great video, Ive being wondering if I should buy this game, because normally I can only play two player games.... and also the complexity scared me but not any more after this video
Still one of my favourite games to play, along with camel up. Nothing beats swearing and laughing at each other over diplomacy, only to screw each other over the very next turns :D
There is a game (realeased in 2018 and in pre-Alpha) on pc , PS4 and Xbox one called iron Harvest which is like company of heroes 1 and 2 and is like this board game (but not a board game)
Encounter cards don't have any titles or flavor text on them on purpose. As explained in the rulebook the idea is for you to look at the art on the card and use your imagination to create what's happening. Way more exciting and cool than just some text.
Sorry for Nerco-ing the comments. Dave said a worker enters into a hex and the other lone worker has to retreat. That situation can never happen because a lone worker can never enter an occupied hex pg 11 of rules.
Point of order for RUclips...This isn't a forum, there's no such thing as 'necroing' the comments here when new people are watching this forever. Hence this reply to you 2 years later :)
that discussion at the end... it's war game, you win, you loose that's the game. you attack, then you expose yourself. had she not attack, he might not have attack her
Agree 100% with you here. She made a horrible decision and she opened herself to a huge blowout. On top of that, the next turn I believe she does something useless instead of trying to get her power up, and defend against an easy attack. At that point, it's not that the game rewards attacking the weakest player, it's more the player who messed up multiple times....
I like everything about this game except the encounters. It's the one part of the game that makes it very clear that this was a kickstarter. It feels tacked on after the fact. they are all basically the exact same three choices over and over. It's also the only part of the game where they name the currency and decided to call them dollars... which seems stupid, considering the genre, the location and the effort they made to design the coins.
Dollars are a pretty common term for currency around the world, more than 20 currencies in the world use the "dollar" as their money so it's probably more appropriate than you think. It's seems fine and simple.
A clarification for overpowered red faction. The mech ability to move from the factory to a village. You can only move to a village that YOU ALREADY CONTROL. Not to ANY village on the map.
At 1:21:00 - is Lincoln allowed to spend resources on a hex that he doesn't control any more (moved his workers off the space and left his goods behind)?hard to see but Dave says "I was gonna take em if you left em", insinuating they'd been left unattended
very nice game, I have 2 questions. if you are in combat, and you only use combatcards and zero on the dial,do you lose power on the powertrack? If your workers must retreat to homebase, Can you use them again,or are they out of the game? thank you.
The Combat Cards take the place of points on the Power track. Workers that retreat are not out of the game, they just need to move to a productive hex to benefit you. Thanks for the note and for watching.
Kristo Vaher yellow had the highest win percentage during playtesting. with newbies they don't know how to maximize the extreme power of red so it's not overbearing. black and blue are very newb unfriendly. black has to aggro really hard and try to end the game asap while camping the tunnels waiting for someone to send just one mech or character to one to snipe it.
We generally don’t let Red play anymore in our groups. Myself I play a lot with black, and it seems to win quite a bit with 2 or 5 players, but struggles with 3 player. With 2 you just wreck your opponent’s face, with five you have endless options for picking off weak points/exposed areas, steal resources and blitzkrieg for early win (forget about popularity, just rush and you will have six stars before any of your opponents have two). I think with more meta though this can easily be countered. White we also find hard to beat, certainly doable but does well with low player counts, ideally three. Just run around the map freely grabbing encounters (though while being careful of attack especially from black). I’ve had limited play with purple and also found it quite strong, but as long as you know what you are doing and do early factory rush. For the most balanced two player game, I recommend yellow vs blue, they seem to be the weaker races. Yellow is a good counter to black and also makes for interesting play.
@Jordan Lol. Togawa needs the most turns out of all factions to rush the factory and the only faction that needs its riverwalk mech to get there is Crimea. Everyone else has a shortcut
You need six stars. You gain stars by maxing out your board and winning up to two fights. So gain resources, control territory and min/max board position. Lots of little things can be done like putting workers where they can be attacked or chasing down encounter cards really makes this game interesting to play but difficult to watch. I.e. The players are playing across six or seven fronts at the same time from "can't play the same action twice" or "can only move here to there" or "do this to the detriment of that".
I've only played this once and watched a few walk through vids, but it looks like red are over powered. is this right? I'm thinking of taking out the red team for my next game.
Yes it is. In fact it comes with an automa to replicate a second player for us solitaire players. There I a deceptively low level of interaction, mostly just battle stars.
Eric Viola what do you mean? You need a mech with Riverwalk to carry yourself in and out or a mine. Unless you have the blue faction that workers can walk through rivers
I didn't say move them across rivers, through mines. I said from your home base. Dave said at the end he was killed because he couldn't move his workers out of his home base. You are allowed to move them out of your home base on their own, without a mech.
Dave wasn't saying that workers can't leave the home base on their own. He was saying that because the workers can only move one space, you use up their movement just getting them out of the home base (unless a mech landed there with them). Basically, it can be painfully slow to get those retreating workers back where you need them if a mech isn't there to help carry them.
I wonder if the game would have played differently if Dave had remembered to mention that the factory counts as three hexes for end-game control... :) When I play Polonia I tend to do as Lincoln: Build a tunnel, but also the speed mech so that the character can zoom around to take encounters for the double choice.
Dude knows the rules like the back of his hand. Also admits to sucking at the game lol. From what I found, try to get as high popularity as you can, while rushing stars. Only attack on opportunities that can grant you a star without hurting reputation.
What prevents you from playing the same way every game(not the whole game but like your first 5-10 turns)...so long as you are the same faction? Like every game you already know you will produce, then move to certain spots, then produce, then x, then y, then z..... Setup doesn't change, right?
PreppinShootinLivin You may have the same faction the next time, but end up with a different player mat. Each player mat has the bottom row actions in different spots, with variable cost/benefits, so one game it may be easier to deploy mechs but then the next game it might cost you much less to build structures. So even these small changes can affect the first couple of turns you take.
ahh ok, I didn't catch that...seems like it may be enough. And of course as they mentioned..once the game gets going then things really start to change in how you play and you have to be flexible. Thanks.
PreppinShootinLivin yeah good players know when to disrupt other people's carefully constructed build orders to deny them certain resources depending on what player mat they have.
You don't need to get to the factory & I don't agree it favours targeting the weakest. The whole game isn't combat heavy as attacking opens you up to attacks yourself.
Combats are really powerful in scythe. They give you the possibility of getting 2 stars in a single action and potentially 3-4 stars in that turn if you can get a bottom row star and/or objective star.
I *think* an expansion fixed it (?), but my BIG problem with Scythe is the "I can cause the game to finish now, but am I winning" thing. Without a VP track, the only way to know is to calculate everyone's scores, and the rules have a daft "other players can time you out" fix for that. Really bad flaw, IMHO. JS publishes some gorgeous games, but I prefer it when he gets other designers in... X
It's fixed in digital edition. For the table top edition you can make an agreement together before you start that everyone has to disclose the amount of coins they have when asked.
35 mins on the rules explanation (which as always, is a very good) and that just puts me off wanting to play this and a good few other games. because I know the stuff I learnt in the first 25 mins has already left the building! ;-) Nice artwork though :-)
Why? Dollars are a pretty common term for currency around the world, more than 20 currencies in the world use the "dollar" as their money so it's probably more appropriate than you think. It's seems fine and simple for a game set in an alternative 1920's.
Lincoln did not produce correctly. More than one time. For example: 1:42:20, You can see, that he can produce on two hexes, but he always does that on three. :) Next turn after Lincoln for Aron, he moved 3 times with his character, he could only go two with basic movement. He could go three times, if he chose Factory card! :) Lot of mistakes, but thank Your for this playtrough, it was entertaining. :)
He can pick three because he's built the Mill, which according to the FAQ allows a choice of an extra production space, just like the upgrade does. The mill only produces if the territory it occupies is selected. With the mill and the upgrade you can produce on 4 territories!
1:30 - Player Boards
3:40 - What is a Turn

I think Tabletop has the edge in explaining rules of games but I prefer the "common man" unscripted appeal of Gamenight
Unless you count the near constant screwing up of the rules Tabletop commits.
Gamenight is hit and miss too

Now you have to play with invaders from afar, the wind gambit and the rise of Fenris!!!!!
Also Nikki played as what imho is the toughest faction to play as. Saxony has a ton of power but is lousy at almost everything else from the get go
There is a game (realeased in 2018 and in pre-Alpha) on pc , PS4 and Xbox one called iron Harvest which is like company of heroes 1 and 2 and is like this board game (but not a board game)
It isn't a war game.
@@iknowbetter For sure but this is beginners with learning curves, it happens in heavier games and takes a few games to really get into it :)
Aaron is alive :-)))
A clarification for overpowered red faction. The mech ability to move from the factory to a village. You can only move to a village that YOU ALREADY CONTROL. Not to ANY village on the map.
At 1:21:00 - is Lincoln allowed to spend resources on a hex that he doesn't control any more (moved his workers off the space and left his goods behind)?hard to see but Dave says "I was gonna take em if you left em", insinuating they'd been left unattended
Nice! I have just bought one
Interesting how Aaron is more interested in games with a story, whereas Dave is more interested in games with mechanics.
This Is Quality.
I'd love to see you guys do a heavy conflict game like blood rage or kemet
Also you can't take workers into battle so the People's Army only gets used on defense.
You can just load them into your mech, ship 'em over, and play the extra card
Thanks for the playthrough guys. I've been on the fence with this one. Love Viticulture but so unsure about Scythe!
Board Game Sanctuary I played once and bought it immediately :)
It’s an amazing game. I love it
very nice game,
I have 2 questions.
if you are in combat, and you only use combatcards and zero on the dial,do you lose power on the powertrack?
If your workers must retreat to homebase, Can you use them again,or are they out of the game?
thank you.
The Combat Cards take the place of points on the Power track.
Workers that retreat are not out of the game, they just need to move to a productive hex to benefit you.
Thanks for the note and for watching.
I guess Red IS unbalanced, at least with less experienced players? I keep seeing Red win in most play groups.
I usually see the black faction win, other see yellow.
I clean up as the Togawa Faction. It help immensely not having to wait for the river walk perk. You book it to the factory
@Jordan Lol. Togawa needs the most turns out of all factions to rush the factory and the only faction that needs its riverwalk mech to get there is Crimea. Everyone else has a shortcut
1:50:29. Love the suttle TNG reference
1:17:50 as well.
Should start the description with what the actual objective is 😕 I was confused by 30seconds in
You need six stars.
It is.
Red is strong when everyone doesnt know how to play since it is the easiest faction, they're not great when other players know what theyre doing.
Is Scythe worth it as a two player game?
Yes it is. In fact it comes with an automa to replicate a second player for us solitaire players. There I a deceptively low level of interaction, mostly just battle stars.
At 1:47:xx nikki should have gained 2 coins and a popu. Not pay 2 coins 😱
32:25 From the rules: The loser must retreat all of their units from the combat territory to their HOME BASES.
Thanks for the clarification and for watching.-Lincoln
The workers can move out of the home base on their own. Never in.
Ah. Ok
:) When I play Polonia I tend to do as Lincoln: Build a tunnel, but also the speed mech so that the character can zoom around to take encounters for the double choice.
he did mention it at 27:31
Ah, I must have missed it. But someone would probably have asked what the strange icon meant if he hadn't though.
Any chance of another play with expansions?
Loved every single minute of it :) :)
ps. just one doubt still lingers on... ore, metal or steel ;) ?
In the prevalent theme of making pointless puns -
How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck would chuck wood?
I got it! He'd, chuck as much wood as a woodchuck could,if a woodchuck could chuck wood! How'd i do? Den
1:21:00 it's what it was Dave, lol
Nice video, and fun to see Aaron and Dave back, but holy cow I am too dumb to play this game.
Kevin, it may seem complicated, but really isn't too bad. You should give it a try if you have an opportunity.
Thanks for the note and for watching.
Nice to see J.Mascis is into board games as well...
Is this game any good for solo only?
You don't need to get to the factory & I don't agree it favours targeting the weakest. The whole game isn't combat heavy as attacking opens you up to attacks yourself.
Combats are really powerful in scythe. They give you the possibility of getting 2 stars in a single action and potentially 3-4 stars in that turn if you can get a bottom row star and/or objective star.
Lol awesome
I *think* an expansion fixed it (?), but my BIG problem with Scythe is the "I can cause the game to finish now, but am I winning" thing. Without a VP track, the only way to know is to calculate everyone's scores, and the rules have a daft "other players can time you out" fix for that. Really bad flaw, IMHO.
JS publishes some gorgeous games, but I prefer it when he gets other designers in... X
It's fixed in digital edition. For the table top edition you can make an agreement together before you start that everyone has to disclose the amount of coins they have when asked.
@@sietsejohannes Thanks yes - I just bought it on the Steam Summer Sale, and noted the "cheat to see if you're winning" button! Much needed... X
35 mins on the rules explanation (which as always, is a very good) and that just puts me off wanting to play this and a good few other games. because I know the stuff I learnt in the first 25 mins has already left the building! ;-)
Nice artwork though :-)
Great watch. I got it for CHRISTMAS. I Think I am ready to go?
44:20 I highly doubt the currency in such a setting would be dollars. ;-)
Why? Dollars are a pretty common term for currency around the world, more than 20 currencies in the world use the "dollar" as their money so it's probably more appropriate than you think. It's seems fine and simple for a game set in an alternative 1920's.
@@murvo nope, not in Europe.
Lincoln did not produce correctly. More than one time.
For example: 1:42:20, You can see, that he can produce on two hexes, but he always does that on three. :)
Next turn after Lincoln for Aron, he moved 3 times with his character, he could only go two with basic movement. He could go three times, if he chose Factory card! :)
Lot of mistakes, but thank Your for this playtrough, it was entertaining. :)
He can pick three because he's built the Mill, which according to the FAQ allows a choice of an extra production space, just like the upgrade does. The mill only produces if the territory it occupies is selected.
With the mill and the upgrade you can produce on 4 territories!
Good catch on the movement though!
oh my 2 hours long i go to sleep first then hehe
If you arent going to move at least take the coin...
Can I pay the cost of the produced item even my workers is not already in that area?
