- This week I thought that it would be good to get back to some simple basics: how to hold a colored pencil. And even though this concept is really geared towards colored pencil for beginners, everyone can use a refresher every now and then.
Did you know that there is a right way and even a wrong way to hold a colored pencil? That's right, watch to see how NOT to hold a colored pencil.
While there are several pencil holding techniques that you can use, here are my two favorites: the traditional and overhand grips. See how to hold and use these pencil grips to make coloring easier and less fatiguing on your hands-leading to more fun coloring time!

Rose is so adorable!!
You and rose are both beautiful souls. So grateful for all you (both 😉) do for us! From one 'chronic pain plagued-but still always trying- superhero' to another, you are amazing and appreciated so much. ❤️
Agreed I’m also a chronic pain sufferer and it’s just not a good time for me lately as I also struggle with depression & anxiety.
@@jenjetson4661 aww my dear, I totally understand and feel ya. Sending so much love your way
I love watching you, your channel is great. Now, if you want to get technical, the first method is called a ‘dynamic tripod’, if you cross your thumb over the pencil, it’s a ‘lateral tripod’, but the most accurate and healthy way to use a pencil long term is actually using a method called ‘dynamic quadropod’, and that’s when you make contact with the pads of your fingers directly on the pencil, this allows you to rotate the pencil as you draw and colour to maintain a sharp edge always😂✨and you’ll never bruise a knuckle again. Info to make the world go round.
❤
It may seem simple but it is sooooo true and important…the colors just blend with incredibly amazing results when using a lighter touch grip. Thank you for this great tip!
Love to see you and Little Rose!
Your dog is adorable.
Me and my Rheumatoid hands thank you! Looking forward to more helpful tips from you !
Thank you. I have never tried position 2 but maybe one day. Position 1 I'm still trying to master. Doing Hand practice ( Color My World) right now.
This was so helpful! Thank you!
Love your nails 😍
i love your puppy! she may not feel steady enough on the pillow to do her "stand up" trick but might be feeling more secure if she was on the floor.
i want a dog!
The way Rose was looking at you!!! 😅😅😅😅 So sweet! Totally interested in what you were saying. 😅😅😅😅 Almost like monitoring you, making sure you were doing good! A natural boss lady! 😅😅😅😅
Thank you so much for this video! You all 3 are so lovely, I instantly get in much better mood watching you. I´ve been using the deat grip when coloring but now I´m going to pay attention to how I hold my pencil and I think it will make huge diffrence...I needed this video thanks a million!
I love getting coloring tips and cute doggy happiness too!! 🧡🖤🧡
Thank you for this 😄🙏
I love your advice and I'll make sure I'm not making this mistake. Love your videos.💗💗
Good tips😊
Hello Rosie, Jennifer and Steve. Thank you for this important information. You are right about the death grip. I do that writing and you can see the writing on the next 2 sheets.
Lovely video and sweet pup! I know she is not a "puppy" but our Buffy is 13 years and she is still our Pup!
Lovin it 🥰
Comprehensive. Thanks Jennifer and Steve.
I really need to learn from these tips.. Ive been pressing too hard on the paper... all these years ive been doing that.. now time to slow down...😂😂😂
Rose seems fascinated with everything you say!
Those nails 🤩
Love the picture of Rose that you colored!
OOOO MY YOUR HAIR COLOR IS BEAUTIFUL!!!! I gotta try something bold next year when I turn 60. Maybe a royal purple?? And I do like coloring and I learned something new!!! Thank you for sharing.
OOOO AND THAT FINGERNAIL POLISH IS AWESOME TOO.....LIKE CAR PAINT.
Thank you for this! So helpful. Rose is SOOOOO cute! I have 2 small cute fur babies myself and they look at me like that all the time because I work from home!!! 🤣😂 My husband isn't here and I'm not talking to them so has mommy lost her brains? Looolll.. so blessed she's better. 🥰
I love the Rosie bubbles Steve! Will you do those more?
Hi from Washington!!!!!

I saw a cool color pencil technique at Kristi Partridge Art. She used pencil shavings for the base layer. She sanded the pencil core with sandpaper that is used to sharpen pencils. You might like this. ❤
Random Question but any tips on how to keep your coloring books open so you can color (im a lefty) and tend to like to color and draw in bed because of my broken back and exhaustion etc. But I can't seem to come up with some crafty way to keep these darn books I have open! Hahah
First time watching a video.
I am watching your video with interest but I cannot stop looking at your nails. Please can you tell me the make and colour. Maybe i'll be able to get here in the Uk not sure. Rose is so cute and i keep looking at her too. I should really start to concentrate on what you trying to say. 😘
I think I always had “the grip of death”. That is why a I have a bump on my middle finger! I probably even held my crayons that way! I raced to see your video but it’s a case of “banned in Dallas” you are such a trease. ;)
Hi from texas
I have had the death grip problem and am trying to train myself out of it.
Hì from Florida💖
Yes i noticed that theres a difference from sketching to coloring how i hold mechanical pencil to color pencils plus i always to drawing warm ups before sketching but whdn i color i just try to color without doing anything to warm up my wrist or fingers or hand...but rec, recently i return home from hospital dand dr at hospital told me to clor to help get my dexterity and strength back in wrist fingets and boy do i notice how weak my hood arm wrist and fingers are....mikelle art mom👩🎨🎨
I failed right off the bat because i've never been able to hold a pencil normally. I have always tucked my thumb behind my first pointer finger.
I can only use pencils with a death grip because I have low muscle tone, arthritis and cerebral palsy. Otherwise I can’t control where the pencil hits the paper
Just curious I have noticed that the videos over the last roughly a month have been short not like your previous lives…did I miss a memo 📝?? Just hoping everything is ok with you & the family. Hugs 🤗
I don't know. You recently colored a pumpkin that looked like a potato...
Hello sweet Rose...I love you beautiful girl💗💗💗
I am cringing because the only way I have ever coloured in is the death grip !! 😢
