My cousin a high level judo guy and bouncer in the 70s was sneak attacked on the platform and out in front headlock in bent over position and he told me the guy was super strong on drugs and drunk. My cousin said he had one chance only cause he's super strong so he did the tomenage and escaped instantly. He said without judo he would have been dead today.

Judo is super efficient for self defence, much more than people think. The ability to control another person’s body through balance etc.
Love the sport vids on here but it would be great to see more Judo self defence vids from you, the simple judo logic you used for these techniques is far better than most of the actual intended ‘self defence’ systems out there.
    Great vid 👍🏻👍🏻

Agree 💯. Also I did knife fighting and seemed to always end up in a typical judo throw mid way of the sequence or knife defense sequence. As a judo guy unloved knife fighting training 😆

Honestly the subway is the one place that I feel most likely to ever get into a 'street fight' in. Way more so than the actual streets, where I can try to walk away while deescalating. Those psychos on the train won't have any of that.

I remember that when I was a teenager, I was bullied on a bus, and was pushing the bullies away, trying to keep them all in check in front of me... then I was dispatched by an old lady that hit me from behind with her cane. She gave me a serious trashing on the back and on the head, shouting stuff about how I was disrespectful of the elderly and lacking any morals...
I lost and was shamed by bystanders who took the old lady's side.
The old lady won, gargling herself in her own self-righteousness fantasy.
    The bullies went away laughing.
... So the best technique for fighting on a bus would have been to keep an eye on self-righteous people who don't read the situation properly.

If you made your own instructional on that especially setups/grip fighting aspect I would buy it! The Underhook overlaps with a lot of wrestling and would make takedowns easier in the gi esp for someone who is not a judo expert

This is dumb. First of all like with all such things, situational awareness is your best defense. If you should find yourself grappling on the subway, you probably were paying more attention to your phone than your environment. Second of all, no offense but you've probably never gotten into an actual scuffle in the subway if you think any of this will work in a crowded environment full of obstacles like poles. What you SHOULD do is grab the lapels of the jacket or shirt and just stiff-arm. It takes minimum effort from the person doing it and conversely maximum effort for the person trying to break through. Yes there is a judo throw that specifically addresses a stiff-arming opponent, but it is unlikely a random subway person would know it let alone be proficient in it. As anyone with a bit of judo experience knows, you can easily move to another grip from there that would put an end to the confrontation if it escalates from there but I won't mention that because I don't want to be responsible for idiots misusing it. Don't believe me? Try it for yourself in your dojo next class. Just grab your Uki's lapels and pretend you're Frankenstein and invite them to try to break through your stance directly. Bet you they can't. And you can easily keep this up for half an hour until your opponent gets completely exhausted.
