The network didn't think that Jon Hamm was sexy. That is the dumbest thing I have heard in months.

And apparently at first audition the others thought he was too sexy ! You can’t win

Smart guy, great writer - "Mad Men" is up there with the best and the casting of Jan Hamm was inspired.

This is the most enlightening interview I've seen on the subject. And all it took was getting the writer talking.

It's so refreshing hearing honest, candid commentary from a big-time showrunner. How often do you get that? Not very often. Such great little anecdotes in here. And Hamm must be a terrible auditioner if the reaction was "not sexy enough." Cuz that guy is pretty damn sexy. Ya know, from what I've heard.

they almost didn't cast Al Pacino for The Godfather. He was so close to being replaced

I've always thought that this English actor that almost got Don role was Clive Owen. However, Owen played on big screen, in major films in early 2000s though. Television would be a step back for him then.

People don't understand that it would have been a great show regardless of who played Draper. If it wasn't Hamm it would be someone similar, maybe a bit better, maybe a little worse, or just different. Look at his - Jon Hamm's - other appearances prior to Mad Men, they all suck. It's all about the writing and the crew, actors are puppets for the most part. "Wear this, stand there, now say what we told you to say!" Brilliant, this man deserves an Emmy! Please...

I can't blame you, you're just trying to validate your overrated profession. I guess it's just a coincidence that actors "suck" on some movies and are "great" in others. There may be a handful of actors who are able to impersonate their characters - Daniel Day Lewis, Ed Norton and Guy Pierce come to mind - everyone else is doing a caricature masked by an extended version of themselves. Even the worst actor in the world can't ruin a good film, case in point, Shattered Glass w/ Hayden Christensen.
