  • Walter Horton, better known as Big Walter Horton or Walter "Shakey" Horton, (April 6, 1917 -- December 8, 1981) was an American blues harmonica player. A quiet, unassuming and essentially shy man, Horton is remembered as one of the premier harmonica players in the history of blues. Willie Dixon once called Horton "the best harmonica player I ever heard."

Oh Yeah! That's how to play blues harp. One of the very greatest of the greats. If you're learning harp, listen and also watch how brilliantly Big Walter's hand movements change his tone and produce sound effects. Watch how he blows into the harp to play some of the highest notes and stay in key. What a magnificent player!

Big Walter is my favorite harp player of all time. He had his own signature sound... he didn't sound like Little Walter or either of the Sonny Boy Willliamsons. Other players of his era, be it SBW 2, Little Walter, Junior Wells, or James Cotton, still had elements of SBW1 in their playing. Not so with Walter Horton. Horton had that soft fade out at the of his lines that made his playing instantly recognizable. His work with Elmore James and John Lee Hooker was amazing. He's kinda the Robert Junior Lockwood of the blues harp. Listen to his work behind Hooker on "Boom Boom" from the first Blues Brothers movie. Three notes, and you know it's Walter Horton.
