I disagree with SG. Some degree of regulation and oversight is required in the digital platform. When you say that FB and Twitter need to censor content and suspend accounts, we should also be open to Govt. agencies to arbitrate. That is not to say that they should abuse it to appease the govt. of the day and curtail dissent. That is to say that people like Arnab (yes Republic is heavily into social media) & Kangana, who spew venom and divisiveness should be disciplined. The reason some of the editors are concerned - and rightly so - is due the fact that the most authoritative govt. BJP is in power. But again, SG himself has said that we need strong institutions for a thriving democracy.

Problem is Twitter blocking someone's account after repeated violations, pandering of fake news and breaking their rules is something all social media companies can and do regularly. That account is a personal account, and any person is equal in a democracy. Trump is not a god, and not above your average joe outside the USA. If he is banned from twitter, he can still sign up for other social medias, or make a new account with other alias/email without making it public. While, this WHATABOUTiSM you brought up is apples to oranges.
Twitter Blocking Donald trump is regulation of ONE persons account, for repeated violation of rules of their website. This affects him, but does not stop him from signing up on other social media. There are some like parler where you can openly be racist too, and a lot of racists are going over there.
Govt regulation of social media will affect ALL People in that country, everyone's social media account, and without a proper data protection law, everyone's privacy will be at stake. This is not the same. You can not just sign up in a new social media or create a new account to bypass this. This affects public at large.

Mr. Gupta, despite many difference of opinions I respect your work but I will argue in support of this law bcos of following reasons :-
    1) Every media organisations is flaunting their biases including "left leaning The hindu editorial". Media houses are becoming more like soft/hard propganda ppl & less about news. digital platform is easiest way to propagate.
    2) Many big media houses used to get political patronage ( including many relaxation in law) .many paid articles are written ,why their accountability should be questioned ?
    3) Now we know agenda driven ott script has been written on the name of artistic expression & FOE.
    4) Giant social media players are trying to intervene in democratic set up as per their moral standard ( Facebook vs Australia gov, taking sides in recent Americans elections)
FOE is not absolute in india constitution.

If all The Print wants to do is to publish videos, it's much better to use RUclips than to create another app which is expensive to develop/maintain, difficult to acquire customers and engage them. RUclips is already available on all platforms, has an entire army of developers, testers, UI designers, dev-ops, SREs, product managers etc. Why not leverage that?
Unless you have use case that is not supported by existing platforms, why would you reinvent the wheel. For The Print, it would be much wiser to focus on providing quality content which is their core competency. Not every business needs to become an IT shop.

Shekharji, I am following ur “Cut the Clutter “ episodes since 2019 dec. and love the real news u serve on a platter. I am a subscription holder from my daughters portal. Honestly I feel the Modi govt. must thank u personally forwarded having brought them back from the brink in case of the economy and help them to step out of their predictable Congress+.... budgets. They have obviously taken off several pages off ur several episodes to draw up the latest budget. But I don’t think they should take the credit of the success of the budget alone. They should share it with the Print as all are ideas proposed by u in a series of episodes on the indian economy in the past year. Instead, the govt. seems to be penalizing the digital media for doing their leg work. That’s a damn hypocrisy, which has brought my respect for Modiji a notch down and is discouraging me from watching any more “Mann ki Baats”. If the press executive order is implemented in toto, it would bode ill for India as a democracy. Gagging real news is a crime in democracy and I hope PILs are filed against this move of the I&B ministry. Scrutinizing news articles by the govt before releasing by the digital media would amount to instances when the govt can pressurize the digital news agency to twist the news to favor govt. agenda’s thus taking advantage of the platforms world wide loyal audience. Hence, even if it’s a whitewash on a real situation, subscribers like me will swallow it thinking that since it’s being supported by the Print and Shekhar, must be true and fair reporting. Also, end to end encryption disruption would mean putting an individual citizens data in govt., hands leading to the beginning of a surveillance state. Also, it is creating hurdles for the news digital platforms by increasing their expenditure overheads, tying them up with famous red tape in the form of bureaucratic intervention. In a way the govt is killing the golden goose who is doing precious research for National interests and providing it in the form of a readymade capsule. Seems to be the same sulking attitude displayed in the arrests of Disha Ravi etc. Point is a strong govt need not flex muscles at every little opposition or to camouflage the fact that they are using the research of the Print

I will be frank, these rules are a necessity for India, if India wants to industrialize then India cannot bow down to political correctness and western liberalism. People wonder why India can’t develop like China and the answer is simple, Chinese people don’t protest and send fake news against infrastructure projects and economic reform. Misinformation done by opposition on media is what lead to protests against progress in India whether it was against FDI, farm laws, SEZ protests, Singur industrial zone protests,Labour laws, land reforms, Mullom etc. Now if we protest against everything new how can we be a superpower. Thanks to misinformation shared on internet like how Covid doesn’t affect farmers, how MSP will go away, how corporates will control trade led to massive protests. These laws are necessary if India is to ever progress

First, find news and the deem it fit to print. You have published a half an hour episode based on your own opinion. Your comparison of journalism with medicine is appalling and reeks of your high handedness. This is not just for you. There is a need to bring the larger social media under a common ambit of governance which gives a proper grievance redressal. Also, lest you forget, Freedom of Speech is a right as a privilege and not absolute. I have delved into a half an hour incoherent cry for protest to protect the Print from accountability. The appetite for criticism is what allows this sort of content to stay online. Your reach is not at the behest of Google or Twitter or Facebook. It is at the behest of the government. Stop talking about journalism in a democracy when half of your content is run as opinions to safeguard your organization. You are intimidated by accountability which is ironic because journalism needs to have a spine enough to act as the fourth pillar of democracy. The colonial hangover is the Print's favorite movie. Flash news, we got independence in 1947.

Link-to-link encryption provides privacy but hard to implement and has its own vulnerabilities.
Cheap solutions is to use The Onion Router (TOR) network which bounces encrypted message from across the world. FBI , CIA they all provide this feature to provide true anonymity to sender.

So what I've taken from this I too would like to question a few things
    1. You said that journalism as a profession and editors/journalists should be respected and allowed to "self regulate" you said you would accept citizen journalist when people accept citizen lawyers and doctors, we've seen journalists accuse other journalist be loyal to certain political parties why can't we accuse you of the same, what makes you so above bias and your self regulation so impeccable, is it because you're "trained" in it, even police men and politicians are not supposed to indulge in corruption because it's in their jobs not to, but that doesn't happen, if you accuse a person of burgling your house would let him pass judgement on himself (self regulate) or would you rather have a set of rules that say "hey burgling is a no-go" why should we citizens trust journalists to self regulate fairly, also I'd much rather have a government institution take responsibility for curtailing a fair and true article long before I'd agree with press on publishing a factually incorrect one, you might be able to say sorry and move on but what about the lives ruined by the wrong news printed. If worded carefully even apologies don't sound like apologies these days.
    2. You are against laws, oversight committees and rules because they make your job difficult, aren't you supposed to be "hard working" journalists or is it because it forces you to meet higher standards
    3. You say you'd rather not get into the "minutiae" of the act but that's what literal facts are, are we supposed to just take your word for it, why not explain it concisely but truly.

Also, these rules are yet another reminder of the Modi government's obsession with its shock and awe policy. The fact that a change as sweeping as the one unveiled by the government didn't go through any parliamentary or public scrutiny and was rather imposed by an executive fiat, reflects the tenuous importance it gives to governance by consensus. Be that as it may be, I am eagerly waiting for student subscriptions at ThePrint. That'll be my way of strengthening ThePrint. I am sure many others would do the same. More power to ThePrint.

Mr. Shekhar Gupta should know better than quoting a biased and anti BJP source like The Hindu. There is not one initiative.... I repeat, not one initiative by BJP that the Hindu appreciated. Period!!
My request to Mr. Gupta, please don't make the mistake of going The Hindu way. There's a reason why so many people have absolutely stopped reading it.
    HUMBLE REQUEST!!

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out-
Because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Farmers and I did not speak out-
Because I was not a Farmer.
Then they came for The Print & Shekar Gupta and there was no one left to speak for us.

shekhar gupta (when Modi liberalizes anything) -> A much needed, commendable, reformative move BY THE MODI GOVT! credit where it is due!
shekhar gupta (when Modi restricts/curbs liberties) -> blames the rotten spoiled brat, control freak bureaucracy that always pulls back a forward moving nation!
    i love shekhar gupta

This only reminds me of the German quote.
"First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out-because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out- because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me-and there was no one left to speak for me."
SG was in full support of farm laws, even when the farmers(who know their profession) were against it. Now when things turn against journalist, you are complaining of government's evil hands.
For those who still support this government, wait till they come to you.
