Jackie mentioned that the Traders seem underpowered. Well, apparently Stegmaier Games agrees. In their "Civilization adjustments" sheet they say you should start with two extra resources when playing the Traders.
I laughed but it's the kind of thing that annoys me when I sit down to explain a medium/heavy game. Do you wanna play or not? If yes, silence and listen up. These jokes make me feel like I am forcing the others to play.
@@pipos193 If everyone is silent while I'm explaining a game, I feel like I am doing a terrible job. I like when people ask questions and show interest in what I'm talking.
Not sure if it was mentioned (I might have missed it), but is also important to note than you can always CHOOSE to go into the next era, you don't have to continue playing an era until you can't take any more actions. So if you want to make sure to get the income bonus for being first to switch eras, you can do that.
We played this with four yesterday, and I won as the Inventors going heavy down the tech track (and beginning it again). I had some good luck in the cards to make it work. In the end, I didn't think I made any risky decisions, any difficult choices, and there wasn't a single laugh or memorable moment at the table all day. A big bust for me. I agree with Jackie about the game except for her description of it as "complex, meaty". It's about a medium-level for me in terms of complexity, and very light in terms of decision-making. It sure is purdy though.
I just started playing Tapestry and I love it. My board game group loves deep games. Tapestry has so many different options, and you can't really run away with the game with just one move or card. The more you play it the more you learn how to play it. The four random rolls for Science at the end of the track (which I did last game just to try it) is really a damp squid compared to other end of track benefits. Maybe if you got the result of each roll.
Played only 1 game so far, but had fun with it. Amazing production, the game flows pretty well, but does seem to hinge on what civilizations are in play and what Tapestry cards you get. 8/10 so far. Enjoyed watching this playthrough
Around 18:40 you mention a rule incorrectly. While the Tapestry card iconography does refer to the first of your neighbors, the other icon of figures with equal height STILL refers only to your NEIGHBORS, not “anyone at the table.” Page 4 states that neighbors are immediately to your left or right.
Lincoln forgot to take another good for filling up the sector after placing that gigantic lighthouse looking building @1:13:11. Since most other mistakes were pointed out, figured no one noticed this one :P

Its a really great game. The tapestry cards really do dictate how you will perform depending on the civ you are working with. But thats why each 2nd space on each track allow you a tapestry card. Relatively easy game with a LOT of strategy.
Shouldn't they be taking a tapestry card and a tile each income phase as they are exposed icons as listed in the rulebook? Edit: just noticed during Nikki's income phase they fixed it.

They aren’t taking a tile and a Tapestry card on their new era as part of the income matt. Under the Farm track, is a tile symbol and under armory is the Armory is a Tapestry card, just like era one, you take a territory tile and a Tapestry card eatery new era.
@@boardgamegeek I didn't finish watching before my wife came and wanted me to come out and play Viticulture. LOL!! We had already played Tapestry twice today!!!! Love it. I will finish watching tomorrow.....
I feel like they had the wrong players for this to succeed...Jackie and Rusty seem to prefer lighter games. Aaron and Dave seem like they would have been better suited towards this and would have perhaps showcased it better with more strategy behind their moves. Also I feel like the traders could have been better used early game to get resources rather than to simply hope someone conquers that territory. Early game it seems better to get resources and someone who conquers that tile which they would probably avoid anyway as Nikki clearly did. Even if they do conquer chances are you'd get the point die since early game resources are so valuable. I think Lincoln's experience with technology was just a misfire as the winner of the game we played focused on that track. This makes sense, as I know with our group, who are heavy gamers, we make mistakes in the most basic of games on first time playthrough. It's bound to happen in a game like Tapestry which is simple at face value (2 actions only you may do) but with so many offshoots of those actions. Good video and good first play through! (although I will say skipping your turn that one time was a bit more then a first time play through hahaha)
Nice game, just a bit too much convoluted and kind of fiddly. That being said, after you learn it in a game or 2 it looks like a pretty fun thematic game. However, watching the GAMENIGHT! crew play it is always fun! :D Thanks for the video!
Rolling just for VP is a bad idea. Even rolling late, should have given them an option because goods extend turns. In general people’s obsession with VP and monuments over income buildings and resources is a recipe for a low scoring game. Don’t have to finish to know that the winner won’t even need 200 points even though most can score almost 100 points in the final era alone, even from a bad starting hand/civ. There are huge bonuses at the end of each track so it is worth it after generating income to focus on one track and rush up it. If anyone does in this game they would destroy.

Don't they know that there isn't a single good guide to Tapestry out there?". Then… a miracle. As the video progressed into its second hour. The clouds part, and a ray of light kisses my chin. Finally. A good guide to Tapestry, maybe the best. "These guys deserve a fucking medal." I shout, and a smile reappears on my face and the boys'. A welcome return to normalcy, and the kids cheer once again. "Dad does that mean we can finally play?" The eldest asks. "No, it's 5 AM in the godamn morning." I retort. "But will we play tomorrow?" The youngest asks. "No, tomorrow we'll learn Twilight Imperium".
Just an opinion and personal preference. For me, Terraforming Mars is pretty straightforward as to WHEN you move things. With Tapestry, the four different tracks plus your own player mat, all of which trigger at different times and have nested actions, made this more complicated, at least for me. As we all said, though, it would doubtless get easier if you played it a lot. So it all depends on who you play with and how many different games you want to play. Only so much time and so many games out there. A lot of people will love this game.
I got bored with TM after some 50 plays. You are just grinding through a deck where you are probably going to discard more and more of the cards as you try to find a focus. A focus that is diluted by adding expansions. Sure, it does not have complex triggers, but frankly that makes it a worse engine builder (even compared to Gizmos) - each blue card is its own little action or trigger, each green card just provides icons and is dead otherwise, and then you have the "dance" to try and be the one who advances a track to where it gives a bonus. Winner is often either the one who managed to do Jovian or who focused on grabbing the most milestones. Underwater Cities is more fun to me, but perhaps a bit too complex for the general GameNight stream, too, if this is.
This game seems SUPER complicated. More complicated than Root & Scythe. Lol - I think that is because there are so many different actions happening. Especially when Jackie was doing her actions into her second era. So quick. Rusty, too. A lot of it is hard to understand. I can't wait to fully understand this game.
This doesn't seem to be for me. Among other things, all the technology seems really random, which does not give any feeling of progression or story. Out of the stone age into lithium ion batteries, if I understood that correctly? The whole create-your-own landscape feels similarly disconnected from reality.
Creatining the landscape doesn't bother me that much, you are exploring your civilization's surroundings after all which is totally unknown to you. But yeah, technology being random is off-putting for me too. It just doesn't make sense.
@@hawkeye137137 I saw a different playthrough, which sort of made more sense of it. You can start developing a technology early, but you still need certain prerequisites to take advantage of it. Although they were still exploring the world after space flight had been developed. Anyway, I got a better sense of the game play, so I see more of the appeal.
@@DeanOfDVD Yeah, I'm not sure of the specifics. The game says it starts at "the beginning of humankind", but maybe that's just when someone invents coffee...
I think people are going to get the wrong impression from listening to these final thoughts. Sounds like you have a table of great people, yes, but mostly people who don't like this weight class of game or genre. Their opinions are valid, but it's just not for them. This is one of the games of the year.
In my case, it wasn't the weight class. I like heavy Euros, but this wasn't for me. As I noted, I think a lot of people will like it. My opinions are there to help people decide whether it's for them or not.
Boardgames are so much fun, but yet games will appear that not everyone likes. This game was not for me. My cousin enjoyed it and it made a really nice gift for him.
To think that this sits at 2.8 on BGG. I think the 4 page rulebook is extremely deceiving. People look at this as gateway but it clearly isn’t. Should have simply doubled the length of the rulebook and called this a medium weight title.
Agreed! I also like many heavy Euros, and thought this game was rather tedious and finicky with a lot of unintuitive little things to remember. Like taking a good when you fill a region, or rolling the dice when you conquer. There's a difference between complex games where the complexity comes from deep choices in an intuitive rule set, and complex games where the complexity comes from having "lots of stuff". Not that there aren't choices to make in Tapestry, but the complexity more felt like it came from the volume of stuff.
Really want to play this one. However, Nicky is right. Game seems really fiddly. The painted miniatures don't fit the rest of the components and jack the price to $100. Wish the game did not have those tacky pieces and slash the price by $20.
But doesn't that go for every game with plastic pieces? You could replace them with cardboard tokens instead. But aesthetics is something that people care about.
I was very excited to play this game ..... till now. Just seems tedious and themeless. This is not a civilization game. Nobody even talked about what was happening when advancing on the tracks or gaining tapestry cards in terms of theme or story.
Unless you for sure know that this sort of abstract game with euro mechanics just 100% isn’t you thing.....I would really suggest that you play it at least once, hopefully with some experienced players to teach you, because it’s really quite fun. Don’t go out and buy it, but if you get the chance, definitely play it once or twice and see what you think. I feel that the civ theming is there, but it’s definitely abstract and not the typical tech tree that we’re all thinking of when we think of civ games, for sure. Once you get the hang of the upkeep of all the options and understand the iconography (which only takes a play or two to really get a groove) it all flows quite nicely and doesn’t feel tedious at all. I think a lot of that came from the players in this session having only 1 or two plays (did Rusty have many plays before, or was it just Lincoln who had played previously?) between all of them. For a game with such simple options, yet such depth of gameplay, to learn and play a 4 player game, with other relatively newcomers to the game, certainly made it seem much more challenging than it is.
@@Farstr1d3r Thanks for response. I see what you are saying and think you are right. pretty atypical. I'm not saying they are not entitled to their opinions and their experiences, but their criticisms are outliers, not the norm. It's a civ game with a lot of depth, and this is first impressions.
@@Nain1982 yes. From all the forums and FB groups I've read with early replies from gameplay reports, yes. The majority have been positive and not lukewarm. So, yeah, Mr Passive Aggressive.
@@mattlowder sorry hehe! well it's also wrong to believe they are outliers for disliking a game. The game is also over-hyped, it is a SM game. What matters is that they showed a playthrough for people to make an opinion based on that, and not on how they feel.
I often feel that way with this particular BGG show/segment and I think it’s mostly due to how ALLLLLLL the rules are explained from the get go...makes it seem tedious listening to 10-20 minutes of rules and explanations before a game is started. That said, we own this game in our family and LOVE it. It’s definitely abstract, with a very loose civ theme, but lots of fun and plenty of replayability and variation.
The idea that when you pass you advance an era and don't need to wait for the other players to pass to be able to play again is new and I would like to see it implemented in other games

Underwater Cities is more fun to me, but perhaps a bit too complex for the general GameNight stream, too, if this is.
lmao, for the first five minutes, I thought Rusty was on about errors then realised he meant era's
It's the American accent I think (assuming you're not also American). I've made the same mistake many a time.
@@simonpryor877 definitely the American accent, but we have the same problem sometimes here in the UK
Jackie looks like a female Lincoln :D
this game lack of resources....... its pretty impossiblr to finish one line e you score too little points

David Carroll Does it say you’re in the Stone Age or are you assuming that based on the fire tapestry with which everyone starts?
@@DeanOfDVD Yeah, I'm not sure of the specifics. The game says it starts at "the beginning of humankind", but maybe that's just when someone invents coffee...
David Carroll or possibly a Keurig machine...
@@JackieFox1976 respect.
Love how Cthulhu lurks behind Lincoln's shoulder.
Preorder would’ve gotten you it for $20 cheaper
@@kyleking2410 Will be cheaper than that by the end of the year.
But doesn't that go for every game with plastic pieces? You could replace them with cardboard tokens instead. But aesthetics is something that people care about.
@@TorIverWilhelmsen I agree. The minis and resources in Scythe look great. These buildings look like @$$.
Oops, Rusty has a big Cheeto smear on his shirt...
/skulks away
I was very excited to play this game ..... till now. Just seems tedious and themeless. This is not a civilization game. Nobody even talked about what was happening when advancing on the tracks or gaining tapestry cards in terms of theme or story.
It is quite abstract but we never felt that the game is tedious. We all enjoyed it.
I was also concerned about things like .... achieving space travel before inventing glasses .... but Jamie explained that well when he said playing games are more about creating memorable moments rather than forgettable linear actions.
kmichaelmace absolutely! I hope you get the chance to play and do actually enjoy it! Cheers!
I was busy for a moment, not present, and I heard "Chucky"! Sorry, Jackie...
Oh, I like the comparison! At least for GameNight!
What a crappie experience to get ads every 5-8 minutes
Great now I got one 3 minutes later, this is stupid.
@@odditie Wow! RUclips is messed up. I will fix this now. We usually never allow more than 3 ads in an episode. Thanks for pointing this out.-Lincoln
Second!
First! (Moronic)
That is one clunky anticlimactic way to end a game. Seriously should have rethought that somehow. Everything else looks great though.
Pretty lukewarm responses
pretty atypical. I'm not saying they are not entitled to their opinions and their experiences, but their criticisms are outliers, not the norm. It's a civ game with a lot of depth, and this is first impressions.
@@mattlowder says the speaker of the people?
@@Nain1982 yes. From all the forums and FB groups I've read with early replies from gameplay reports, yes. The majority have been positive and not lukewarm. So, yeah, Mr Passive Aggressive.
@@mattlowder sorry hehe! well it's also wrong to believe they are outliers for disliking a game. The game is also over-hyped, it is a SM game. What matters is that they showed a playthrough for people to make an opinion based on that, and not on how they feel.
@@Nain1982 SM games are often overhyped. Did you like this more or Wingspan more? Did either hit your fun button? Cheers!
This game seems tedious and uninspired.
I often feel that way with this particular BGG show/segment and I think it’s mostly due to how ALLLLLLL the rules are explained from the get go...makes it seem tedious listening to 10-20 minutes of rules and explanations before a game is started. That said, we own this game in our family and LOVE it. It’s definitely abstract, with a very loose civ theme, but lots of fun and plenty of replayability and variation.
this game is mediocre at best, brings nothing new
The idea that when you pass you advance an era and don't need to wait for the other players to pass to be able to play again is new and I would like to see it implemented in other games
Sigh... does a gane have to have something new to be good? Anyway, i still agree. This is a game of moving up tracks, it looks pretty dry to me though id probably be happy to play it if asked.
Toooo much for our group. I mean we can play it but it would only prbly played once as there are more enjoyable games we play in our group i feel...this is just too much... I mean it takes over half an hr to explain the game... Sheeesh. Good luck finding s gaming group for this...maybe once like i said... But then its off to another game.
Tapestry is just like other Stonemaier games, over-hyped and overrated.
jumpyg1258 , don’t forget ‘over hated’ by people who haven’t played them....
