For someone to gift you items from their past life is a wonderful thing. My grandfather worked on the LA&SL for 57 years. You would think he would have saved some more memorabilia for me.
I have 3 BRT Union pins, 2 switch lock keys, and his old Elgin pocket watch.
I wonder what the standard retirement gift would have been in 1960 at the Union Pacific?? Between him and my Grandmother, they got 33 years out of the Railroad Retirement.
Thanks, Mark. Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Nice video. I can relate to your Poppa passing. My Poppa passed away last July and with him being a carpenter he had hundreds of old woodworking tools in his garage.I myself had 100's of HO railcars. I gave them to someone I knew in Winnemucca whos son was into railroads. I then moved t Palmdale and retired from the U.P. a couple of years ago. I need to get to the Tehachapi museum and see if they will take my app. 4,000 rail photos. The Railroad Retirement Board in Covina has a bunch of S.P. maps in their office. It's nice to leaf through them while you wait to talk to someone.

Something you might try to help with your brain fog is nicotine patches or gum. My son was helped by this after his bout with covid. You use it for about 2 weeks to a month. I talked with him last night and he is better.
The SP lock is the type that was used on switches and other things all over the railroad.

Are you going to be doing a model railroad layout in the future?

No, sir. Even if I wanted to, I don't have the room. That's all taken up by guitars, dirtbikes, and the Harley! All the modeling equipment has gone to a young friend who is very much into model railroading.

The Great Locomotive Chase. The Western & Atlantic was the railroad that James Andrews stole the General and was pursued by William Fuller on the handcars and the locomotive Texas. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_and_Atlantic_Railroad#Great_Locomotive_Chase A member of Andrews team, Private Jacob Parrott was awarded the very first Congressional Metal of Honor for his heroic efforts in helping to steal the train at Big Shanty, Georgia but more specifically because of the torture he received after being captured. All military (19 of 20) members of the team were eventually (as late as July of 2024) awarded the CMA EXCEPT for Andrews because he was a civilian.
