- Yoel and Mari Eat Ethiopian Food for the First Time and WHOA... THAT WAS SPICY!!!
We went to US' largest Ethiopian immigrant community, Washington DC.
The food was INTERESTING to say the least! Watch us to see what we think.

One time I was eating Ethiopian food and an Ethiopian person was laughing at me because my face turned red 😂
HAAHAH! I think my bathroom turned red after jejeje
I've worked at a company
over 23 Years owned by an Ethiopian.
Over the years
Him and His Family have
Always treated Me Great.
What type of company was it?! Amazing. Happy to see immigrants do well :)
@YoelAndMari I Dispatch at
a Medical Transportation company.
We take people to Their medical appointments, dialysis treatments, seniors to the store, etc...
@@csw3287 Sounds like a very rewarding job.
Injera is the bomb. I know it is somewhat sour due to the fermentation but the teff grain it is made from is an ancient, ancient crop. I love Ethiopian food. Hope everyone tries some.
YES! It's like a sourdough crepe lol. Delicious.
@@jeffers0315 The absolutely best part of an Ethiopian meal served on those big platters is sopping up the soaked injera that served as the "base" of the meal with more injera!
One of the best perks of America is all the food from around the world. There is absolutely nowhere else in the world that you can get the global variety of food that you can in America, nowhere.
THIS. Food and music.
You are brave to dip the sauce without taking a little sample first! Good for you, just get all in that dish! I had a coworker in LA who was from Ethiopia and damn, her lunches always smelled so good. She uses scotch bonnet peppers in everything and I didn't dare try her food because she warned me ahead of time. She can eat a scotch bonnet like a pickle and have no effect. I'm so happy to see you both being adventurous and enjoy yourselves while in DC.
I used to go to an Ethiopian restaurant in Berkeley, California during the ‘70s, and it was always a delicious experience.
We always got the array of meats, stews, and sauces, served on a large plate, that can be easily rotated.
Unlimited spongy bread is utilized instead of utensils.
Ethiopian honey wine pairs well with the food.
The servers wore traditional garb.❤❤
@susanbowman6652 I would love to know the name of the restaurant. If it’s still around, I would love to go. I’m always down for some amazing Ethiopian food!!
@@rebeccamd7903 I now live in Costa Rica, so I searched Blue Nile in Berkeley, and unfortunately, it closed in 2007.
Gone, but not forgotten.
Your English is getting so much better ......Keep practicing
Give Salvadorean food (Pupusas and more) a try while your in Washington DC & Silver Spring MD. If you venture further into Maryland--have some Crab Cakes
We will!!!! there’s tons in Los Angeles!
Thoroughly enjoyable. You can always ask every restaurant you ever go to, make the food less spicy.
As far as other foods: Persian food is fantastic. What they do with beef, chicken and rice is amazing.
You guys are so cute together and brave to try something new & very different from what you're used to! My late aunt was married to a lovely man from Addis, so I grew up with and love Ethiopian food - but I can see some of it being challenging for people not used to the spice levels. I'm glad that you found things you enjoyed eating - there are a lot of great Ethiopian recipes, and I hope you have a wonderful time in DC ❤
The bread is made from a grain called Teff. It is sour and a bit of an acquired taste. I love it!
All Ethiopian food that I've tried has been delicious. So much flavor. Injera bread is so yummy to sop with, but in its own it can taste quite sour sometimes. I am not vegetarian, but I think those dishes are the best with injera.
thanks for more info on taste of & use of injera bread.
I suggest trying Moroccan food where they eat on the floor and wash their hands off with steaming water and towels between eating. It’s a wonderful experience.
I would love to see you try Korean food,. I am not sure if there is a North Korean restaurant in America, but maybe someone else will know. I heard Ham Hung in LA has Northeastern Korean food.
I would also love to see you and Joel have a conversation with a NK refugee if the opportunity surfaces.
Injera is very nutritious and because it is fermented very good for your gut!! Very high in fibre and minerals too.
Yes. That’s why it has the wonderful sour taste.
Now I'm in the mood for Ethiopian food. I love it!
You guys are in for a treat. I love Ethiopian bread.
I moved away from DC two years ago, and I miss Ethiopian food so much I learned to cook it for myself! I have to order the injera online though because I haven't mastered that yet.
how do you make the bread!??!! Or can I get it on Amazon!?
Uchenna - the best Ethiopian food in southern Colorado. Just had to share! 😁
Try Indian and Mediterranean. Both so delicious and healthy!
I was in Ethiopia for 2 weeks back in 2009. I could not get used to the cuisine and couldn’t take that injeera bread either. Loved that you gave it a shot though.
Hello, Yoel & Mari.
May i suggest using salt to cut the spiciness of any sauce. Put a big pinch of salt into your mouth & swish it in your mouth until the heat goes away. Should go away really quickly. You're welcome
Watching you guys eat makes me hungary! Try Indian, Thai, Morrocan or Greek food!
I don’t like injera either. I would always get Fish tibs in atlanta at Desta. Miss that place
YES, please do more videos like this.
I grew up eating Ethiopian food in Berkeley. I have zero idea what anything's called but I remember eating with the sponge bread and all that and enjoying it. I'll have to see if there's any place near where I live now - it's been years.
Injera is the bread. It's amazing with the stews they make. ❤
Ethiopians make a bread that I think has black cumin seed. It is so good. In my old church some Ethiopians would sometimes attend. I found that the heat level might be hot but believe me it’s tamed down to what they serve themselves. Hmmm now I realize I haven’t had it in a long time. I need to find some.
You guys need to take Yoel hunting! The ability to set out into the wilderness with your rifle and put food on your table is a super American principle.
Next time I suggest the combo platter. You get a little of everything and it gives you a good cross-section of Ethiopian flavors.
I was hoping to take you to my local Ethiopian place in LA at some point. Everything I order is zero spice. Next time. ❤you two.
Omg love you. We can go again just us no content ❤️❤️❤️. Love you so so so much
Glad to see another video.
"besides the largest population of corrupt politicians" gurrrllll
I love Ethiopean injera bread!
Hey, try Polish food. Find a Polish restaurant. Try perogies, nalesniki, halushski, stuffed cabbage, smoked sausage.
It'll twist your minds as what to do with simple foods. It'll take you to another dimension.
I love the video edits you guys do, they always look so cool. What editing software/program do you use?
I LOVE Ethiopian food
Indian food , lots of flavour and you can ask for mild spice , Tikka Marsala or Butter Chicken , pakora starter, spicy onions (they are sweet)
In medieval times, there was an ancient oversea trade route from Egypt to the Malabar Coast in western India that ran through Ethiopia. I wonder if the sambusa has any common origins with the Indian samosa (either Ethiopia -> India or India -> Ethiopia). They look pretty much the same, and the name similarity is quite the coincidence.
Clearly samosa/sambosa are related, but samosas usually are meat-free. Same idea though.
Hola primitos. Yo si he disfrutado la comida etíope ya que tuve un amigo de allá y me resultó muy interesante, muy diferente y además muy rica
Un abrazo a los dos.
! God bless you !
You are very brave. I would have to tell them no spices. Even though I'm from the US, I could never handle really spicy things. My brother-in-law loves it.
I love Ethiopian food!
We gotta try more!!!
Try Korean BBQ...Bulgogi...You'll love it.
I've always wanted to try this.
I've been to that very same restaurant and sat at that very same table and ordered almost the same thing 😂. The chicken was definitely amazing but yeah spicy AF!
Mi gente ..Buen provecho ! Un abrazo desde Los Angeles . Love you guys .
They have many very yummy things in their cuisine.
I had just eaten before watching this video but watching it made me hungry again.
Yoel is becoming the Cuban Mark Weins.
I thought Ethiopian food would just be a bowl with three grains of rice in it.
I would also try the Halaa butcher shops. The kobabs are fantastic.
I LOVE spicy food. Makes me want to try it.
I knew about this enclave but never tried it. I heard it’s pretty good. Yoel should really try real Chinese food not the stuff here that was changed. It’s oddly hard to find unless you are in the know. DC has a dim sum restaurant that’s hidden in Arlington and a Chinese seafood restaurant on the streets. Do not order lobster as it’s always market price and yeah it’s always a surprise. It was $35 a pound last time I was there. Also down in Virginia there is a Michelin three star Chinese chef who actually gave up his three stars to start a quiet restaurant doing food his way, I forget his name but he was on Anthony bourdain no reservations once. The restaurant is super popular as it’s packed every night. The chef really doesn’t care for being acclaimed just that he’s doing food his own way and with his family’s support.
I ate some flatbread brought to work by my Somali coworkers - for me it had no taste at all! It looked similar to what you were eating!
It’s not really a countries or ethnic food that I was thinking of you two to try. But I always thought, I would love to see Yoels reaction to Crumbl cookies! Maybe you two can do a taste test reaction to a week of Crumbl cookies. Because they change their menu every week.
Wait this is a cute idea!!! We’ve never had them
I usually order kitfo which is a raw beef dish.
You should try Korean BBQ. I think you would both LOVE it!
God bless you,. my children...
Now try it in NYC. Phenomenal! Delicioso!
I think it’s goat inside that dumpling thing. Likely from a live animal distributor and killed that morning. Not unusual as Orlando has one hidden in an industrial area. Lots of chickens, cattle, and goats go through. They also sell lamb. Restaurants tend to go to get meat for the day. They have the use everything policy of using every part of the animal they can in some way.
I understand y'all come from a small place in Cuba. My in-laws are from Havana & the Cuban mountains. They all eat jalapeno peppers & hot stuff inc other spices. My children took after their Cuban family by also loving spicy & hot foods. Me, I don't hardly even do black pepper from the table. My children & their's love Takis .. which is way up there on the heat scale. So the area y'all r from .. maybe they don't do spices and/or ur families but Our families in Havana & the mountains love love the heat. Ur listeners will think that all Cubans don't eat spices which is simply not true. Maybe u could clarify that better when ur talking about how u & Yoel don't eat spices.
Greek and Lebonese food is delicious. Indian food is delicious, Thai is spicy but delicioys, but the best , well come to Louisiana and have some good seafood.
The one time I had it was in LA and it was delicious!
If you don't like spicy food, maybe you should try British cuisine next ;-)
It surprises me that Cuban food isn't spicy. Especially since that's so much Latin culture there. I lived in Mexico a couple of years and dang their food is spicy
Always check with the wait staff to avoid extra spicy mistakes. 🥵
Find some Tongan friends and ask them to make you OTAI (o-tie) to drink and PANI PO-PO (pan-ee poh-poh) to eat. If you like coconut, you will like those foods.
OMG Where are Tongans in America?
@@YoelAndMari 😄 Everywhere. There are a lot in Arizona. Lots and lots in Utah. Soo many in California. Where are you located?
I love Ethiopian food but not a fan of the injera bread ieither a bit too sour for my taste but I like the texture. However my favorite is the Kitfo.
El pan se llama injera.Y si,es comida picante.
Ethiopian bread is not weird - I never heard anyone describe it that way. I find it great to sop up the juices/sauces.
You want a challenge? Try Filipino food - start with diniguan and balut. Respectively, pig blood stew and a partially formed embryo still in the egg shell.
No one wants to eat balut!!!!
@@judykeown Exactly. I wanted to see if Yoel and Mari would take the challenge. Me being part Filipino, I would never eat balut or diniguan.
@@Haupialani lol yet you want others to eat it!!!
@@judykeown Of course. They asked for another place to try so I offered.
English is very hard to learn. Good progress, Yoel. 👍
Try Chinese dim sum next tea and dumplings
I got giardia from an Ethiopian restaurant and I thought it was gross not using utensils the entire time.
hope you can make it to KC!! lots of good food and fun things to do!!!
Omgggg I heard the bbq is amazing!
@@YoelAndMari YESSSSS!!!! its absolutely amazing stuff!!! Mix in some Tailgating in the Fall at Arrowhead with the Smokers and Pits going and you got a slice of heaven!
Thai food. Is really yummy
There a huge tongs and somoan in az have them do pig roasted in the ground and some of those food you in az alot
Side note Mari. I love your hair color.
Thank you amor!
I have had Cuban food in the DMV. Some are alright--but not as good as my wife's friend's cooking who is from Cuba.
Have you tried a Brazilian rodízio style restaurant yet?
Please give Polish food…,!
I promise you will not be disappointed.
Thank you for your wonderful videos.👍🏾💙🤍❤️
Please try Japanese food. It’s not spicy and you’ll get to eat sushi again. 😂 Also Thai and Vietnamese food but they can be spicy so maybe get the mild versions.
Hey, yoel and mari. I want yall to try creole or cajun food in Louisiana. I think yall would highly enjoy it.
Really want to go to New Orleans. When is the best month?
Go around August September. It's starts to cool down and the humidity won't be so bad. Best thing to do is find mom and pops diners. They are the hidden gems.
Turkish food is good.. but I've only had it in Turkey.
All you can eat Korean BBQ. You are missing out. 😢
You definitely need to try Persian food andd Greek food.
OMG YESSSSSS
Thank you. Keep going. Viet Namize was odd for me. But keep going. ALL good. I used to like Indian. But that was always a little high in the curry on EVERYTHING. They just had Nad bread to wash it down.
And Thai is just HOT!
Never trusted sushi, for worms. Like fish though, cooked.
You ate the african food and I did it to. The african food which one I ate was a couscous. You have to do the video 📹 about couscous.
Don't drink water to calm the hot spice. Drink something dairy instead ... or hot tea.
❤
lol 😂did you hear that? Mari, said that DC had a bunch of corrupted politicians 🎉
As a fellow Arizonan, I wonder what you think of Mexican food if you don’t like spicy?
Seems a lot of Indian influence.
Has Yoel ever had Thai food? I think he'd like it but it can be spicy so you might not. Some dishes are not especially hot though they all have spices.
Philippines 🇵🇭 🇵🇭 🇵🇭 🇵🇭 🇵🇭 🇵🇭 🇵🇭 🇵🇭 🇵🇭 🇵🇭 🇵🇭 🇵🇭 🇵🇭 🇵🇭 FOOOOOOODS
Have you guys done Indian food yet? Butter Chicken? Chicken Tikka Marsala?
Hi, guys 😊. Years ago, my sister and brother-in-law took me to an amazing Cuban restaurant in D.C. Did you get to visit any when you were there? Take care and have a fantastic 4th of July next week! 🎆🇺🇲
we did go to one!! Mi Cuba? In Petsworth i believe. Was it that one ?
@YoelAndMari I can't remember the name of the restaurant. It was in 1976! The restaurant was in downtown D.C. and we ate out in front of it on a patio. It was a beautiful evening in late September. My brother-in-law told me about the Cuban refugees in Washington, D.C. He worked for the State Department and really respected how hard working they were and what they contributed to society in the States.
You need to try Indian food now... Have them make it less spicy, though!
Most Ethiopian places can tailor the amount of spice so ask ahead of time!
Hopefully we are talking about HEAT here, not spice per se. They could certainly tone down the red pepper if desired (I personally love hot food and usually tell them in these ethnic places to make it the way they would make it for themselves.)
I recomend German food.
I'll have to guess on which side the corrupt politicians are because it's not explicit enough for an outsider. The channel is dedicated to the immigrant experience but there are always some small political statements like the corruption one. Is the immigrant experience connected to these political statements? Perhaps one side is better for (future) immigrants or something?
😂😂😂 weird. I love you guys, I want to hang out with you! Have you guys gotten American Chinese food? I can't remember. I actually don't even know if it's popular everywhere like it is where I live in St. Louis
Maam do u eat a lot of chicken/meat?
Haha yes
