  • Here's a special compilation featuring my favourite turboprop aircraft, the RCAF CC-115 de Havilland Canada DHC-5 Buffalo! This video features all the takeoffs I have filmed, and includes some impressive STOL takeoff actionand some nice vortices too. It's always great to see the Royal Canadian Air Force operating the CC-115 into CZNL.
This video features four of the RCAF's six CC-115 DHC5 Buffalo's

Love how the DHC-5 lifts off without rotation!! So much lift.

Graham Shea Straight wing aircraft can takeoff with no rotation, given enough runway. This aircraft only needs a large parking lot to do so.

I've got about 1,500 hrs. on these machines; 1979 - 1982 in Summerside, PEI, 413 Sqn. Great aircraft; some of the most fun I've ever had, with my clothes on. They're the only bird for the job in the Rocks; outside the helos. Great videos. Thanks for the memories.

Large aircraft. It was the main cargo plane of the Brazilian Air Force to the Amazon region for many years, due to its ability to make short landings and takeoffs.

@@TheHDAviation yea they are a beautiful aircraft. Very unique sound and look. They had some sar techs parachute down into Powell airport a few months ago. Always neat to see it flying with the rear door open, imagining how cool the view from there must be.
I've noticed the government has a beautiful red DHC-8 100 that is used for surveillance, it travels up the coast once or twice a month. Need to try and catch it on video or at least get some pictures sometime.

The takeoff is amazing and bizarre at the same time. Just floats off the ground, lol. I also seem to recall a Twin Otter stol demo where the takeoff was very similar as well, no noticeable nose rotation - just float off the runway. AND, the Dash 7s also could take off in a similar fashion too.
Another unique aspect is the low hum sound of the motors. The General Electric T64 turns a very slow and large prop, giving it that low, vibrating sound. There's a few other aircraft powered by the same motor (Aeritalia G222 and US1 amphibian) but those are also rare, and retired already.

    • @TheHDAviation

Interesting to watch how they rotate it off the ground. if you watch the elevator it goes level at the initial ground roll then you can see the pilot flick it up just for a second or two then back to level. That appears to be enough to get it airborne. Very cool!!
